I think you mean not enough water under the bridge.
Also, I assume it has not been anounced yet and the Burke talk is all speculation.

I kinda liked the direction the team was going anyway, regardless of the hiring.
But if this gives the franchise a little more stability in the front office and ends some of the meddling rumors, then I'm all for it.

Probably mean back as a UFA. Anything over 5 would be an overpayment, but it wouldn't be the worst move to bring him back honestly.

These Toronto rumors are already old, stupid and annoying and it's only been like 2 hours.
So goes the 24/7 sports coverage where even the most banal and inane topics are ridden out.

There is never anything wrong with hating all things Edmonton but I would prefer this organization to not be so focused on what happens 'up North'. Unless the Oilers suddenly become good again, we are choosing the wrong franchise to compare ourselves to.

Were they actually speculating that?
All I heard was Boomer pose the question to Loubo and Rhett - with the response being "..... I hadn't even thought of that"
Did I miss more afterwards?

4-5 years ago this is a guy who was a consensus top 3 GM in the league. I don't know that he would have considered Calgary as a destination if it wasn't for his messy divorce with the Leafs, so for me I feel very lucky the Flames find themselves in this situation.
Generally I agree that using recycled GM's is a copout strategy, but IMO Burkie is one of the best in the business and got a really raw deal in Toronto.
I hope this turns into a GM position in Calgary.

Stajan is a more experienced player now...
Our D is looking pretty sketchy. Not a Phaneuf fan but that would not be the worst pick up. Then again, would rather see Wotherspoon and/or Breen shock the world and step up in a big way.

At the very least the Flames won't be an afterthought in the NHL, even if the team is bad for a few seasons. Burke commands a lot of attention.

For effs sakes just shut up about acquiring Leafs cast offs for the only reason that a new manager came from there. Utterly moronic.

Meh. I could see him not wanting to come to Calgary because next year we'll still be hip deep in a rebuild... but given that the only familier faces in the locker room would be Glencross and Giordano I don't think it likely that there would be any personality conflicts preventing it. The team that Phaneaf was traded from doesn't exist anymore.

On the Phaneuf rumors, I've gone on record saying that Dion is the most over-rated player in the NHL. I'm not a huge fan of his, but even I can admit that a top 4 of Giordano, Wideman, Phaneuf and Brodie doesn't look half bad.
I think, however, this Phaneuf speculation is way too premature.

Thankfully Bozak just signed a new contract; zero interest in Stajan 2.0.

As an NHL GM (with Hartford), Burke’s first trade with Calgary was in June/93. He acquired Sergei Makarov, 35, for a 4th round draft pick.

I don't see phaneuf coming back to Calgary... I like him as a player and he did have his best years here but he is always a whipping boy wherever he goes and it will be the same thing again if he comes back. Fans and media are really hard on this guy for some reason. Never wanted him traded in the first place but what's done is done and phaneuf and the flames aren't really a fit anymore. The flames could play their cards right and have another 3 picks in the first round again this year and build their defence through the draft.
