During the Shanahan distraction I said we should have hired Burke so I'm happy with this. What this signals is that ownership is comfortable bringing a strong headed executive in to oversee hockey ops. That's a sea change in the management style over the last 5 years.
Burke had a so so record in Toronto but he did fiercely guard his autonomy on hockey decisions to the point that it got him fired. We need that type of personality in the org what with the meddling know nothing duo of King and Edwards as the defacto managers of hockey ops currently.

How much disappointment will there be if the conference was just to announce Kiprusoff's retirement? And disappointment not because of Kipper, but because it wasn't about Burke?

I think Burke and Lowe have buried the hatchet. Brian's son Brendan really wanted his dad to patch things up, and after he passed away they did.
That being said, I definitely wouldn't mind seeing some bantering between the two!

No chance they do that. The media would only ask questions about Burke, leaving Kipper standing in front of a microphone with nothing to say. Granted Kipper would probably like that.

The Flames will announce that Brian Burke has stepped up, and will become a Big Brother to Kevin Lowe.

The fact that people are looking forward to watching two team presidents make themselves the centre of attention says absolutely nothing good about either organization.

I think it could be a good thing. If Burke is hell bent on his team being better than Lowe's team and vice versa, we could have a very good Battle of Alberta again.

I think the notion of Burke trading away prospects is overblown. If I recall correctly, when he inherited the TO job, he knew it was a 5 year process. While there were certainly missteps, he clearly had a much better team and prospects when he left. I agree that the drafting doesn't seem to be his strong suit, but he seems to have a better feel for the pro scouting and trades, which is where I feel the flames are way behind the curve.
If he is head of hockey ops, I am most interested in how he deals with Monahan.

If Burke doesn't mention Edmonton once in his press interview, it will be a historic day for this organization.

I sure doubt that. Who would the Flames trade in order to acquire him besides prospects? It makes no sense to do that.

I can't see any way Dion would want to come back to Calgary. There's too much water under the bridge.

Well... Matt Stajan comes to mind.
In all seriousness though, I think it's speculation of Burke going after Phaneuf if he doesn't want to re-sign in Toronto next offseason.
