Short article in the Herald about Keegan Kanzig
Quote:
A whisker under six foot six in bare feet (size 14), he weighs 240 pounds. Meaning his dimensions are the natural starting point for any conversation.“When people see me, they see my size,” said Keegan Kanzig, 18. “But I do think I’m a smart player. But people don’t think or talk about it much because they’re too busy talking about how big I am. So people don’t notice (the hockey IQ).”

Like anyone else I am intrigued by the size. But my major concern is that we all know how much of a bias NHL scouts have towards bigger players, they will inevitably overrate these types of giants. Yet despite that, Kanvig wasn't even ranked in the top 200 of many major lists. So it leads me to believe he is a really really bad hockey player. This type of player should not be picked in the 3rd round when there is still talent available, these picks should be made in the last 3 rounds when teams are going for the Hail Mary pass.
That being said, he is a Flame now and I wish him all the best and hope he can wear the flaming C one day.

90th ranked player in the draft by the 'consensus' below:.

Not sure what lists you consider 'major', but seems to be averaged at 90th by the above lists. CSS had him at 112.

is central scouting not a "major list"?
from the article linked just above you

Rated by Central Scouting as the 112th-best North American skater — after being slotted 194th at the mid-season grading — the Athabasca native had expected to be plucked in the fifth round, maybe even as early as the fourth.
|
The guy was already in their top 200 and then jumped an additional 82 spots. It's not surprising to think a team would have a quick riser rated even higher if they noticed the potential sooner.

I think Feaster would have waited til the 4th round had he thought he could get another pick...but with not another pick til the 5th, he had to take a guy he wanted.. I can't wait to see how this guy pans out... Might be fun to watch in Abby if nothing else.

“I’m a defensive defenceman,” he said. “I’m a big guy, so I use my size to my advantage. I play physical. A team player. Smart defensively. I’m there to protect teammates and stand up for them. If it needs to be done, I’ll do it. But I don’t think fighting is going to be my only role. I’m not going to be out there just to drop the mitts. I think I’ll be used as a shut-down player.”
As a role model, Kanzig likes Matt Greene, a 232-pound piece of sandpaper who’s made a good living in the NHL. He’s currently employed by the Los Angeles Kings.
“Similar style,” said Kanzig. “A strong, defensive, shut-down player.”

from what I have seen and heard from development camp, skating is not nearly the issue some made it out to be.
