I'm willing to shrug my shoulders at this pick, given that they went pretty skill heavy with the 3 first rounders. If 2 or 3 of those guys pan out, this "swing for the fences" pick is easy to forget about.

That said, on the surface, it seems foolish to spend a 3rd on what seems to be a one-dimensional thug when you can trade for one in exchange for a 6th or 7th rounder pretty much anytime. Hopefully he becomes much more than that.

This was a bad pick because the asset wasn't fully leveraged. If you want to pick a sleeper, great, all the power to you.. But do it smart. Feaster could have traded down to make this selection and picked up a 5th rounder or better.
Usually when teams trade up at the draft it is because they want a specific player and have a feeling they will be going soon and want to get their foot in the door while it's open. If there was no teams with that feeling right then, then no one would be willing to give up an additional pick just to move up when the difference between later round picks is negligible.

With the lack of trading up/down in the latter rounds I don't believe that was actually a possibility.

I don't mind us getting bigger and tougher. I miss the days when other teams dreaded coming into our 'dome to play the Flames. Where most of our guys could throw them down and were also good players who stood up for their team mates. I have no problem with this pick as if he works with the proper training and people, he could only get better right ? 6'5-6'7 defencemen with a nasty edge are not falling from the trees in the NHL and are not easily aquired or easy to come by as some on here suggest. I hate the Leafs, but, they did turn their organization around this year by the team showing team toughness. Although people say that the trend is going skilled, maybe even smaller- this is clearly not the case as shown by the Cup winners over the last few years. I anticipate things getting back to the good 'ol days with a nice combination of skill but team toughness.

Anytime a 6'7 240lb D man gets picked I am immediately thinking the next Chara Kanzig doesn't appear to be but i'm not disappointed with the pick.

As long as he can skate and clear the front of the net he has a chance.
Just his reach gives him an advantage if the skating and hockey IQ is there
Kid enjoys to scrap that is for sure.

There were moves made in that same round, were there not? ... Or we're they all made in the 2nd round?

After the end of the 2nd round I found 4 examples of trades that involved only picks.

3 involved next years picks and only 1 was a trade down. That trade was the Chicago getting the 111th pick for the 117th and 151st

I'm trying to think of a play on words like King Kong cause he's so damn big.

Keegan Kanzig...... It's in there somewhere.

I keep thinking Killer Kanzig. We keep him in a special cage at the end of the bench. We let him loose in Edmonton and Vancouver games all hopped up on PED's, tell him someone said something about his momma and let him loose. don't look him in the eyes ! lol. And when he fights, we play "Mother" by Danzig.

Is there a psychological payoff for a player who's been drafted off the board?

Yes- Holy Crap !!! I made it !!, Someone wants me, knows what I'm about, cares to invest in me, I better do my best to prove them right. Doesn't always pan out though.. much like a real life relationship.

King Kongzig?

King is his new nickname. Or Ziggy, but that's not very intimidating.

'Keegan Kanzig' is an anagram of 'A Ken King Gaze'
