Well obviously, but my point was in general.
Most (but not all) professional gangs largely operate on illegal funding. Cut off a major source of their income (while having those revenues now come into the government, which trickles down to us), and that's only a good thing.
I don't think there would be significant increases in marijuana usage if it was legalized, either. Just because something is now legal doesn't mean you're going to start smoking it.

I don't know man, standing in the checkout at Sobey's, looking over at a Point-Of-Sale display for "NEW! Cracklinz! Now with less twitching!", you'd say "Hey, it's only $5!" and throw a few boxes in your cart.
Before you know it, you're in a gutter somewhere talking to your shoe, covered in Funion crumbs and grasping at the pant legs of passers by.

It's just not that simple. Like someone already said take Cocaine for example. Canada legalizes it - where is the supply coming from? It cannot be grown locally in most places - it comes from South America where it's produced by the cartels - we going to buy our cocaine from them? It will then need to be transported either in or over the US - I would like to hear your comments on some of these issues - that don't seem well thought out by a lot of people of this opinion.
I am fine with it we think it will work.

Pretty sure if cocaine production is legalized, the government or private companies will find a way to produce it and legally ship it back to Canada (if it isn't grown here internally). I wouldn't even be concerned with that detail, really.

Heh. Legalizing drugs is like companies finally allowing Facebook during work. At first you get a lot of resistance and whole ton of pissing and moaning, then when it finally happens you realize it's not that bad and people aren't all going to succumb to the "big bad threat". And they don't. A balance will be found.

Criminal gangs won't just throw up their arms and give up if you legalize drugs, they'll just refocus on other ways to make money. Or they'll pound down the prices via the supply end and transport end. Or they'll find something more potent, or they'll sell guns and other stuff. As much as people think that legalizing drugs will make these criminal organizations go away, I think its a little naive.
I am completely content with the legalization of grass. Not so much of the super destructive drugs like Crystal Meth, and crack and cheap drugs that are popular with the more money handicapped social level. In fact if you suddenly have the government go into that business and make it hyper cheap I don't think your going to help the really desparate and sick, you're going to as a government enable them.
Personally I think with the more hideous drugs like Crystal Meth and crack and other ones, where the dealers are pretty much predators feeding on the desperate, the sick and the stupid. A bullet in the head or a swim in a piranha tank would be prefereable, hard drug dealers are miserable examples of humanity that are willing to poison people for profit. They have no use in society.
And I know I'm going over the top with the bullet in the back of the head etc. I would be all for giving them a one chance short prison term where rehabilitation and skill training is the goal, but the second time, there's lots of real estate in the far arctic and we wouldn't need that many guards or prison staff.

The Hells Angels, code of ethics which included not dealing in drugs like heroin died a long time ago, and they mostly due it through proxy with other member gangs anyways. They're just as bad and destructive as the other asian gangs out there.

Yeah, that's just what the world of organized crime needs, more violent criminals with a larger organization...
Gotta say, the HA public relations campaign has been successful.

Not for a while.
There were some excellent books on the biker wars, including one on Mom Bouchard (sp?)
Hell's Angels used to have this romantic image as societies rejects, and semi noble rogues, but I think people realize that they are pretty toxic now.

Either way, crystal meth is a drug that can be produced in a basement. The only way to stop the black market would be to make it available at such as low price, that it would be essentially free.

Make highly addictive drugs basically free? You don't see a problem with this?

Canada has the highest opioid consumption per capita in the world.
The vast, vast, vast majority of that is coming from the federal government, publicly subsidized.

I was thinking more along the lines of crack, heroin, and crystal meth, but that is still an interesting bit of information none-the-less.

I think the only reason anyone says they would rather have the HA running things now is just a racist reaction to hearing about newer Asian gangs. New gangs, same crime, same violence.
