I really hope that about 5 years from now Porier blazes past Shinkurak and snipes one top shelf on Lou winning us the Western Conference Finals.

He had an interview with the Flames
https://twitter.com/CruickshankCH/st...98290994708481
Buffalo interviewed him multiple times according to that tweet and still passed on him at #8 and #16
Phoenix passed on him at #12 even though interviewing him multiple times...
No mention about Columbus interviewing him but they passed on him at #14 and # 19
It is more than likely he left a bad impression with the Flames in his one interview

Or, and this is much more likely, they just liked Poirier better as a player.
IIRC from his Interviews with the Fan960 Shinkaruk did interview with the Flames, so it's not like they were not looking at him.
It wasn't just the Flames that passed on a free falling Shinkaruk.

Is it not possible the Shinkaruk flat out told the Flames he doesn't want to play for them? The Flames weren't the only team that passed on him... he made it to 24, after all.
Regardless, I really like Poirier. He has an unbelievable first few strides.

If you were Tod Button or Trevor Timmons and Mckenzie came to you asking who your sleeper or favourite was, would you straight out tell hi or maybe give some false info?
|
I would. McKenzie has been in this business a long time, longer than many scouts and has proven to be trustworthy. He's proven time and time again that he knows the players that teams like. Where do you think he got that from? Very little gets "leaked" from McKenzie. I'm not saying they reveal every secret like the sleepers they are hoping to fall to them in the 3rd round, but information such as guys they are really high on and who interviewed well gets shared.

I will have to admit ignorance on this pick as well as I was very high on the Q rookie of the year and 6'2 215 lb right winger, 40 goal scorer, who still has a couple of years to even get better than that....Zykov. I was so excited when Zykov was still on the board as I felt he would probably get picked up before #22 and when I heard some guy's name I never even heard being mentioned in the top 30 picked by us, I was in shock and disbelief the first few minutes and couldn't say anything except "what ?". The next few minutes were spent trying to refrain myself from putting my fist through the TV. The next few minutes were spent trying not to get physically ill- lol. I think I'm done my 8 stages or whatever it is.
Now, I have had a day to digest this, did a bit of reasearch and I feel a bit better about things. Now, don't get me wrong, I would of prefered Zykov, but, obviously these guys know more than me and I do love the wheels on this guy and the talk about his character and compete level in every aspect of the game and he is the clear cut leader by example on his team. So while I will put my Feaster voodoo doll away for now, I think I will watch the progress of both players to see if I was out to lunch or not, for my own personal interest. All the best to Poirier and I wish him much success on our team. Congrats Emile.

Poirier I knew very little about but from what is being said he has a high skill set and an extremely good skater.
Hoping they passed on Shinkaruk and took an even better player.
I have not heard anything bad about Poirier so maybe the Flames got this one right but most critics were stunned the Flames passed on Hunter including him.
|
Are they stunned that Detroit passed on him too? How about Toronto? If they are stunned that Calgary passed, they should be stunned that Washington passed too seeing as they picked after. If it's because he's from Calgary, well that's just stupid. Those critics should be ignored as I don't think any scout uses "from our home town" as criteria.

by definition, with any guy that falls in the draft, each successive team that passes magnifies the fall. If Calgary was selecting closer to his projected position, critics would have been less stunned.
Not going to put any stock into the bad attitude discussions here - the flames liked someone better. That's it. Seth Jones fell too; doesn't mean he was a bad kid or had a bad attitude.

Difference being I haven't seen or heard anything about Jones having attitude issues.
Seems to come up everywhere with Shinkaruk. Not just here.

Any links? I googled 'hunter shinkaruk attitude' and the first couple of pages of hits were all the standard PR bumf about how competitive he is.

You have to take it all with a massive grain of salt. There are whispers but that's it, nothing I'd take stock in yet to be honest.
The thing that stood out to me is the fact his numbers actually dropped as an 18 year old in his draft year.
17 year old - 49 goals 66 games
18 year old - 37 goals 64 games
To me this is far more important then any unsubstantiated attitude rumors floating around.

This is true. He partly made up for the reduced goal-scoring with assists, but assists are cheap.
Not as big a drop as Angelo Esposito in his draft year, but definitely heading in the wrong direction. Even standing still would be a bit of a yellow flag.

I haven't really seen him play but seeing the comparisons being thrown out there, his skillset seem similar to a player currently on our team...glencross. Am I wrong?

I don't like Hunter, but to be fair his linemates last season were substantially better. He was playing with Emerson Etem and Linden Vey.

Yup that's my point, the tsn guys watch about as much junior hockey as the average fan, ie, the world juniors and the odd game on sports net, or a game or two that rolls through Vancouver, Calgary, or Edmonton. They don't have the time to watch these kids like real scouts do for a living, therefore, their opinion isn't much better than you or I. They are paid to be knowledgable in the NHL and that's a big enough area to cover. They are not experts on junior hockey. Just like how Michel Goulet doesn't have Tod Button's knowledge of junior players.
Anyways, time will tell whether the Flames screwed up by passing on Shinkaruk but based on stats, highlights, and discussion by people who have actually watched Poirier (apparently he went head to head with Mackinnion and Drouin in the playoffs and more than held his own), I'm pretty excited about the pick.

True, which is why a guy like Monahan didn't drop much really (3rd to 6th if you count from the start of the season). Monahan played with some decent linemates as well in Ottawa (Toffoli being one), but had absolutely nobody else on the forward ranks to play with in this past season. Hunter was 4th in scoring on his team this season (3rd maybe?) - so he still had better players than Monahan. Monahan didn't drop (think his PPG slightly increased as he played less games).
I think Shinkurak has talent, but a lot of holes in his game as well (not known for being defensive), questions about how his game will translate (smaller, perimeter player) and seemingly questions about his attitude or character. He does possess tremendous finishing ability (elite I think), and I do think he is a very good competitor. Put the flaws in his game with the good (even discounting his supposed character issues) and there are enough question marks to him to see him slide I think.
Maybe last year he was seen as a kid who could drive offence and finish. This year, maybe the thought was he will only be a good scorer, but very one-dimensional? Just throwing out some ideas..
