I'm not going to pretend I know much about how he compares to other players available at that number, but I really can't see much reason to complain.
With that speed, size and reported willingness to battle all over the size combined with what seem at-worst decent hands and apparently even some playmaking ability (based on some scouts calling him "more of a playmaker"), he seems like essentially a sure thing to make it to the NHL, as a bottom-line utility player if nothing else, and those guys can be very valuable.
At the same time, it sounds like the ceiling on this kid is all the way up to a solid first liner. Very easy to see why some of those reports called him a potential sleeper.
Having a guy like this available at all around 22 IMO tells how good this draft was.

Looks awesome in the Youtube video... actually, kind of reminds me of the Drouin compilation. Not that I think he's on par with the 3rd overall pick--I haven't seen either player play live--but the moves are reminiscent. Quite pleased with this now.
The info on Shinaruk not really wanting to join the Flames is 100% true and the org knew it. He didn't want to immediately be behind Sven and Gaudreau as they are similar players. He will still be a 30 goal scorer in the league I think
Poirer looked absolutely stoked to be drafted by the Flames. Same with Monahan

Thanks for the info. Was curious why he was passed by us.
EDIT: I don't think TSN interviewed him. Does he speak English? Haven't read any articles, etc.

How can you tell if Shink will score in the show? Dude could end up being another undersized guy who can't put up in the bigs. He really needs to put on 20 pounds. He won't be playing next year, I'm sure. Maybe down the road he's part of a scoring line with Schroeder - that's a very skilled pairing.
Poirier SHOULD be stoked to go to Calgary, he has a shot at the NHL sooner than with a non-rebuilding team, and he got to be a first round pick which by all accounts he shouldn't have been. I think it's been beaten to death by now, it's a fine pick but it very probably could've been made at #28.

Poirier? He speaks English just fine, with a French accent though - not as much as Hartley, but similar to Ryan Culkin There's an interview of him with Kerr on the Flames homepage and he was on the 960 talking with Steinberg as well.
A reporter asked something along the lines of what Feaster's thinking was when they could have picked Shinkaruk, a local guy, but didn't.
Feaster replied with "Yeah...uhm.uh..that's not how we build a team. For us it is about getting the players in the right order and that we draft the players we believe are the best players and the best fit. If it happens to work out that way, that it is a local guy like it did with Morgan, then that's a bonus. But it's not how we put the list together"
Excellent reply.

Anyone else a little worried that Poirier could be traded to Montreal before he gets a chance to even play here? Montreal was high on Poirier, he's a french Canadian kid playing in Western Canada. It slightly worries me that he may wish to be in Montreal as oppose to Western Canada. I'm hoping this doesn't turn into a Tim Erixon scenario. After watching those highlights, I've grown to really like this selection.

He looked really excited about the opportunity (and about going so high in the draft). I wouldn't be too worried about it.

I think the whole purpose of Calgary taking him at 22 was because they knew Montreal was interested , so no I don't .
He will get a chance to play here and as bigger role sooner than he would in Montreal.
Plus for every Quebecer cherishing playing for the Habs, I bet there is just as many dreading it, the pressure there especially on a local kid is more intense than anywhere in the league.

Considering the reports of Montreal wanting him seem fairly vague and secondhand without them actually saying they wanted him it seems very premature to think that anything close to this would happen.

I have no worries that Poirier will not want to play for the flames. The flames can offer any youngster the chance to play sooner than later. This is not 4 years ago when they still wanted veterans over youngsters at every turn. Not only is he going to get the chance to play in the next couple of years he is going to get the chance to play in the top 6 a lot sooner than 90% of the teams in the league.
If you want to be worried, be worried that no veterans will want to stay or come to play in Calgary.
He looks like an exciting player. At 22, I think going off the board slightly is fine.
I also read on another board that Ottawa had him high on their list. Obviously not high enough to take at 17, but I don't think the Flames and Canadiens were the only teams that had him in their crosshairs.

People get too worked up over public scouting service and Mckenzie's rankings.
I doubt any "scouts" from the public services are paid as well as the actual team scouts who must have greater resources to work with. If they were any good, wouldn't teams be paying big money to get them on their staff?
As for Mckenzie, readily admits that he doesn't see these kids and he relies on team scouts for info. Think about that, if you were a team scout, would you be giving Mckenzie the true goods and reports on the guys you like? If you were Tod Button or Trevor Timmons and Mckenzie came to you asking who your sleeper or favourite was, would you straight out tell hi or maybe give some false info?
As for McGuire and Ferraro, neither guy gets out to see any junior games because their television schedules are too busy. They know no more about these prospects than fans do.
At the end of the day, if the rumour s true that Poirier was on Anaheim and Montreal's radar, that's good enough for me cause both those teams have been drafting very well in recent years.

I'm a skating novice so perhaps someone can explain to me why there were comments about his skating being awkward / non-optimal? It looks fine to me and he definitely has speed to spare. Does the low quality of the youtube video make it hard to notice?
Heck, I always thought Lombardi was an awkward skater but the guy could blaze down the ice no problem.

i've heard that scouts have noticed he skates "bowlegged and hunched over", or something like that. i think its normal for them to scrutinize the mechanics of a players stride, but i'm with you-he seems to be able to blow by defenders quite easily.
