i often see fans on here posting along the lines "i miss 04' when we were mean and tough to play against". we just got meaner, and tougher to play against. i like it
i liked sarich but he just is getting too old sadly.

He isn't anything special but he isn't just a facewash guy who is good for maybe 40 games either, he can play defense and has done so on some pretty deep teams.
|
He had one of the lowest TOI for those deep teams and was a 5/6 guy in terms of ice time on both those teams.
He has looked awful his last 3-4 years and pretty bad before that as well.
He can fill in on your bottom pairing if need be but will get beat a lot, give up a ton of goals, act like a tough guy after guys walk around him and fight. That can be useful on a bad, soft team but not close to a guy that should be getting top 4 minutes.

Not sure I understand the thinking that has people writing him off as a 3rd or 4th liner. Looks like they're expecting him to be a top two liner.
|
For the record, he will be 29 before the season begins, so for all intents and purposes, we acquired a 29 year old player since he will play no games for us while he is 28.
And yes, if a typical player peaks at 25-27, then the typical player would be on the downswing of their prime at 29. How many average players post career highs after the age of 29 and 30?

I didn't say he was getting top 4 minutes, he's a direct replacement for Sarich and as such will be fighting for the same time that Sarich fought for here. But he is 5 years younger, 5 times tougher and helps sustain defensive depth in case of injury. It's not a bad part of the trade at all.

If I were an Avs fan I would super pissed. They got older and slower and only saved $500 000 in cap. No way any team would take tanguay and sarich for an early round pick even if the flames retained salary.
The Flames get the type of player they were lacking and get a little closer to the cap floor. Cap hit for jones might be a little high but I rather pay more for a 28 year old player for three years than to a 33 year old player. It's not like the flames need that money for the next few seasons anyway.
People are saying that Jones was the Avs buyout candidate but if the flames were to buyout someone I'm sure that would be tanguay. I'm glad the last of the county club members are finally gone.

No more Tanguay on the point on the PP = win
On LW (and on the PP) I would rather Baertschi gets the minutes. LW is no worse off.
On RW, big improvement
On D, a wash.

O'Brien is not better, he is just as bad as Sarich. Quite honestly those 2 players should be sitting in the pressbox collecting a cheque of no more than $900,000.

Career highs in points generally have a high water mark between 31 and 34, but goal scoring peaks at 27.

It's OK - Jones will score 30 next year because even on terrible teams someone has to get the PP time and score. I am sure a few of our players will benefit from the Maple Leaf effect. Then we can trade him for a 1st.

He struggles to stay in the line-up consistently. In the AHL he would be borderline top 4 minutes.

You sir, are a Tanguay.

Did Jones have his 20+ goal seasons playing with Stastny or Duchene? The Flames don't have a centre anywhere near their calibre.

He didn't seem to struggle to stay in the line-up the last few seasons. 80 games in 2010-11 and 76 games in 2011-12.
There was a stretch last year he was out of the line-up but usually played over 10 minutes when he did play. Hardly a struggler.
The Flames desperately needs a physical presence on the blue line. He will be playing at least 65+ games this season barring injury.

So you've been here less than a year and you're an expert on CP? Or are you one of those guys that's been banned 5 times?

I don't mind the trade. End of the day we got rid of old assets and brought in a couple younger, hunger players.
I just hope Jones can rebound and isn't Comeau V2.

Peak point per game output is actually normally in a player's mid 20s, though the drop off from then to their late 20s and early 30s isn't too dramatic.

They also save an additonal $2million next year as SOB is signed till the end of 2014-2015 and Sarich is UFA at the end of this season.

Maybe 45 hits in 33 games on the Av's isn't overly physical but it would put him in 2nd place in hits per game behind Jackman for the current Flames.
Sarich had only 45 hits in his 28 games last year.
93 hits in 77 games in 2010-11 and 85 hits in 72 games in 72 games.
