It's more than one incident with O'Brien but considering that he is awful on the ice I would be much more focused and concerned about that rather then him possibly being a distraction off the ice.

I think if Jones can get 15 goals over a full season, that would be amazing. Still not worth $4 milliion.
Could you imagine if we still had David Moss and paid him that much? Because that is what we are getting.
|
I would disagree, Jones is a better player then Moss and more physical.

Disagree big time. Team needs to get bigger and grittier. Tanguay was softer than cervenka, adding jones over tanguay is a significant boost to toughness and compete, two woeful categories for Calgary. Jones has a ####ty deal, but getting out from under tanguay's awful and unnecessary Ntc is worth taking on the extra salary, likewise with sarich.
Last season sarich was a #7 defender for Calgary. Obrien is a #6. Roster player for a non-roster player, that's a good deal in abstract, throw in sarich at 2.5 mil and NMC, and once again it is worth it just to get out from under the restrictive trade clauses.
Give jones top line rw minutes and he should be a 20 goal man again.

All O'Brien really has to do is clear the crease and facewash and punish anyone that goes in to bug the goalie. Something the Flames despreately lack and have lacked for a long time.

He is top 6 on a bottom team like the Flames and 3/4th liner on a play-off team so I can somewhat see the two comments if people are talking about his ability overall but I agree that on this team he will be a top 6 player.
In the same vein I would expect him to be a 15 goal scorer if playing on a good team where he isn't good enough to get top 6/PP minutes but with the force fed minutes he will get in Calgary next year I would expect around 20 goals for him.

Christ, MacTavish spent a year in jail but somehow managed to become a very effective player for years after a fresh start.
The way people want to permanently punish others, without even knowing any facts, is truly incredible.
|
O'Brien's issues go back far further than that thing in Colorado. He has a long history of off ice discipline issues (partying, gaining a bunch of weight during the Olympic break, showing up late for practices after being out late the previous night at the Roxy, getting in arguments with his coaches, etc.).
He seems to have cleaned things up a little, but there's a good reason why he's joining his 6th organization by age 29.

Jones really doesn't use his body that much, he's not that physical.

With Polak hating the trade, I feel comfortable knowing the Flames did the right move.

Tanguay will always be a great playmaker, but he's too soft, which leads to him look invisible when he's not fully engaged in the play, especially at his age.
Jones is one dwarf season removed from 20 and 27 goal seasons, and is just getting into prime years. Looks like a player that could've used a change of scenery (and a coach). That can do wonders for some players. I look forward to seeing him play alongside Corban Knight and Roman Horak on the 3rd line. And if he shows his stuff, maybe can get bumped to the 2nd line.

I get that the Flames are not the most skilled team and Tanguay was a skilled player, but the lack of size and toughness is a more pressing need and opens up a spot for Baertschi to play in the top 6.
Not a great trade, but not a bad one. It makes sense and will hopefully make the team tougher to play against.
I do have some concern about O'Brien's attitude. Hopefully the rumours are mistaken, since he is only a decent addition if he has a great attitude.
|
Absolute BS. The Flames are one of the most skilled lineups in the league by far. They only finished 13 points out a play off spot and were 2 inches shorter and 20-30 pounds lighter than most teams they played.
If they banned hitting the 2012-13 Flames are easily a playoff team.

Don't know why anyone would be down on this deal, seems like a good hockey trade for both teams.
The Flames already have Glencross, Baertschi, and Cammalleri (for the time being) on LW and very little RW depth either on the team or in the system. In fact they have hardly any right hand shots let alone right wingers which is important. Tanguay clearly did not want to be here after Iginla left and his contract likely limited his possible destinations. He would've been a bad presence on the team for the young guys which is not what we need. Jones certainly had an off-year last year but if he can regain his form he will be exactly what the team needs: a big physical scoring winger, with a righty shot that can kill penalties. Being that he's only 28 I don't think it's crazy to expect that he can rebound and score at least 20 goals this year.
I like Sarich's character but I think as far as on ice performance goes it's a bit of a wash between he and SOB.
The Avalanche get a guy in Tanguay they are very familiar with that has skill and experience. With so many young guys at C playing key roles with very little NHL experience (Landeskog, Duchene, maybe MacKinnon) he could be a good linemate/role model if he approaches it with the right attitude. Sarich gives them a experience and a physical element as well but they seem to already have a lot of d-men of his ilk. Don't know how or why Sarich got included except for maybe evening things out but I'm okay with it.
Good hockey trade all around.

After the abuse kipper took this year, I'm sure we have a few goaltenders less leery to be in the net.

I like the trade for 2 reasons:
1) Gets rid of that whiny cancer
2) Improves our chances to get top 2 picks the next 2 seasons
I don't like it because:
1) I was hoping we could dump Tanguay without taking a bad contract back
2) SOB does not exactly seem like a guy you want in your room
Overall, though, whatever - I was hoping we could get some sort of a pick out of dealing Tanguay, but oh well. And I guess we need somebody getting paid to reach the floor.

Team that gets the best player wins the trade.
Avs win this easily.
Feaster should have got a pick for taking a bad contract. Jones at $4 million until 2016 is bad unless he gets 25 goals each season. Not sure he can do that here.

If it results in one less run-the-goalie incident, it's a good trade

Bertuzzied has been trolling us with this 1st for Clutterbuck + for years. Can't people people still react to it. Methinks he reads too many comic books - out of touch with reality.
I'm okay with this trade, seems to be a lateral move in terms of talent with a benefit of getting younger.
