Pretty even trade.

Tanguay is an older guy with too much term on his deal and needs to be in the right place to succeed.

Sarich is pretty broken down but may suffice as a No. 6 for a year or two yet.

Jones is basically a less injury prone David Booth, coming off a worse season than Tanguay but is younger with more upside.

O'Brien is also a No. 6 guy with flaws.

Nothing to see here folks - both teams exchanged unwanted pieces and will probably benefit more from the guys they got, than if they had stood pat. The Tanguay trade was never going to be more than this - those hoping for a 2nd rounder or blue chip prospect were dreaming.

worst case is be found our ace in the hole to guarantee the top pick

Reading the "other" board, seems like Jones suffered a bunch injuries that severely impacted his speed. Didn't see that mentioned here.

Honestly, the only player in the deal who had negative value was Sarich.
Honest question - do you think David Jones would pass through waivers right now? I bet he would. That's negative value.

Tanguay had a poor end to the season and it really looked like he wasn't going to fit in with the team going forward. He is a good player and I hope he does well playing with some good forwards in Colorado.

I get that the Flames are not the most skilled team and Tanguay was a skilled player, but the lack of size and toughness is a more pressing need and opens up a spot for Baertschi to play in the top 6.

Not a great trade, but not a bad one. It makes sense and will hopefully make the team tougher to play against.

I do have some concern about O'Brien's attitude. Hopefully the rumours are mistaken, since he is only a decent addition if he has a great attitude.

Regardless, two guys of Sarich and Tanguay's ages had no business being around this rebuild, especially still so early in the process. Glad we unloaded 'em.
Jones isn't just entering his prime. He is on the downswing of prime. Most players have their most productive seasons before they are 29 (like ages 25-27).

I think if Jones can get 15 goals over a full season, that would be amazing. Still not worth $4 milliion.

Could you imagine if we still had David Moss and paid him that much? Because that is what we are getting.

Yes... because we were TOTALLY in a position of power in this deal by dangling Tanguay...

So Jones has one off year (in a lockout shortened season) and now has negative value? I'm not buying it. He'd definitely get claimed off waivers.

As far as the trade goes, I don't get it. Unless Tanguay was so unhappy here that he had to be moved. We just sent one of our only skilled forwards away for a big body with little talent.
Because Feaster has no clue, before we were big with no skill, so now were tiny. So, anyone big is the soup of the day, regardless if they scored 4 goals last year or not.

Tangs is a playmaker, makes others look better. He would be good to have, but I am happy to see this scorched earth rebuild.

On that contract with the cap going down? I think you're overestimating teams.

The point was that it was one incident (on a team and season that was a complete write-off).

One (alleged) incident does not make discipline problems. Have you ever done something stupid?

Christ, MacTavish spent a year in jail but somehow managed to become a very effective player for years after a fresh start.

The way people want to permanently punish others, without even knowing any facts, is truly incredible.

Don't mind this trade at all. Flames get younger, bigger, and tougher. And the dismantling of our aging, crappy core is all but complete. We all wanted the Flames to blow it up, and that's clearly what they're doing. Thank god.

I think trade had more to do with them trying to change the culture in the room. Jones is a bad contract but by the time the ship gets straighten out he will either be gone. At this point I really don't think it matters much that the flames are picking up salary.

Pretty much an exchange of contracts, lateral move IMO.

Change of scenery both ways hoping to find a better fit with what each team thinks it needs. I think getting different bodies in the locker room will help the team with resetting its expectations and philosophy.

please don't misconstrue my ell oh ell as meant for you. *I* know the team is way younger (hell as of the start of last season even). I am just commenting on the fact that these idiots will always say "The Flames are old and slow" or "The Flames can't score goals" ect ect.

LOL so 28 year olds are now on the downswing? Not sure you'll get anyone to agree to that.

Jones recently scored 20 and 27. Now if he gets 15 it's "amazing"? Say what? Moss has scored 20 goals only once in his career.

Not sure I understand the thinking that has people writing him off as a 3rd or 4th liner. Looks like they're expecting him to be a top two liner.

Jones must have really been hated in Colorado.

Tanguay will likely be third line there.

Their top 6 forwards last year were Duchense, Stasny, O'Rielly and Parenteau, and Landeskog. The #6 forward in TOI was McGinn/Jones.

Downie has had a year to get back from his ACL.. He was in their top 6 when he got hurt They pick Mackinnon and/or Drouin and Tanguay ends up as a 3 line killing penalties and and on the 2nd unit PP.

I like the trade a lot actually, the only things we will miss from Tanguay are the things he just isn't doing as well anymore and he was starting to become easily pushed around and less shifty with the puck. We were really, really weak at RW to start the season but with Jones I think we have our 2nd line RWer now who can get PP minutes and PK minutes as well. Perfect line pairing for me is Glencross - Backlund - Jones a line in which I can definitely see the potential shut-down ability, big bodies on the wings with a good two-way center who has some vision, and all players have demonstrated soft hands as well at points of their careers. Tons of potential for the line-up with just this one move already. I don't think we can fairly judge the trade until the bigger picture of this off-season for the Flames is seen more clearly but just looking at it as a pure hockey trade it's hard not to like it for the Flames:

- Get a 5 years younger forward who is 500k more /year for the same amount of term but without a NMC or NTC.

- Get a 5 years younger D-man who is the same amount of money but has 1 more year on the term who has put up comparable numbers to Sarich over the last 5 years and has played in more games than Sarich has in 4 of the last 5 seasons. We're basically getting a younger Sarich Lite.

- We get rid of two players who really didn't want to be here anymore and bring in two of those 'Apex' players that Feaster speaks of, these guys are currently in the prime of their careers respectively while Tanguay and Sarich are clearly on the decline

- Gets rid of one of the many LWers that were clogging this team up, that's why Tangs was tried out at center in the first place, and depending on how he adapts to the Flames system we get a desperate team need filled in a top 6 RW spot with Jones.

Can't wait to see more Feaster, keep em comin!
