True, but I don't think he was voluntarilly sitting out. He is our best hitting D-man no question. I think it's more a case of mis-management via Hartley.

I would be alright with throwing money at both of them (if Cammy and Tanguay are gone).
We still to to dress a roster and you need to have pieces that will help the young kids be successful, you don't want to throw the young guys to the wolves like the Oilers and Islanders have done.
I like those two as well since this team needs RWs regardless. We lack NHL and prospect depth in that area.

I think the Flames will be near the cap again. Probably adding another physical defender as well.

And you propose we offer all these kids $5 mill per year contracts so we can stay above the cap floor too? I, for one, do not want to watch a team full of 18 year old kids get smacked around night after night with no veteran leadership and losing confidence with each beating they take.
No Thanks

The reality is, we need to ice a competitive team each night and that will mean having veteran players. If we ship out Tangs and Cammi and Stempniak we are dangerously low on experience and we need to replace them with UFA's or other experienced players.
I get that it's fun to have young players come up and see if they can play with the big boys, but I think this season there are some fans who are going to have a harsh reality set in on just how a rebuild works.

Your math is wrong. We only really need to trade one of the forwards to make some room on the big team right away. For argument's sake go with Tanguay.
Cammalleri-Stajan-Stempniak
Glencross-Backlund-Hudler
Baertschi-Knight-Horak
Jackman-Reinhart-Bouma
X: Jones, Alui/other young guy
Giordano-Wideman
Brodie-Smith
Butler-Cundari/Sieloff/Wotherspoon/Breen
X: Sarich
That still leaves room for a number of the young players to fight for roster spots and then Cammalleri, Sarich and/or Stempniak can be trade bait at the deadline to make room for more players from the Heat. By that time, the young players that have been up for most of the season should hopefully have a grasp on what they are doing and not need as much attention as the new guys.
Piling on a team full of rookies will not help anything.

I'd rather ice a team of primarily rookies and lose, than lose with a 1st line of Cammy - Stajan - Stempniak.
Either way, this team is brutal. It'll just be more fun to watch the kids play, IMO.

Not sure the team full of rookies would enjoy that though.

They'll enjoy it, and they'll like it too. If they don't, I'll turn this car right around.

Assuming Kipper retires, the Flames have something like $24 million in cap space, with not many positions to fill.
I'm not sure how they are going to find $24 million worth of free agents to bring in, especially with the team wanting to play young players.
The Flames will not be within $10 million of the salary cap, whether they want to or not, IMO.

I don't think anyone is advocating excising every veteran player off the team for more kids. But you want to keep the guys who have the right kind of attitude and ditch the ones who don't. Guys like Joey Mac, McGrattan, Sarich, Gio - these are the kinds of veteran players that will have a positive influence on the team and want to be a part of the solution. Guys who pout and quit playing when things don't go their way or have a loser mentality need to go - and we all know who those guys are.

I don't know whether ownership would be open to it, but I've suggested that the Flames could compliance buyout other teams players and receive an asset in return.
Say, something like this as an example:
Lecavalier + 2nd rounder - to Calgary
7th rounder (or other garbage) - to TB
Calgary then buys out Lecavalier, essentially buying an extra pick for cash.

I think taking on that much salary is a massive overpayment for a second rounder.

Or, trade for him now, get him for the whole year. If Stempniak was being shopped at this year's trade deadline, he would have gotten a first rounder easily. He may have gotten the biggest return of any Flames' trade.
|
You're terribly overrating Stempniak's value. Feaster barely got a guaranteed first round pick for Iginla because there weren't that many teams willing to move a first round pick. Other guaranteed first round picks moved for a forward was for Pominville. Stempniak had a good season production wise, but he's considered a 2nd line/3rd line guy on a contender.

That is a very expensive 2nd round pick

We don't really need to keep anybody over the age of 26. The Flames should look at all offers that will make us a better team in 2-3 years.

If you get the right offer, you should look at moving them. Solid veterans can always be acquired later. Espcially guys like Sarich, Joey Mac, and McGratton. We shouldn't move them for the sake of moving, but if a good offer comes along, you go for it.

We need to get McGrattan signed. We can't have a young team getting pushed around. At least we can win some battles if not the war.
