From what people have been saying he will be pushing for an NHL spot this camp.

All things considered, the Flames have some really good options at center going forward. Here's what I could see our depth chart looking like in 3 years time:

Jankowski/#6 2013 pick
Jankowski/Knight/Reinhart
Knight/Reinhart/Arnold
Arnold/Granlund?

Based on prospect pool alone, this could be our forward lineup in 3 years:

Baertschi/#6 2013 pick/?-FA
Gaudreau/Jankowski/?-FA
Agostino/Knight/Reinhart
Hanowski/Arnold/Nemisz?

Not even taking into consideration guys like Backlund, Granlund, Bouma, Ferland, Howse, Byron. There is good depth except projected top line right wingers...which could be filled through free agency.

The defense needs work, but still has this with current contracts/prospects:

Brodie/Wotherspoon
Sieloff/Wideman
Any of Ramage, Cundari, Kulak, Culkin, Breen, Lamb.

Goalies:
Gillies
Ortio/Brossoit

Say what you want about the Flames drafting and development in the past, but they are finally getting their act together.

I imagine Cherry is thinking with Roy leading the charge in Colorado they will try and deal one or more of their current centers for a NHL ready defenceman and draft McKinnon. Personally with a center lineup of Stastny, O'Reilly, Duchene, Oliver, Mitchell and Malone I have no bloody clue why Colorado would draft another center; it seems so asinine when they need a blue chip Dman and Jones is that player.

You are forgetting that he Flames will have a shot at Sam Reinhart in the '14 draft.

Oh, of course. I wasn't saying that we should be keeping the picks, I'm all for moving up to get MacKinnon, or even Drouin. Like _Q_ said, this trade shouldn't change anything at the draft. What I was saying was, the Flames should STILL be taking a center, because while Knight is a good two-way center, he'll probably never be able to take on a #1 spot, whereas MacKinnon can. But if we can't get MacKinnon, then we should be drafting one of the other centers projected to go in the top 6.

And like _Q_ said, if Knight is a Monahan-type guy, maybe this makes them go Lindholm instead. There are so many moving parts to this draft, the possibilities are virtually endless.

Awwww too bad. From what I hear Knight is defensively responsible which means he's already better at playing defense than Justin Schultz.

I think Tom for 3, Hudler signing, Cervenka (even though a bust) were his best moves to date. Maybe the Jay Bouwmeester deal too as I think Cundari is exactly the type of player the Flames should be getting (and we got a 1st).

Probably when Roy became HC and VP hockey ops or whatever gives him the authority to make trades. He coached against MacKinnon, had a front row seat to see how good he was. If he was a winger, I'd agree Jones is the slam dunk. MacKinnon projects somewhere between Tavares and Sid. I don't care who you have at centre already, who's dad played basketball for the Nuggets 15 years ago, MacKinnon HAS to be a serious consideration for the Avs, if not the outright favorite.

The Jay Bouw deal is good, if only because at the start of the year people would have almost been willing to buy him out.

Instead we got a 1st and two prospects for him.

I think this actually makes it easier to package the three 1sts for McKinnon... this move really helps our prospect depth. I really would like to see us get a d-man in the 1st round, as there is a huge void there, but if you can get a franchise player (McKinnon) you do it.

If I'm a betting man, though, I bet we move up and draft Barkov.

I think you are dismissing how good Jones is.

Knight is showing great hockey IQ already.

Why waste the money and space though? He is not ever going to be an NHLer, throw him on the Chucko train with the other busts.

From all I have been reading, I can't understand why anyone would have negative feeling towards this. It may not turn out to be a great trade or even a good trade, but there is almost no way in which this can be negative (unless he doesn't sign, but sounds like he will...so yeah)

So we made the trade and got him signed. I guess the next big question is, what helmet will he be wearing?
