Building a contender through the draft is all about hitting a home run on picks after the first. I think this is one of those situations. If you just traded a 4th rounder for a potential 2nd line center (who is big and can take face offs), that is a home run.

I am hoping desperately that Monahan falls to the flames. Having a pair of centers that are really good faceoffs is a step in the right direction (watching Bergeron go 85% in the dot yesterday was a thing of beauty).
If we can get Monahan (6'2) with Knight (6'2), and I'm still a big fan of Backlund... that is a great start of building a foundation.

Last summer I looked at top prospects for every NHL team in my Top Shelf Series.

Here's Corban Knight's scouting report (Super Sleeper, Florida).

Knight completed his 4 years in college, he would be a UFA on Aug. 15th.

The deal was great to begin with. That tweet makes it perfect.

I was thinking more along the lines of this trade swaying people from keeping all 3 picks to the trade up for Mackinnon side.

Monahan would be better than Knight, but if the reports are right and Knight turns into a #2 center then wouldn't we rather have a #1 instead of another #2 in Monahan?

Any reason it's a two year deal as opposed to three?

Personally, at this point after adding a big, 3rd, maybe future 2nd line center that can play a 2-way game, I'd be ecstatic if we can pick up Monahan at #6, and use the other picks for other areas of need. But I'm afraid of Carolina taking him before us. If that's going to be the case then we need to keep pushing to move up.

Think this is a great signing by Feaster and Co. Anytime you can pick up a big, top 10 Hobey Baker finalist centerman who has was 60% in the face-off circle and can possibly crack the line-up now IMO is worth a 4th rounder anyday. And it's sweeter that the Oilers and Van didn't get him.

I really like this move. Sounds very much like Jarret Stoll to me.

Watching how effective the depth players on the Bruins and Hawks are (Shaw line, Paille line), I think this is a step in that direction should he pan out.

No Messing around the kid is worth the 4th rounder when we have so many 1st round picks this year.

I don't think this changes much in terms of the draft. I think the Flames still take a centre with their first pick, but I can see this maybe allowing them to pick Lindholm instead of Monahan. Seems like Knight is a similar player to Monahan, while Lindholm would give this team a whole different type of skill set.

As a 22 year old his ELC is only allowed to be 2 years long

Quote:
Players younger than 25 as of Sept. 15 in the calendar year their first NHL contract is signed are subject to the terms of Article 9 of the CBA and must sign an entry-level contract (ELC). This means the amount of salary and team-paid performance bonuses is capped, depending on his draft year or the year he signs. The length of the ELC is also specified based on the player's age.

AGE LENGTH
18-21 3 years
22-23 2 years
24 1 year
25+ No Restriction * .
* A one-year entry-level restriction applies to drafted players from Europe aged 25 to 27.

I like what I hear about him. It sounds like the kind of player that makes teams difficult to play against.

Does anyone know if he is NHL ready, or should we expect he'll be playing for the Heat?
