As embarrassing as an event in 2008 headlined by Ozzy and Judas Priest?

The odds of Canada being awarded the FIFA World Cup in the next three decades are remote.
2026 - Europe
2030 - Asia/Americas
2034 - Americas/Asia
2038 - Europe
2042 - Misc
The U.S. will almost certainly get the Americas slot. If not, Argentina, Mexico, and Chile would all have better shots than Canada.
I just don't see it happening. Even on a competitive basis alone, Canada has to prove it belongs in the World Cup. Qualifying for the thing might be a good start.

Clarke Field should be getting 3000 extra seats to meet attendance targets for the 2013 season.
Also, the man who built the Edmonton FC club, Joe Petrone, is working full-time in Calgary now to bring an NASL team to the city. Here is a link with an interview with him: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgar...fessional.html
EDIT: Petrone wants a team in Calgary for the 2014 or 2015 season, and would likely play at McMahon. I think an NASL team is a good measuring stick for how pro soccer would do in that facility, or whether a new one is required that's more suitable.
|
I'm trying to figure out how those issues, which are MAJOR issues, would somehow not exist in Calgary when they exist in a city with a much stronger soccer history than Calgary. They can't sell season tickets in Edmonton, where professional soccer has actually existed for quite some time, yet it won't be an issue in Calgary?

I suppose there's a lot of people here who will write in:
"Give it to the billionaire owners of the Flames, so they can build 1/20th of their new arena/stadium, to help them rake in money faster than they currently do."
Seriously, I cannot believe there are so many people who seriously think that the best possible use of hundreds of millions of dollars in public funds is to build a new arena for a private company, because the line ups for beer and nachos at the current one are too long.
Hmm.
New MRI scanners at every major hospital? Cardiac intervention suites? New STARS helicopters? More surgical staff to cut wait times? Reducing the environmental impact of the tar sands? Diversifying Calgary's economic base?
Not worth it, man, not when we could be paying Murray Edwards hundreds of millions so he can build a building that holds twice as many mini-donut stands.
|
Well the day the city spends their money usefully like that I will eat my flames jersey. But the fact that they piss away money all over the place wouldn't make pissing away money on this any better.
It would be fascinating to see the actual economics.

Sorry, would someone be kind enough to summarize the latest here? Quick scan has talks of World Cup, Olympics etc but don't have time to read it all.
Thank You!

Screw qualifying, just start giving bags and bags of cash to the right people at FIFA like Qatar did. If the world's worst place to play soccer in July can do it, so can we!

Yep, they could quite easily play in 3 100,000+ stadiums (Michigan Stadium, Ohio Stadium, Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium would be the most likely of the existing stadiums) and would have their choice of multiple 80,000+ stadiums (Rose Bowl, LA Coliseum, or it's replacement, MetLife, FedEx, Arrowhead and Cowboys Stadium, among others).
For Canada to host a World Cup there would need to be a massive stadium building spree, and there would be virtually no purpose for pretty much every single one of those stadiums after the World Cup. It would be one of the most absurd spending sprees imaginable, and that's without even considering other associated infrastructure upgrades.

I have it on good word that the Flames organization will announce something either today or next week.
A mod is welcome to PM me for my source. I would rather not reveal it here.
They are eyeing 4 possible locations: 2 within the city, 1 on Stampede Park and 1 outside the city.
That's all I got.

That was said million of year's ago. In fact, KK factored out any outside of city centre.
I would figure they're set on one specific spot at this point.

That outside the city location better just be a negotiation ploy, because if they are seriously considering it, I will truely believe this management team is as dumb as all the haters say they are.

When you say withing and outside the city, are you meaning the city core/center or city limits?
If it is outside the city then they should put it in Lethbridge so I can go to more games. I'd most def get season tickets if that were the case.

I don't think we should get that excited about the potential announcement in the next few days.
I can't see anything concrete being announced before the civic election. Otherwise it would become the central issue of the the mayoral race. Not sure if Nenshi would want to open up that can of worms at this point.

I don't know specifically.
The information I posted is exactly how it was presented to my source. Was just a quick mention, but from a VERY reliable person.

I don't agree at all with having to beat out the US for a WC Finals bid. I think odds are that when Canada does host one, it will be co-hosted with the US. We will never meet the stadium requirments without a crazy dictator running the country or a massive population spike.
A 40,000 person stadium is too big for MLS, and it is stupid to build a purpose built 40,000 person soccer stadium. I'd much rather have a 20,000 person stadium.

Co-hosted bids have been frowned upon by FIFA, both Spain/Portugal and Belgium/Netherlands were knocked for it in the latest round of bidding. If Canada were to co-host with the US I'd be pretty surprised to see Calgary make the list anyways, Toronto and Vancouver would be the obvious candidates and it would seem unlikely that Calgary would bump any of the major US cities down the list. We are talking 20 years down the road here though.

This World Cup stuff has been quite the massive de-rail, so I have no choice but to contribute to it.
Canada hosting the World Cup would be ridiculous essentially on almost all fronts.
We're ranked 80th in the world, behind such powerhouses like Uzbekistan, Sierra Leone and Equitorial Guinea. I suppose the only reason we'd be a viable candidate is economic power and being a nice country, and I suppose it's probably the only way in hell Canada ever qualifies for World Cup anyway (I think we've qualified like once or twice in history and that largely is due to our soft pool, pretty sure we've never won a game at World Cup).
It would be sort of a slap in the face to the rest of the world that actually like, you know, cares about the sport (sorry to the few of you here that do...).
It'd sort of be like if the Dominican Republic was awarded the Winter Olympics.

Qatar is hosting the World Cup in 2022. They're currently ranked 101st in the world. I think economic power has a much greater influence than soccer talent.
