i really hope that this draft goes a long way in turning the ship around in a couple years.
my hope for this offseason, is that the flames target players that aren't considered stop gaps for next season success. I'd prefer letting some of the kids get permanent time in the big leagues, and targetting players who are still reaching their potential.
build thru the draft, don't build thru poor asset management (bad trades for immediate success) or by overpaying UFAs.

I don't think it's coincidence that players trend towards mediocre as their kids get older. Once they have children ship them out.
Kidding.

Good shot but you need to check the status of these players.

So far I'm not seeing anything inspiring from Feaster. Yes he drafted Baertschi....but we have a coach that's against giving young players ice time and I'd really like to see a sophmore plus a team full of comeback stories carry this team into the playoffs. Those odds aren't favourable, there's no rising trend indicative of improvement.
I don't think we have to do anything "on purpose" at the rate things are going right now. This team is right on course to finish last at the rate it's going at. That's the point unfortunately. This is one Flames fan who won't "buy into" what management is trying to sell to us. Fingers crossed for the lotto tonight.

I think that really changed once Iginla was out of the picture. Iginla had a lot of sway in the locker room, and it was probably impossible for any coach to change that.
Next year the remaining vets - Cammy, Tanguay (potentially), Stajan, etc. - will be fighting for ice time with the younger players. I don't see them getting preferential treatment now that Iggy is gone.

We may pick up someone from Philly, given they're in cap trouble and always seem to be in 'buy now' mode. I'm thinking Scott Hartnell, who's signed until he's 37 or so

Article on how Philly may offer sheet one the Blue's RFAs:
http://www.csnphilly.com/article/ano...lyers-holmgren
Quote:
The St. Louis Blues have four restricted-free-agent defenseman and have they have a locked-in cap hit of nearly $7 million for Jay Bouwmeester in 2013-14.
Right now, it’s going to be tough for the Blues to afford re-signing both Alex Pietrangleo and Kevin Shattenkirk with JayBo around.
Which makes you wonder whether Holmgren would try another RFA offer sheet -- this time targeting Pietrangelo.
“My job is to make this team the best it can be,” Holmgren said of offering an RFA sheet or any other move. “So I will look at any and every way to do that.”
It’s definitely something the Blues should worry about.
|
Buying out Briere may make them cap compliant, but if they are going to give Pietrangelo an offer sheet that will make the Blues sweat, the Flyers still will need to dump cap space

If they suck for the next two seasons despite trying to build a good team, well then, it is what it is.
Purposefully trying to suck for the next two seasons (which is what you were suggesting) for 25% chance at getting McDavid is a bad idea.

I was going to say we should just go after Pietrangelo. Then I remembered the four 1st round picks you'd have to give up to do it. No thanks.

I just want Tanguay moved out this season.
I was always a fan of his, and think he still can be a good player, but only as a support player on a good team.
He is dead weight for this team during a rebuild.

I disagree. 25% is the best chance we have to land an ultra-elite player, plus we're guaranteed to re-stock with more young talent. The way this club is structured right now is 3-5 years out..considering the development of our prospects. If we had a good core group of players then we could make rush moves and sacrifice future picks, there's nothing to add-on to so there's no point in rushing things.

Carolina is a team that has historically had an internal cap and with the Staals, Skinner, Ward, and Semin making so much money next season... they may need to dump cap.
With a relatively low budget compared to some teams, they may not be able to use a compliance buyout on a guy like Ruutu and still have money left over for other guys.
If Carolina gave us a 2nd round pick or even a 3rd round pick I would take Ruutu off their hands. 3yrs with AAV 4.75 million left.
edit: actually after reconsidering it, I am not sure Carolina would have to give us a pick, Ruutu should be had for a mid to late raound pick. Assuming he would waive his NMC.

This would get Flames monnahan and the big fin defenseman. Those two > 3 first round picks.
Dont like the glenx trade at all. His contract is great value, he will be 30-40 goals next season. Would need nino and a 2nd imo. Minimum.

Not a chance.
His value will never be higher than right now.

Glencross has more value then that and trading with Edm is very unlikely.
