I may be wrong, but I don't think Cervenka earned any of those performance bonuses. He definitely did not earn any Schedule B bonuses.
|
That being the case then Cervenka cost us $925,000 and a $92,000 signing bonus. I would definitely try to sign him for another year.

Doesn't matter.
You don't purposefully build a crappy team for two straight seasons where the best case scenario gives us a 25% chance at "the next Sydney Crosby".

In one aspect in general, they need to bring some NHL ruggedness in.
2006 Sarich would be ideal, but its 2013 now....that said, Sarich is still by far the toughest guy that has a role over 15 minutes per game.
If you're not keeping him, 1 or ideally 2 defenseman in his mold; nasty guys that other forwards don't want to go in the corner with, and/or, players make sure they know where the guy is when their skating/waiting for a pass in the neutral zone.
They have the puck movers and the PP guys with Wideman, Brodie, and Giordano. Outside of an amazing transformation (the way Sutter turned Regher nasty in 2003) of Smith and Butler (unlikely, plus, they don't have the skill to play 20 mins a night), that's the pressing need on defense, and as overall team toughness.
The forwards also need those type of injections. If Lucic is still willing to play that style, he'd be a good fit (my words aren't tampering, Craig) as an example.
Not sure who those 2D may be, but they get that set, and instantly this team is a lot better and the forwards are a couple inches taller, whoever they are.

That is a LOT of "on purpose" sucking.
Not to mention that at that point, even if we do finish dead last, we only have a 25% chance of hanging onto 1st overall, and actually drafting McDavid.
Sounds like an awful plan to me. Hopefully Flames management has a better plan, and can execute it properly.

i've heard it called tier 1 and tier 2 fans speaking about "something special" where the pres of hockey ops knows more about winning than anyone else in the league.
on topic, i'm not sure exactly when but i can see tanguay, cammy, and stajan not on our roster before the close of the trade deadline next year.

Regehr and Adam Pardy are both UFAs this summer. A guy I'd love to see us go after is Ryan O'Byrne in Toronto. 6'5, 235, stay-at-home defenseman. 104 hits and 60 PIMS in 42 games.

I see Feaster resigning Begin and possibly Jackman. Reliable, can have their dry streaks but are tough and will get stuff done.
Babchuck is done
Kipper...... :'( <3 I will always love you
Taungay will want out
Sarich will go
Carson, Cameron, and jones too
Buy out/ trade? Nemiz
Feaster will trade off Butler
Cervenka will walk
Backlund resign
Glencross extension
I really hope Feaster takes Mohnahan or Lindholm
Glencross/Backlund/Hudler
Baertschi/(Lindholm/Monahan)/Big RFA
Horak/Reinhart/Hanowski
Bancks/????/MgGratten
Giordano/Wideman
Brodie/Cundari
RFA/Ristolaon
Mackey J
Berra/Ramo

Agree. Voracek and or Simmonds I would be very happy with. 23 and 24 years old respectively. Both big bodies and RW which we need! Also very interesting in Horton.
Down the middle possibly add Stepan (22 yrs old RFA) and or Filppula

O'Byrne sounds interesting. That type of player for sure. Nothing flashy, but big, rough and tumble, plays 15-20 minutes a night and doesn't seem (from his career/year to year +/-) like a pylon.

If names like Stepan, Simmonds and Voracek are being tossed around my speculation is that some Flames fans will be very disappointed.

I hope Feaster is smart enough to inquire about Anton Khudobin. I know we have JMac signed for next season and have Berra, Ramo who will eventually come over to play, but im not sold on any of these guys and I really like what Khudobin has done with Boston.
I expect us to remain busy. Management does not want to be rebuilding for a long time, I expect some significant moves/signings this season like we saw last offseason. Would love to add Horton and do away with Tanguay.

I can't really see us landing any significant free agents.
It's time for our young players to come in and become full-time players. We've also got to stop trying to bring in millionaires and settle for hockey players who are trying to earn a contract.
I'm sick of watching players who just go through the motions.

I can't see us trading Cammaleri...who will replace him? There are hardly any UFAs worth signing and we now have lots of cap room.

Flames should go after Khudobin. If Kipper is done, and JMac / Berra / Ramo can't pull number one duty, this should be our target. He's NHL ready, as close to a #1 goaltender as there is from a winning team, and has said he wants more playing time an to be a #1.
We should also be making a pitch for Wayne Simmonds, but I'm not holding my breath on that one.
