I'm not even convinced they've drafted properly with their first overalls.

This year? Unlikely. They're deep in Oilerland playoffs right now, they might not win another Draft Stanley Cup ... but they're gonna fight to remain champs.

My my, the smug level on a handful of certain Oiler posters has certainly vanished lately.

If they didn't have the memories of goldfish it would be even better. Any reasonably humble and self aware person would lay low after a couple years of brutal finishes ... let alone 4.

Wow... if Calgary loses the rest of their games, and Carolina / Tampa / Edmonton / Nashville each win atleast one game of their remaining games, we're back in 4th, maybe 5th spot.

No problems scoring goals in March yet the Oilers have been scoring one goal a game almost all of April. If that's not playing it safe for another draft pick

Dollars to donuts it will be a defenseman, just to say that they "identified a need" (like anyone else in the casual hockey world could see) after drafting top forwards the past 3 years, and that this player will compliment Schultz and be the Taylor Hall equivalent of a defensemen.
Those media not yet onto the pattern of BS that Lowe has created, will lap this up and say now, with the forwards in place, and now the best defenseman they had since Pronger to solidify things, proclaim that the Oilers have found that missing piece/element, and now, the 13-14 season is to be the one for the Oilers to break out.
Don't need the Wings to help them, they can rely on turning on TSN and listening to McKenize if they are stuck.

They should have taken Seguin, Huberdeau, and either Murray or Galchenyuk.

I'd put Landeskog above Huberdeau. Hall has been better than Seguin without question this season. Last years draft is too soon to judge

A center depth of Seguin and RNH/Huberdeau + Murray on the back end is a solid trio to build around.
xx-Seguin/Huberdeau-Eberle
xx-Seguin/Huberdeau-Gagner?
Murray-Schultz
xxx-xxx
xxx-xxx
Now that would be much better, so I'm glad they picked who they did.

Why? Yak has already proven to be a little puke and Galchenyuk is a +11, while Yak is a -9. Similar points with 2 minutes less avg ice time.

2008: Eberle was a great pick
2009- Paajarvi looks to be underwhelming
2010 - Hall has been good, but Seguin as a center and not as injury prone could be argued as a better pick.
2011- RNH is small and very injury prone so far. Landeskog plays a more physical style that could be better than another soft, small player like RNH.
2012 - They wouldve been better off taking Murray or Galchenyuk than Yakupov. Murray because they need defence. And I honestly think Galchenyuk will be the best player from this draft. If not for his draft year injury he would of been 1st overall. Galchenyuk will be huge for MTL for years.

Landeskog - Seguin - Eberle
Murray - Schultz
The Oilers could of been looking so much better

I posted a much longer and more thorough response to their drafting in the Oilers losing forever thread.
But a few quick points from that are:
2007: Voracek or Couture over Gagner are arguable
2012: Galchenyuk or Trouba are my favourites alternatives here a year later. Trouba looked better than Hamilton at the WJC IMO and looks like a total stud. I think he's passed Murray. They could have dealt down and taken Trouba. That said Yakupov could've been an okay pick in different scenarios.
They ended up with too many small centres and too many goalscoring wingers from the draft while ending up with zero size at centre, zero powerforwards and zero top pairing defensemen. And obviously they can't find all 3 with their first rounder this year Guys like Seguin, Landeskog and Trouba could have given the Oil a different look and made them harder to play against. So far teams aren't finding it hard to play against the Oiler's special collection of crazy offensive talent except when a man down.

Congrats to the Bhawks on clinching 1st overall in the NHL as they beat the lowly Oilers 4-1. Cory Crawford took over in net in the 1st period because Emery got injured. Emery still gets the win since the Bhawks scored the GWG 8 minutes into the game. The other 3 games had the teams that have clinched playoff spots lose. Detroit is back at the controls for getting into the playoffs with a 3-1 win over the Kings. Detroit is wicked on the PP. Lightning struck the Leafs as Tampa won 4-1, nice to see St. Louis get the hattrick. The Coyotes beat the Sharkies 2-1 in reg time and there were lots of shots. Greiss played well in net for SJ in the loss, he faced 32 shots. Smith faced 34 shots.

You can't seriously be comparing +/- between a player on a top 4 team in the East and a player on one of the worst teams in the NHL.
