2nd rounder went to Toronto with Wayne Primeau for Anton Stralman, Colin Stuart and a seventh-round draft pick in 2012. Chicago acquired it from Toronto and picked Brandon Saad.
3rd rounder went to Edmonton with Aaron Johnson for Steve Staios.
5th rounder went to the Rangers along with Erixon for Horak and the Wotherspoon and Grandlund picks.
7th rounder went to the Thrashers for Freddie Modin. Winnipeg traded it to San Jose.

Up until this year, that was the most important draft for the Flames in 10 years.
|
There is no question in my mind that, if all the players were put back in the same draft, they would go top 40.
I remember when the Flames picked Gaudreau that year. Boston was fuming, and Bob Mckenzie had said shortly after that despite his size, that was a huge addition that snuck under the radar. At that point I knew our drafting was turning around.

Rushing Brossoit to the NHL behind a bad team could destroy him.
2013-14 Flames goaltending IMO:
NHL
1. The best non-NHL goalie #1
2. The best non-NHL goalie #2
AHL
1. Danny Taylor
2. Laurent Brossoit
Europe:
Ortio
Irving doesn't re-signed. Kipper retired or traded. Time for the Kipper and Iginla era to completely end.

If you guys don't mind a scouting report from an Oilers fan, I'll provide this.
I'm a big Oil Kings fan and go to a lot of their games and have watched Brossoit a great deal. In my view, he's not the best goalie on the team. Tristan Jarry is the best athlete and the best prospect. I think Jarry's numbers are better playing a backup role. He'll be the starter next season and has the potential to go in the second round, but third or fourth is more likely. I think LB went in the sixth, if I recall correctly.
Having said this, Brossoit is l,ights out these playoffs. He's big and his positional play is excellent. He's a good prospect but I think he'll never be more than a backup at the NHL level and his likely role is as an AHL goalie who has a (long) shot as an NHL backup. His teammate love him so he'll be a good guy in the room.
Watch Jarry, however. He's younger and will be better. He has NHL starter potential.

How would you rank Dreidger next to Broissoit?

He has a good shot at a Mem Cup this year. Hopefully he got the butterflies out of his system last year.

Thank you Jay Feaster and the Flames organization for this opportunity.

Well, I'm no scout, but I would have said a year ago that Dreidger is a better goalie, but Brossoit is having a great year. Wasn't Dreidger drafted in the early or mid third round? I don't recall. Brossoit went in the sixth, I do recall. Brossoit is a little bigger and is playing very well. He seems to be a money goalie in that he did very well in the playoffs last year, and is doing that again. I attended all three OKs first-round games against Kootenay and he was lights out. I admit that I don't know Dreidger as well, but I think he's the better prospect. NHL teams are going bigger goalies and LB fits the bill, as does Dreidger who is not small although LB is slightly bigger, I think. Of the three of them, I like Jarry the best. You guys shouldn't expect to see Brossoit for several years, if he makes it at all. My money is on him never being an NHL regular, although I know that's not what the fans want to hear. Goalies are a crap shoot. We'll get a better comparison if the Kings play Calgary in the playoffs.
Edit: Bear in mind that Brossoit plays in front of a top-notch defense. That will make his numbers look better.

From what I've been hearing at my end, it sounds like it's going to be Taylor as starter in Abbotsford next season with Brossoit as the backup. IMO, this is the best scenario for LB's development.
You've got a great goalie coach in Sigalet and an elite AHL goalie showing you the ropes.
I feel like I should caution everyone though. Don't be surprised or angry if he starts the year in the ECHL. It's not unusual for a rookie goalie to start there or even spend some time there at some point.

No idea.
He had elective eye surgery not a few weeks back. He was back on the ice yesterday practicing, so that's a good sign.
On a side note, Taylor was called up yesterday as a precaution in case Kipper was traded. So I think Kipper was closer to being traded than we think.

I was actually thinking a couple of weeks ago that he might go back into the draft to see if he could improve his status. It looks like a weak year for goalies.
I'm glad we were able to sign him.

Whenever I look at the plethora of fire Feaster threads I think of this. Feaster has made a significant impact in terms of drafting for the Flames.
I'm happy we signed Brossoit, this is another thing that Feaster is making sure he's doing. He's getting a lot of these guys signed to their ELCs so that we can avoid another Tim Erixon situation.

I think many people would give credit to Weisbrod for those picks, not Feaster
