Best case scenario: Blues miss the playoffs this year and next. Flames get a top 14 pick that wins the draft lottery.
Second best scenario: Blues make the playoffs in the 8th seed and get swept in the first round. Flames pick 15th this year.

Not sure we should have been hoping for much more at this stage.
Our best players were/are not very good.

I'm generally a Feaster supporter, but this trade is pretty bad. There was no reason to trade Bouwmeester unless someone was willing to overpay, and the Blues certainly did not.

I'm guessing it's because they are going to be very aggressive on July 1st. No other reason I can think of as to why they didn't eat any salary because if they aren't going after guys this summer, might not be at floor.

Hope we can package two of our firsts to try to grab a top-three pick in this draft.

There is no way you are going to get a great prospect and a pick for a guy with a large cap hit based on his production and consistency on defense. Jay was great this year, and he only has one year left on his contract. He was going to leave anyway, and right now he had the most trade value he has had since becoming a flame. We now have 3, 1st round picks in what is likely the deepest draft since 2003.
|
Then they should have kept him. It's a large cap hit for other teams against the cap but for the Flames who I suspect will be well under the cap next year, whether Bouw makes 5 or 6 or 7 or 8 million doesn't really matter. Unless they suddenly think they can still contend and start loading on free agents. Trade him because he's crap, not because it saves money.
With this suddenly free 7 million, what should the Flames do? All FAs are old? Do we give offer sheets for young RFAs, that could be a disaster.
That said I do not dislike the trade. I like the 1st rounder and as other have said, it could packaged with something else.

Dominant???
Come on. Bouwmeester has been dynamic in the offensive end this year...finally. 3 years too late.
But to say he's been dominant is so misleading. He's -11. He hasn't been exceptional in his own end or anything.

Bouwmeester was the only d-man outside Brodie who actually played defense this year, none of the other 4 do.
This just guarantees we get MacKinnon, because we're going to be a bad team without Bouw, much worse than we were with him.
|
So, how about this ... the trade is good because now we'll get MacKinnon?!

That's what Feaster supporters don't understand... With all that cap space, who will come here? Players want to win too.
How many UFAs are going to sign with a team in rebuild mode? Better yet, what kind of players would want to sign here?

At the end of the day its great that the Flames cleared a wack of cap space, but who is seriously going to want to sign with this team in the off season. I'm sure Hudler and DW look at each other every day and have regrets.
That cap space is probably going to go to waste

Couple of things:
Bouw's NTC - maybe he only wanted to go to STL due to connection his family has with Hitchcock. Could have been only a couple of teams he was interested in similar to Iginla which makes Feaster's job hard.
The return - assuming that multiple parties were bidding, the first rounder must have been the sticking point. Holland wasn't bluffing when he said he didn't want to move his first rounder. If Feaster was insisting on a 1st rounder for Bouw and he got it, good for him sticking to his guns.
Lastly - return is better than D'Agostini and a 2nd rounder like we heard at last years draft, no?

Actually if the standings finish the way they are now, the Flames will have two 1sts in 2013, not three. The Blues 1st would move to 2014.

For sure I would say. And again - Berra isn't a complete unknown. He's a guy who's name has bounced around for a long-time. My reaction when I heard his inclusion was not one of enthusiasm but certainly one of "hmmm - that guy - interesting".
Flames appear to be trying to give themselves numerous options for net.
