How does that hurt their pro chances any more then a College bound guy not signing? They both end up free agents after the same amount of time... the CHL guy just has to go through the draft another time that's the only difference.

I am not convinced about the Boston deal being a better deal, the two college guys are aggressive and go the net, that is what the Flames are missing these days. If you are not close to the top on goalie interference stats, you will be close to the bottom in everything else.

There's an Air Canada charter enroute from YYC-PIT right now. Imagine that he's on it.

I highly doubt Iginla does that. Everyone knew his list was out there. Iginla had already come to terms with leaving the Flames and going to a contender. Do you think he's going to go completely out of that mindset and waste the rest of this season because there's a deal lined up with Boston and not Pittsburgh? Obviously if you give him the choice he chooses Pittsburgh. But when push comes to shove do you actually think he'd choose languishing on the Flames over Boston? I guess there's a chance he stays, but I'd put it at 1%. That's worth the risk to get the Boston return over the Pittsburgh one (assuming the 1st in the Boston trade was non-conditional - which it likely was as Chiarelli admitted there was never any extension talk brought up during trade talks).

So this is what collective psychosis looks like.
Lacking ANY real information, everyone just makes #### up and presents it as fact.

Yes, he said Weisbrod was familiar with them. BUt that does not mean they asked for them.
The impression that I get is that the Pens threw these guys out there.
Once the Flames were going with the Pitt deal, they started chatting up the players.

Makes what up exactly? With regards to how the trade went down, Feaster, Iginla and Chiarelli were pretty clear with how it went down.

I guess that's true. There is still a big advantage most of the time for junior players accepting an ELC and not re-entrering the draft though. Most of the time that a college player is 22 or 23 and not signed, it's not because they turned an offer down, but rather because they weren't given one. If they are a late bloomer and are approaching free agency, there is pretty big advantage for them to not signing and becoming a free agent.
The junior players (being younger and less of a known commodity) in these situations are gambling with a hige risk whereas an older college player being offered a deal has way more information and would be taking more of a calculated risk if they turned down the offer from their team.

Preety underwhelming return for Iginla.. but in fairness, Feaster didnt really have much leverage considering that Iggy made his choice clear and Shero knew it.
With said, i would've thought you guys would get atleast one of Maata/Bennett/Despres/Pouliot/Harrington and Dumoulin.

If we sent off, oh say, Arnold and Gordon, my guess is 70% of this board would have no idea who we sent off. It's something I've come to learn in my 4 years on CP. Most of our fan base think they know about our prospects and really have no clue, but won't admit their ignorance.
So I don't blame the Pens faithful for having no idea who they are.

A player in the NCAA cannot sign a pro contract. The player can quit the NCAA at any time though, and go pro.
When a team drafts a player that goes NCAA, the team owns that player's rights for 4 years (unlike a CHL player, for whom the team has their rights for 2 years).
If the player leaves school in less than 4 years, the team continues to own their rights and the player can sign with that team only (or wait out the 4 years).
If the player remains in school for 4 years, ending in April, that leaves 4 months on the teams' 4 year rights ownership. The team must sign them by August of they become a UFA.

Yeah and for good reason. Arnold and Gordon won't likely amount to much either.

During Chiarelli's press conference today, he said the 1st round pick in the offer was non-conditional.
He also said that he was told at the beginning of the process that Iginla would be willing to waive the NTC to come to Boston... right up until the point where he was asked to.
Also said that at noon yesterday, Feaster called him and said they had a deal.

So what's to keep a kid like Gaudreau from playing all 4 years, and then waiting a couple months after graduation so he can sign with whoever he wants? Seems like this is something that should've been addressed in the new CBA. Makes drafting college guy seem very risky. We could lose Gaudreau, Gillies, Jankowski, Arnold, etc. for nothing if they decide they don't want to come to Calgary. For that matter, what's the possibility of losing Ramage this summer?

I have been thinking about this deal all day and it really kills any faith I have in Feaster. Hearing our pro-scouts like these college prospects means little to me. They loved Byron so much to include a 2nd round pick to get him and we have since waived him once with no one picking him up. Feaster gets just schooled in big deals I hate that he is handling this rebuild.
The Boston deal wasn't ideal either but was better and I like that team more than Pitt. Feaster has done nothing but piss off rival GM's and continue to be a joke when it comes to trades. I am happy for Iggy but disappointed management couldn't get one of those 5 D prospects.
It is going to be a long few years in Calgary

It is a risk with college players but in reality, few ever do that - I can't even think of the last occurance (Schultz was a modified case).
Also, there is an incentive for them to sign right away - if they can join the pro team and get 10 games in, they can burn a year of their ELC and get one year closer to making more money

You realize Iggy picked the Penguins do you not?
Quote:
The Bruins GM said he then received a call from the Flames at about 11:45pm et on Wednesday night saying that it was the "player's choice" and that Iginla was going to be dealt to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Chiarelli also said he was not upset with Flames GM Jay Feaster or the Calgary Flames. "This kind of stuff happens more than you know," he explained.
|
I get you hate Feaster, but you don't need to make up ignorant reasons to justify it.

Of course they are going to say they love these prospects. It's just token post trade chit-chat.
The bottom line is that Jarome decided where he wanted to go and Feaster pretty much had to take the offer or leave it. It's not like Feaster looked at Pittsburgh's prospect list and thought; "Y ou know, Bennett Pouliot and Maatta are all nice, but we really like Agostino and Hanowski...".
With no other teams able or willing to bid, Shero was pretty much able to set the terms. Or we could have made a stand and not traded him and let him walk.

Pittsburgh really played this brilliantly. They gained all the leverage when they acquired Morrow and Murray, which showed Iginla they were all in this year, and by doing so for none of their top 5 prospects were able to make a lower offer than Boston. Iginla having a NMC made everyone else irrelevant at that point, it was Pittsburgh or nothing.
