We needed a center, now we may have a good young center. We needed toughness, now we have a very tough player, who can't be any worse than how Jackman has played. The Flames have never drafted well anyway,so who cares if they give up a first and third

I have watched a lot on tv. I like the way the av's play. No i don't think he will be the flames best player. I do think he has a very good chance of becoming a selke winner in the future though. Thats a good start for the flames but they need better players around him if they want to contend for the cup.

Yeah, well that's what gives me pause. If you could guarantee that he'd stay, then the worst case scenario is that you have an overpaid 50-point center with good defensive instincts. That by itself wouldn't move the team forward in any huge way but it wouldn't be the end of the world.

If however he leaves before any kind of rebuild can take effect, in long term perspective it's pretty much a waste of a first rounder because they're unlikely to be making any deep playoff runs with O'Reilly in the next couple of seasons. I don't know. This is a player that has already taken a very hard stance in the contract negotiations with the team he was drafted and developed by. Why would he stay in Calgary if he basically already has the ticket out?

Fair enough, I just cannot ever remember you liking something the team did and posting about a Flames positive. So you are hoping the Av's match?

Is this a rebuild move by your definition or no?
Nope

Somewhere in middle of rebuild win now.

Not rebuild because I think this keeps us in 6-10 range so not getting any top picks and likely not selling off/bringing in young guys because always close to play-offs.

Not win now because O'Reilly can be helpful for a number of years.

There was no Canucks offer.

If O'Reilly came in here and played like Stajan did in his first two seasons, onlythis time with a 6.5M ticket.... could you imagine the uproar? lol

I honestly can't tell you which move moon has liked that the Flames have made since I started posting. No offense, at least he shows up for wins.

I don't see a scenario anytime soon where the Avs will be able to offer the type of money that could deter the Flames from keeping any of their prospects. If Sven turns out to be worth a lot of money the Flames will match and if the Avs try to drive his price to a ridiculous level they could let him go to the Avs for the ridiculous contract and take the picks.

Conflicting reports. No surprise the Canucks decline they were writing an offer.

More likely serious talks, intention to actually write an offer, but got scooped. Able to say "no offer", but in reality the negotiations were all verbal.

I think there was a Canucks offer coming.

Probably.

Don't hate if they don't because we aren't giving up the farm and Feasters has shown he will make moves to keep that pick from top 5 or rebuild anyways but think this keeps us middle if road for next 3 years or so and don't see thus team becoming contender anytime soon without a lot if draft luck.

I don't agree with Feaster and his vision of the team and where it should go so not surprising that overall I haven't liked a lot if moves lately.

A qualifying offer is a contract offer, the Flames would be contractually bound to pay ROR 6.5 million dollars a year if they made a qualifying offer and he accepted. The only way they would not be bound to pay him that would be if ROR and his agent rejected the 6.5 million offer and wanted more money, completely misread the market and ended up signing for less. It is not some sort of negotiating ploy, it is a contract offer from the Flames to ROR to retain his rights. Not sure what world we are living in where ROR is offered 6.5 million a year and turns it down to negotiate a lower salary.
I think you are technically correct, but there is also the option of salary arbitration if he doesn't perform to the $6.5M level. I don't think he was eligible for arbitration this time hence the hold out. So I think Feaster was smart because if he performs to that level then the Flames pay him, if he doesn't they can offer him less of a deal and then file for arbitration.
