Comparisons to Chucko are unfair. I reserve judgement as I know little about this kid, but many here were up in arms about the Baertschi pick last year, so go figure. He could just as well be a Blake Wheeler type off-the-board pick as another Chucko.

Maybe I missed this because I haven't read every post, but is this kid any relation to Lou Jankowski who played for the hockey Stampeders in the late '50's?

Yep, great hockey bloodlines. Related to Red Kelly is a pretty cool relation.

There's other reasons why teams didn't trade up to get him. Teams that wanted him may not have had the assets to complete the trade, or the teams ahead of the Flames wanted other players that were available and therefore not willing to deal their pick to the team interested in Jankowski

Gotta be #####ting me.
Some people do just like to whine for the sake of whining. Unreal.

He's the one who proclaimed we have been in deficit spending trading picks. Then he proceeds to have a deal for our 1st done, trades away two 2nd round picks.
Champions are built through the draft.

Apparently Jankowski had a group interview with 35-40 people earlier today. That's some kind of interrogation.

Awesome pick! I know nothing of this kid nor did I prior. However, I know the Flames weren't picking in the top 3 so as a fan I'm looking for something fun and exciting. This is more fun and exciting than some random guy in the 10-30 range that was projected in that range because he's going to be a sure bet 3rd line leader hard working type. Meh, we've done that before.
There's too much fun about this kid to not like. Growing, getting better now, youngest kid in the draft, skilled, and just intriguing because it's way out there! Being a fan is about trying to have a good time!
YAY!!

1. He never made the trade
2. You don't know what the return might have been (You can't criticize it!!)
3. He's brought in one more 2nd rounder than he's traded away. 3 to 2

Honestly, I didn't mine the flames picking up Jankowski IF all the big talent was gone by 14th. However, TT was available at 14th and the flames passed, which I feel like was a better player.
If the flames are indeed going for BPA then TT would win easily, that's why I feel like they went a bit off course.
Risky move, but I hope it turns out. And if we can land Collberg with that second, I'll welcome it even more.
The only thing I wish the flames did, was to move up two spots to draft Grigorenko, now that, would have been a better risk imo, but still, I believe in our scouts and am sure they made a good deal.

Mark's Grandfather, Lou, played for the old WHL Calgary Stampeders in the late 50s and early 60s, scoring 57 goals in 69 games in 1960-61 as a 29 year-old. After he retired, he worked as a scout, based in Calgary, for various teams over 15 years.
He left scouting in 1993, and spent the final years of his life split between Calgary and the Tampa area (he must have loved 2004). He died in 2010.

During his interview on the Fan, Mark said that he has been to Calgary before visiting his family, and has been to the Stampede.

It's not by choice he's brought in 2 2nd round picks, his hand was forced.

Sure, he could sign his ELC tomorrow. But he hasn't even played in the CHL or the USHL, so he's still a few steps away from the AHL. Whereas TT has been playing against men in SM-Liiga.
And then you have quotes like this:
Quote:
Jankowski has a number of decisions to make over the next three months. He has made a commitment to play at Providence College, but he may delay his enrolment for a year and play either in the United States Hockey League or the British Columbia Hockey League.
“I think if I went to Providece right away I could play, but if I took that extra year I’ll be more effective,” he said. “You can never go too late, but some people go too early.”

Picking a guy from the BCHL should make anyone nervous. We picked a guy who hasn't even started playing at that level yet, and he doesn't seem to be in any kind of hurry to start upping his quality of competition. If I had to pick a prospect to be a future Group 6 UFA, Jankowski would fit the bill perfectly.

Don't know, but like 99%(maybe a little less) of the people on this thread, I've seen him play about as much as most players drafted tonight. The only thing I know about him, Maatta, Gaunce, and even Yakopov, is what the Hockey News and the TSN experts have to say.
BTW, I wonder how many junior games Pierre McGuire has seen this year. I bet he hasn't seen Jankowski play much more than any other fan.
