Thank you Gregg Williams. What a scum bag. A shame Drew and Payton gave him a ring.

Just when I thought I couldn't hate Williams any more than I already did. He pretty much cost them a ring this year, and I was already concerned he's turned some of their younger, promising D players like Malcolm Jenkins into vicious headhunters. Now that seems to be confirmed.
That guy should never set foot in Louisiana again. What a disaster.

I guarantee the Saints aren't the only team in the NFL that does this. I'm willing to bet at least a quarter of the teams do, but they just haven't been caught yet. The Saints should be punished hard for this, and so should every other team that gets caught for it. But if you think the Saints are the only team doing it you're delusional

Oh ya I totally bet other teams are doing it, just like spygate. Unfortunately its who gets caught. I wonder what disgruntled Saints D player went to the media about this one..

Sounds like Payton knew about it the whole time and did dick all to stop it.

Washington Post reporting Williams had the same system when with the Redskins.

Well, I'm obviously disappointed with what's happening in New Orleans.
I'm not surprised at the fact that there was a bounty system, those exist with most, if not all teams. I am surprised that they were dumb and/or cocky enough to continue the practice after being warned by the league.
Williams has always had a bad reputation, that was known when he was hired. I knew Payton wasn't as revered outside of New Orleans as we'd like to think he is, he's had his issues in the past, as well, especially with some of the company he keeps. GM Mickey Loomis is the one that surprises me the most. He's made very few mistakes in his time there. He was the one instructed by the owner to make sure the bounties stopped, and he either flat out ignored that order, or was overrun by his subordinates. Either way, it's unacceptable.
I expect well over a million in fines, multiple draft picks lost, and a long list of suspensions. I wouldn't be surprised if Payton/Loomis are fired.

I'd really be shocked if they don't end up in Miami.

Payton was virtually completely hands off on the defensive side of things. He may have known, he may not have thought it was as serious as these allegations are making it seem. Darren Sharper was just on ESPN and refuted that there were pools of money for injuring players. They were just received for the first fumble/interception/sack. Oh and to say fire Payton and Loomis? May as well kill the organization.

And I'd just like to add that a lot of ex players are coming out and saying that this is a very common thing in the NFL. Nothing new to see here folks. We just had the unfortunateness of somebody coming out with the info.

Yup, and everyone cheats on their taxes. Thing is it's only the guy who gets caught who gets hammered. Saints should prepare for the Ben Dover NFL treatment.

It's not the bounties that are going to bring the biggest penalties, it's the deliberate refusal to comply with the order from the league. It doesn't matter how many teams do it, or what the bounties were for.
Goodell has been under the microscope from players and fans about his dedication to player safety, if he doesn't come down hard on this, he'll look like a hypocrite.
I'm not making excuses for my team, and I'm preparing for the worst.

Current Ravens players have already said that they take out bounties. Why shouldn't they be punished too then? What about all other teams that Gregg Williams has coached? It seems to be common knowledge that every team he's been on has had these bounties. Redskins, Bills, Titans, Jags. And honestly if you're not hitting to hurt in the NFL without incentive you're not going to be in the league. This is shaping up as making the Saints and these "findings" the scapegoat for the growing concussion problem imho. If this is as bad as it sounds shouldnt Williams be banned from coaching again or at least receive a several year suspension?

The NFL's release said that Payton was aware and didn't stop it. The NFL's release was pretty blunt, that's for sure.
Don't care if it sneaks out or not, and I am sure this happens the odd time or for a certain player this wasn't a one time thing, it went on for 3 years in that organization with everyone turning a blind eye to it. For league, and Players Association, that battles with each other at time over player safety, and then to have this hypocritical actions going on fairly wide open, is brutal.
Interesting thought on Profootballtalk....with no first round draft pick to lose (which is what the Pats, among heavy fines, got taken away from them with Spygate, which is a less offensive, optics wise, then targeting to take guys out with an injury) is to lose the franchise tag. With Brees and the Saints far apart on a contract, not having that franchise tag to use on him could mean he's a free agent in a couple weeks.

I'm not too worried about Brees going elsewhere (in the sense I don't think he will), but Carl Nicks. Losing the franchise tag basically means arguably the best guard in the NFL will be gone...though its starting to look that way anyway with the Brees negotiations stalling. Basically sounds like the Saints offered him Brady money, but he wants Manning (first 3 years) money.
Obviously going to be interesting as things go forward. I hate how I'm basically forced to follow this depressing storyline for the off-season, was already hurting enough from how the season ended.

Well then Darren Sharper was either unaware or downright lying. Williams has come out and admitted to it. And sorry, but the ad populum argument isn't going to hold here. The Saints are going to get hit hard for this, and any other team that gets caught in the future will get hit harder.

Williams only admitted to a pay for performance. Exactly what Sharper said. And why do you think the Saints should be punished as opposed to say a team like the Ravens where both Suggs and Billick have stated that they've taken out bounties on players including Mendenhall and Ward? Or even other teams that Williams has been on that has allowed his pay "system" to be used?

You aren't grasping what they're going to be punished for. They'll be punished for ignoring the league directive after the fact. That's why the Ravens, Steelers, Eagles, whoever else you want to name, won't be punished.
