2012 NFL Offseason Thread
I figure the 2011 thread can probably die.
http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/75...ning-next-week
I'm thinking the Colts are going to end up getting nothing for Peyton. I don't know why he would defer his bonus so that the Colts could trade him wherever they want. It makes way more sense for him to sit there and let the contract run out so he can choose which team to go to.

Last season with a new regime the Niners really stirred up a lot of their fans when they didn't wade into the FA signing feeding frenzy. People were getting irate that the team wasn't willing to do anything to improve.
Well the team had decided that with the shortened FA period that there may be some bargains available. The only FA they aggressively pursued was Burress and he wasn't interested. They let Baas go and picked up Goodwin for a lot less with no drop off in production. Saw Goldson leave looking for a big payday but come back when he didn't get it. Got Carlos Rogers on a one year deal when he didn't get the CB money he was expecting.
This season with a team that has shown it can compete, I expect the 49ers to be a more attractive destination. But I also still expect the management to take a similar tact as last year. They want to try and sign their own free agents (Alex Smith, Rogers, Morgan, Goldson, Brooks to name a few) and target an impact WR again. Otherwise they have shown they want to build through the draft.

The Chiefs have two pretty key upcoming free agents in Dwayne Bowe, and Brandon Carr. The team has no cap issues whatsoever, so finding the money to pay these two won't be the issue. But maybe Bowe wants to go to a team who has a QB with some arm strength? Carr is a decent corner, who can play man to man in the Chiefs scheme, not as good as Flowers, but still a good #2 corner. I hope they can find a way to keep both these guys.

I'm guessing they'll probably franchise Bowe, but I'd love to see Eagles let DeSean walk and go after Bowe. We haven't had a big, physical receiver like that since T.O. Mind you, there are probably 25 other teams who will be interested in him as well.

Saints priorities: Sign Drew Brees, Carl Nicks, and Marques Colston. Then, find players to match Steve Spagnuolo's defense.
The Saints front office usually makes solid personnel decisions, I don't ever get too concerned about that. I'm excited to see the defensive transformation. Yes, I'd like to see Bowe come back to the bayou.

They'll just tag Brees if it comes down to that, won't they?

I know 49ers beat writers have mentioned both of those guys, both are 49er positions of need. And the Niners also have cap space.
Will either be franchised?
Edit: Colson has also been mentioned - well, almost any WR of stature has been mentioned, although there are debate about whether Harbaugh would be willing to deal with "character issue" guys after Edwards never panned out. He already needs to manage one guy in Crabtree.

Peyton Manning cleared by two doctors to resume NFL career:
http://content.usatoday.com/communit...e-nfl-career/1
Indy also hired a new DC:
Manusky who was the Chargers DC last season and the 49ers DC in the 4 years prior to that.

Yeah, there's no way they let Brees walk. I'm hoping they sign him soon and they can use the tag on Nicks.

Some key points from Roger Goodell's annual press conference today:
13 Thursday night games starting next year in week 2.
All 32 NFL teams will be guaranteed at least one prime time game over the course of the 2012 season.
The league wants to have another regular season game in Mexico.
Open to play another outdoor SB after the one in 2014 if it goes good.
The league will discuss adding independent neurologists to the sideline for next season to handle diagnosing concussions.

I hate them! Often they're pretty sloppy games due to the lack of prep time. Plus as it gets later into the season, you get guys sitting out who would normally play if it was on Sunday.
I play fantasy football...and it can really throw a wrench into your plans if you have two guys at a position, and one guy is questionable for Sunday, and the other guy is playing Thursday night.
Of course...I still watch.

Yeah, I would expect them to franchise Bowe if they can't get a deal done. If they let him hit the market, there will be a lot of interested teams. I can't see them franchising Carr to let Bowe walk. I hope they can get deals done with both guys and avoid the franchise tag.

Aaron Rodgers wins the MVP award and it wasn't even close. 48-2 over Drew Brees.
Suggs wins the defensive player of the year.
Harbough (SF) wins coach of the year.
Newton wins rookie of the year.

These is a mind boggling little fact Bailtmore now is tied for 2nd with NYG with most second most defensive Players of the Year Awards for a franchise, to think they have been only around since 96 too.
Haloti Ngata likely will be taking home that award someday too, when healthy the man might be the best defensive player in the NFL.

Not sure what Brees has to do to win the damn MVP, maybe throw for 6000Yds and 60 TD's. Rodgers was great as well, but Drew slaughtered a 30 year old record and guided the best offence in NFL history.

Both guys had remarkable years, but this was a no-brainer.
Look past the numbers only thing....but even then its virtually identical in all important categories.
Rodgers team won 15 games with one of the worst defenses ( yards wise)....in nfl history. He threw for 45 td's, and only 6 int's....all without anything resembling a decent running game.
Brees threw for 1 more TD but also played one more game...while throwing more INT's than all but 8 other starters in the league...and while having one of the better running games in the whole league supporting him.
There's only one award for MVP....and it went to the right guy...that doesnt mean Brees wasnt worthy any other seaon though.

Unfortunately Ngata probably won't get the defensive player of the year. Tackles rarely win them, because the award is so stat biased. A tackle hasn't won in 12 seasons and the previous 2 who won both had over 10 sacks I believe (Sapp and Stubblefield). Tackles make contributions in ways that don't show up on the stat sheet and thus are overlooked for the award, especially those in a 3-4 defense.
