Well lets compare the murder rate for Canada vs. Mexico then as a country. I'm willing to bet what the result will be.

I am not saying there are less murders in Mexico. It is pretty clear there are parts of the Country that are really really ####ed up. If you are not ######ed though and make intelligent decisions when you are down there it is not much different than here.
If you get hammered in Calgary and head downtown at 3AM to try and score some coke you are far more likely to get messed up that if you go out for dinner and a movie. It is all about the situations you put yourself in. Sure, there is a chance you could get rolled in the parking lot of the movie theater but it is a very very slim one.

I'm not comparing the straight Mexican murder rate. The rate I'm comparing cites specifically Canadians murdered that visit Mexico. The Mayan Riviera I would imagine would be a large component of those visits.
Bottom line my numbers are trying to proxy an answer to the question of: I can spend next week in Calgary or Mexico, which place am I more likely to get murdered within that week in? While the chances of getting murdered period in one week visit are exceedingly low, so is your chance of getting murdered in Calgary, in fact even more exceedingly low according to those numbers. Therefore Mexico would be the answer!

my guess is that some meddling kids and thier dog will expose the real criminal here. i also beleive that is not her husband with her in mexico, it is a guy wearing a mask (but the kids will prove this).......
good to hear that she is awake. hopefully she can provide some info on what happened to the authorities.
the last time the family and i were in mexico i had trouble sleeping one night, so i went for a midnight walk around the resort. while i would still consider going to mexico, i think i'd opt not to walk around at night by myself.......

This seems like an appropriate place to ask this: Anybody want to carpool to a Tijuana strip club after the Flames/Ducks game in March?

I really have to question those who state they would rather go to Jamaica than Mexico or that Jamaica is safe. Jamaica is the biggest dump outside of Haiti in the Caribbean.

Agree biased statistics
The mounting murders are occurring mainly between near all the border towns within a hour N of the USA & Mexico border below Texas, New Mexico and California. MS13 and the Los Zetas basically rule that territory over the police and even Mexican govt. They are ruthless, behead police officers, jugdes, prosicutors. Kill, torture anyone that is the wrong place at the wrong time. Much like what was happening in Columbia daily.
I have been to the Mayan, Cabo, PV 5 times. Lastime was 2 years ago.
Its like anywhere staying out at late at night in a strange place and you increase the odds of being in a bad situation.
In Playa De Carma we were having a good time with about 20 other resort vacationers. It was 10pm and about 4 pickups of what could of been Police, Federalia or thugs they all had guns. No idea what was going on but my wife and I caught a hotel shuttle a got the ef out of there.
I know some people that stayed and encountered problems that night.
Personally I have never had any problems in resort Mexico, but I don't think I would go several other City's/towns there. Just asking for trouble.

Just like anywhere you go you can choose to put yourself in compromising situations.
Kingston is a vicious city, and I would never go there.
Our resort was in Montego Bay, and we never left it because I didn't want to put ourselves in a situation that was dangerous.
With that said, I enjoyed Jamaica much more than I have enjoyed my several trips to Mexico over the years.

Normalize the statistics for time and annualize that Mexican Statistic based on an average stay of 2 weeks to be conservative and it's more like
76.6 murders per Million Canadian visitor years
vs.
8 murders per Million people who live in Calgary based on 2011 stats
Adjusting for this indicates you're more likely to get murdered in Mexico spending equal time there. Hell even Edmonton is twice as safe based on that stat.

This makes no sense. We are talking about tourists. I guess someone who visits Calgary for a week in a year should be really worried according to your logic.

This was posted earlier in the thread. While most drug related killings are occuring near the border there are large numbers in the interior. What I find the most disturbing is the escalation of violence in the last two years in all areas. I wonder if 2011 saw the numbers continue the 2009/2010 trends shown below.

And I suppose that's why anecdotal evidence is worth little as I'm the exact opposite, except I found the people in Jamaica to be considerably less friendly, among other things, than in Mexico. Actually, I can't think of a worse place that I've been to than Jamaica. Terrible. But again, anecdotal evidence.

Agreed.
The resort we stayed at is obviously not indicative of the general population, but the same can be said about Mexico.

People who thinks this means that they should avoid all of Mexico are like the people who avoid Aruba just because 2 tourists have killed other tourists there. These incidents can and do happen anywhere. Having said that, if you're planning to leave the resort, Mexico can obviously get a little sketchy, especially near the border. I was in Rosarito in 2009 and saw a police officer walk up to an unconscious guy and shoot him in the head.

I'm not really sure what to say about this.
So I shouldn't avoid Mexico because it could happen anywhere, but when was the last time you saw a police officer shoot someone in the head when they are unconscious?

I'm saying I wouldn't avoid the resorts based on a few isolated incidents that most likely involve non-locals. If you're planning to go off the resorts though, then the widespread violence in the country becomes much more relevant.
As for the shooting, I was walking on a balcony overlooking the town when I heard squealing tires, so I looked back and saw a police car chasing another car that tried and failed to make a 90 degree turn at about 100 kph. The car smashed into a tree and a building and came to rest. There was no movement from inside the car. The police officer got out of his car, walked up to the window, "pop" "pop," and walked away.

Come on, don't be asinine.
If a police officer in the States executed someone who is unconscious what do you think the repercussions would be?
