57 murders in Edmonton per year, cool.

50 murders in Mexico a day, selective statistics at its finest.

Those 50 murders a day are not occurring in Cancun, Mayan, PV, Mazatlan, etc., though. Stay out of trouble like you would at home, and the resort areas are no worse than most other countries.

5 murders per 1.6 million visitors is pretty good in my eyes. I'm going to Mexico in a week or so and I'll feel as safe as I am in Calgary.

Absolutely.

But I wouldn't exactly call Edmonton a hot bed of tourist activity in Canada either.

The article is selective on purpose.

Wherever you live, if you go looking for trouble or put yourself in compromising situations then you are asking for something bad to happen.

But to compare Mexico to Canada is a bit much for me.

Rampant corruption, gang wars, etc. Doesn't exactly sound like my evening news on CTV.

That's because you don't live in Vancouver!

I don't know the circumstances for her beating, but if you're traveling abroad you have to keep your wits about you. I don't care if you're at a resort or some fumbuck hostel. Doing stupid things result in bad experiences. I've been all over the world, and I've had minimal problems because I don't take stupid risks.

I dunno, my very very quick math based on these numbers suggests you are only twice as likely to be murdered in mexico than edmonton. Sure that might be significant, but if you're gonna be killed, better to happen on a beautiful beach than a denny's in mill woods.

The point I'm trying to make is that the article writer cherry picked stats to back up his article that Canada is no different than Mexico, which I think is completely out to lunch.

Don't get me wrong, all my best travel stories involve doing something I probably shouldn't have. I do, however, have a rule to not get black out drunk abroad because that is a recipe for disaster.

Cabo is the safest. Cool hotel.
NSFW!
I assumed the NSFW meant a picture of naked chicks on the beach in Cabo, when it wasn't I was sad.

Misleading statistics that completely disregard time as a function. When you live in Calgary you probably spend on average 49 weeks here vs. 7-14 days when you visit Mexico.

Normalize the statistics for time and annualize that Mexican Statistic based on an average stay of 2 weeks to be conservative and it's more like

76.6 murders per Million Canadian visitor years

vs.

8 murders per Million people who live in Calgary based on 2011 stats

Adjusting for this indicates you're more likely to get murdered in Mexico spending equal time there. Hell even Edmonton is twice as safe based on that stat.

I would suggest that 2 weeks is probably on the high side which makes the numbers even worse.

Heck, as you say - a place that makes Edmonton look THAT safe has to be an absolute cesspool/warzone.

But you are taking the murder rate for an entire country and comparing it to a city. If you take the Mayan Rivera numbers then I am sure it would appear much safer.

While it looks nice.. it is old, run down and the food was garbage. Stay at the Hilton instead, or the Zoetry if you want to hob-nob with celebrities.
