No problem, I aim to please. I have also only been to Mexico once but I am clearly an expert.

I've been to Mexico a few times, but it has just been...meh.

Last time I went we visited Chichenitza (sp?) and it was incredible. But the experience for me was ruined because there were five thousand people trying to sell me the same pre-fabricated lead based trinkets the entire time. I literally could not walk 5 feet without someone asking me to buy something. Completely ruined the experience for me.

No thanks. I will go to Jamaica, Cuba, DR, Costa Rica, and pretty much any other Caribbean country before I go back to Mexico.

I have been to Mexico twice- Was just a little nino at the time, but remember everything being decent enough. Hell, mama even put my two sisters alone in a cab (mid teens at the time) to take them back to the hotel. My avoidance of the country is more about not wanting to go back somewhere I have already been. My favorite trip to that general region of the world was Venezuela and Trinidad and Tobago, which aren't exactly the safest destinations for tourists either.

I think it really depends on what you want in your travel.

If all you want is to get #####faced on a beach, people are better off not going to Mexico. Resort Mexico kind of sucks, but not just because Mexico has its drug issues and its "dangerous", but because of the people it attracts and caters to. It is the cheapest of the Caribbean resort destinations because of the sheer amount there are, and its starting to show, even in the 5 star places. I've been three times, and I don't really have plans on going back in the forseeable future, but that's also because I have so many other places on the list I need to see before considering going back.

However, to say cheap booze vacations are the only reason to go is not fair. Last time I was there, I went to Tulum, Xel-Ha, and Chichen Itza. All three were absolutely amazing, and absolutely unique.

If you can afford to spend more, there are way better destinations, but I think everyone should see the Mayan Riviera once in their lives, and that means more than hitting up Carlos and Charlie's and Senor Frogs in Cancun.

Really? When I went to Chichen Itza they had all the vendors at the front. When we were walking around the pyramids/structures there were not any vendors.

Ah yes, because this is clearly not the case at pretty much every single large tourist destination on the globe.

Tulum was great also.

Carlos and Charlie's was awesome, such an entertaining meal, haha.

Then we must have been there on a day where they were allowed.

Every single pathway was lined with them, it was like running a gauntlet for 4 hours.

"Senor, cheaper than Walmart, best price for you....." Bugger off.

Don't get me wrong, the history side of the trip was amazing, and I loved being able to see the ruins. Just having to fend off the vendors for hours in 40 degree weather was one of the most annoying things I've ever had to do.

So have I, but I have never had to deal with it as in my face as I did in Mexico.

Looks like I will get a even better deal on my next trip as so many of you will never return, rates are sure to go lower.
I had a blast when I went and had no issues ON the resort...for those who are bothered by people trying to sell you things...you need to find a resort with a private beach that only guests can be on.

Travel to the "real" Mexico would be fascinating - ex. Mexico City, Oaxaca, Guadalajara. I just don't know how safe it is right now.

Now that I think about it, the only serious violence/trouble I have ever seen in all my travels was in the States in San Francisco- guy was shot in the stomach about 20 meters from where my wife and I were waiting for the cable car (near fisherman's wharf). Ive never experienced any real issues in the countries that are theoretically much more dangerous for travellers.

With how affordable Hawaii is now, I see absolutely no reason to go to Mexico.

Anyway, this thread is about a woman that got her face beat in, at an extremely safe, Mexican resort, where things like this never happen, and tourists never get raped and killed, and where the resorts never just blow up when you are eating breakfast. Mexico is a wonderful serene place. Really like a modern day Garden of Eden or Utopia.

So I will keep my travel preferences to myself. I hope she recovers.

I was just there last week, and although the vendors are mostly along the pathways between the ruins (likely wanting to stay in the shade), there were a few walking around trying to sell stuff.

What's weird was that I also went to the ruins at Coba, and there were no vendors once you passed the front gate, so there are obviously different rules for the different locations.

I don't know if it's any worse than what you get at the sites in Italy.

I agree Mr. Remington.

Canada is just like Mexico. Selective statistics can prove any point you want to make.

57 murders in Edmonton per year, cool.

50 murders in Mexico a day, selective statistics at its finest.
