if i remember correctly we traded down from 20 to 23 the year we drafted him..Kinda wish we would have taken shroeder now, but hindsight is 20/20 i guess. I think this is going to hurt us with our current talent pool but i dont see this hurting the way people look at our franchise. It is true that in the past we have signed big ticket free agents instead of giving chances to some of the kids on the farm but i believe uncle fester when he says we will see more of that.

Schroeder is an midget scorer who had a terrible AHL season.
Kyle Clifford would've been the guy who plays typical in your face type of game that the Flames would've drafted. Hindsight is 20/20

Umm... no. You're missing the point. The Flames had the power to NOT ALLOW Erixon to dictate the terms. The Flames could have just let Erixon re-enter the draft or trade Erixon to another team (presumably for a lesser return). Either of those scenarios would have made it much harder for Erixon to become a Ranger and either of those scenarios would not have made Erixon and his father happy men.

I think you got it completely wrong. Had Erixon signed with the Flames right after he was drafted, the number of ELC years left would have been extended twice since Erixon didn't play at least 10 NHL games last season and didn't do so this season. Erixon would still have 3 years remaining on his ELC in that scenario.

So the Flames should have cut off the nose to spite the face? Seems like a brilliant plan.
However I do agree Erixon should have been signed way sooner and if he refused his rights should have been traded right there.

I have not read 38 pages of this thread but from my perspective:
I am pissed and disappointed he didn't want to sign BUT I am glad we got more than the compensatory 2nd round pick. It's not the ideal situation but what more could have been done? The fact Feaster and Conroy went to NY to try and reason with Erixon says a lot. Take the prospect and the picks and move on.

In that case, I guess your point is the Flames should have cut off their nose to spite their face? Sure, they could have dictated what happened as per your plan. However, they would have come out with less than what they got now. I'm not sure, I don't think it's worth it losing on the deal to make a point.

I'm not sure either. That's why I said that I don't blame Feaster for taking the best offer but that part of me that wished Feaster didn't trade Erixon to the NYR. If it sets a bad precedence, it may be worth it to lose the deal to make a point. That's how it goes sometimes.

From what Watt said, he was only the tip of the ice berg of disenchanted farm players. Feaster even acknowledged it in his negotiations and when he first took over, saying that things would change under him but the agent said he didn't have enough of a record to show this would be true.
among the reasons Darryl was fired, this is often over looked.
I agree Erixon was just using these reasons as a delaying tactic not to sign as they wouldn't pertain to him, but the reasons were still valid for other players.

“He’s just a very enthusiastic kid and he’s always excited, no matter what,” said Ryan Howse, who’d skated on a line with Horak with the Western Hockey League’s Chilliwack Bruins and — thanks to Wednesday’s trade — will turn pro with his chum this coming winter.
“It’s pretty neat. I talked to him (Thursday), with a little email, and he’s pretty excited to come. He can’t wait. He really enjoyed Canada, he really enjoyed the people here. He’s been to a Flames game — we went as a team last year — so he got to see that. And, obviously, with Chilliwack being close to Abbotsford (home of the Flames’ farm team), he got to see a lot of Abbotsford games.”

Quote:
“We spent two years watching each other develop,” said Howse. “Now, turning pro together, it’s special to him and to me as well. I’m excited to have someone close to me, play with me.
“He’s a great guy and an even better hockey player.”

At least Horak sounds like a good kid.

Howse, a sharp-shooting right-winger, and Horak, a soft-passing left-winger, worked together for two seasons.

And the other was mad because the Flames accurately assessed that he was only an ECHL calibre player.

Pelech played 5 games for the Flames in total.
I have no idea if Mikkelson and Carson played their way on the Ducks/Canes roster or were "handed" the spot. But either way, seems to me Ducks/Canes were willing to stick with them and both players got a fair look instead of being sent down after their first turnover (I am wildly guessing here neither Mikkelson and Carson played Norris caliber hockey and they made fair shares of mistakes but alas both lasted 50+ games while guys like Pelech, Brodie or Ramholt last anywhere from several games to several shifts).
|
To be fair Pelech has pretty much been a walking injury since his cup of coffee a couple of years ago. I don't think he has made it through a season healthy and that's a big part of why he hasn't progressed or been called up again.

Yep.....and some of the injuries weren't just your average every day type of stuff. I think he had one that was not only career threatening, but even life threatening. Some kind of clot in his arm or something?
