I'm not trying to do that.
As I've said many times, I myself am a pretty avid gun owner.
That's also why I said SOME areas.
You can't deny that in say several southern states the hard drinking, drunk driving, hillbilles aren't also firmly on the "From my cold dead hands" side of this argument.
Again it's not something that's particularily relevant, and it is a bit of a cheap shot, but there is certainly some truth to it.

The anecdotal evidence is old and pointless.
What if the Columbine kids didn't have guns? Virginia Tech? Dunblane Massacre? University of Texas? I can do it to, but it's a waste of time.

So quick to go away when someone brings up something that has nothing to do with the topic at hand?

Not really...it was dropped...by a person. The gun didnt walk into the backpack by itself, jump out and discharge by itself, nor load itself before any of these things.

She could have used the money spent on a gun to put in a steel door in her bedroom, an Ipod cued to play shotgun-being-loaded.mp3 and have a direct line to the police station.
That would be more effective and more reliable deterring a random stabbing then a gun would.
And in that scenario there are not hundreds of accidental deaths per year, and when the robbers steal your door it doesn't really help them.

She shouldnt have to do any of that stuff.
Someone breaks into her home, she should be able to defend herself as she wishes.
Really a steel bedroom door and an ipod playing a shotgun being loaded..

Here's a question: what if you are out on a bear hunting trip. You sleep in a camper and you have seen what is left of a camper after a bear has torn through it in the past. Is it alright to sleep with a firearm in this instance?

I think that, in general, becaue so many Canadians are not exposed to guns in their life, they are afraid of them. Rightfully so i might add when you see what we see on TV etc.
I was no different. Hated guns completely until i was introduced to them down here by responsible owners who are my friends. Beleive me for a few years sitting at the old watering hole, this debate came up many a time and I was on the "all guns are bad" side of things.
The truth is, guns are not inherently bad things...they just arent. It's why i will say repeatedly that guns dont kill people, because they dont. they are USED to kill people like a myriad of other weapons. Are they more lethal than many weapons? Of course, but that only happens when they are in the wrong hands.
When i went out shooting the first couple times, i quickly gained a whole new level of respect for them. Its why responsible gun owners are so against regulations that would have them unable to keep them. As has been said...if the bad guys have em, you wanna have em. I will never own one myself as it just isnt that important to me, but for those that do want them, I have no problem with it. I have a very good friend here who has a carry and canceal permit...and I dont think twice about it when I am with him as I know he isnt gonna go crazy with it.
There really are two sides to this debate, unfortunately a lot of it is lost in the rhetoric from both sides, but the bottom line is that firearms are very mucha part of the USA culture and that aint changing anytime soon.

There is truth to that argument.
Why not take it one step further?
Maybe it is the fault of the elements in the gun for being able to generate such force? Maybe gunpowder is at fault because the five year old never would to have been throw the steel fast enough?
Those arguments have some small semblance of truth, but they ignore the glaringly obvious;
guns are so predictably dangerous and unstable that you are arguing that injuries are expected because it was dropped.

I'm not afraid of guns (unless it's being pointed at me, of course) and infact I think they're quite interesting. I just don't feel the need to own one, and if I did buy one it would be for target shooting and not for protection because I don't feel threatened enough in my everyday life to stand behind a gun.
I'm all for responsible ownership, and don't feel they should be outright banned. What I'm against is keeping them in places such as under the bed, in drawers on night stands or anywhere outside of a locked safe. As well as stronger regulations.
Unfortunately, I think irresponsible gun ownership is on the rise. This would be due to the population growing and of how easy it is to get a gun, among other things.
It's instances like this news story that are what alarm me. Proper gun ownership and this wouldn't have happened. A small mistake with a firearm can lead to disastrous consequences.

Just so you guys all know, the percentage of firearms related deaths are about 60% suicide, 30% homicide. (Used to be 80/20 until the gang bangers came)
So if you own a gun in your house... your more likely to to shoot yourself with it, than to be shot by a random person trying to rob or whatever....

This has got to be one of the most overused phrases ever, yet I don't fully understand the point of it.
Yah, in the end, it's the person pulling the trigger who killed the other person. But guess what? Having access to that loaded weapon allowed for the person to easily kill the other person. Oftentimes, it's not even the intent of the gun carrier. It probably just happened because adrenaline affected rational thought. You can't argue that having a gun increases the likelyhood of death, whether intentional or not.
