Yeah, I was thinking that it would pop up a 15 second non-advance-able video or something.

so far it doesn't sound like it will.
From a developer standpoint this could be interesting. If apple is doing the hosting/client gathering for you it could be a useful service. if the ads are overly intrusive though it won't work.
Can you imagine what it would cost a company to get into this ad pool though?
My gut reaction to this was very negative ... but IF they work the way they are being demo'd I don't have a problem with them. They really are like mini apps ... not a bad approach.

Which is good for app developers, rather than negotiating their own deals for ads or dealing with dozens of different APIs and companies and stuff, they can just use the built in stuff and probably get higher end and more profitable ads to maybe.

Having the ads location aware is pretty neat, I used to work on stuff like that.

I was thinking there isn't a reason to jailbreak anymore, but if the ads are really annoying, might have to jailbreak. I'm sure someone will come up with a way to disable them.

at leasts ads will be somewhat useful this way, and not purely annoying.

... and there's the rub. I was very curious to see how something like that would work on a 3g. The horsepower is just not quite there.

You could go ahead and hire your own ad sales team and try to sell your space yourself. For 99.99% of people interested in monetizing through ad sales, that would be impossible.
At least Apple has the balls to tell you what their cut is. I don't know of anyone else that tells you, certainly not Google.

If they can fix the speed issues ver3.0 brought to the 3g, I will be fine with no multitasking.
Plus, how many people who are really concerned with multitasking will still be using an 3g this summer, as by then they will be 2 years old.

And almost every 3g owner will have, at least, 1 year remaining on their contract!

Yeah the carriers will let people upgrade at that point.
Hm.. 3G becomes "obsolete" with an OS release that won't run fully on it, and a new phone comes out, all about the same time that people are getting to the point they can do new hardware upgrades and extend their contracts or get new contracts.
What are the chances!

I think they usually have programs though for people 2 years into their contract to do a hardware upgrade and sign a new 3 year contract.

Well, lots of people love to wax poetic about how much better open systems are and Apple comes right out and says 60/40 and it's a 'cash grab'. Adsense is the most closed black box there is and forget about trying to get help or ask a question of them...

Q: Why have you veered away from widgets on the iPad?
A: We just shipped it on Saturday. And then we rested on Sunday.

Nice.
I have no problem with the 3G phones not being supported. Just because a new version of the OS has come out doesnt automatically make your phone obsolete.

I seem to remember several people on this board were able to upgrade to the 3GS after only 1 year with their 3g.
I plan to move to the new iPhone this summer and relegate my 3g to my spouses use.
