Some of the rumored new stuff...

- Multitasking.
- UI refresh.
- New gestures.
- Space unicorns.
- Gnome tears.

Yeah right, it took YEARS to get copy/paste, no way we're getting space unicorns (even though netbooks have had space unicorns for forever).

Well that came out of nowhere. I'm used to a month-long build up for these events. Incredibly excited for this announcement as it should have implications for the iPad as well.

The major roadblock with the Space Unicorn project was getting the Gnomes to cry the right type of tears.

Wait... the iPhone still doesn't have multitasking?

Nope. No multitasking in the two weeks since you last mentioned that in a thread here. I know, I know... you'd think this kind of thing would just appear over night.

It's not Apple's fault the blasted Gnomes kept screwing up the Unicorn side of things.

Following the trends of past years this is pretty much expected.

I'm really hoping for a performance boost, but I think I'll be disappointed. Also hoping for a little more information on the next generation of iPhone.

I think they started talking about 3.0 beta around this time last year. Looks like WWDC will have a best 4.0 beta award category. I wonder if I'll be able to win that one too?

They need to refresh the phone itself too...3GS doesn't count. No other cell phone company in the world would even imagine going more than two years without a cosmetic refresh...Apple better pony up.

What is all this talk of tears and unicorns?

Expect to see that in June around WWDC. The phone lifecycle has gone through a refresh about once a year and there are rumors of a new phone to be released around that time, just like the 3GS. However, the 3GS is really just a more powerful 3G with some other stuff tacked on.

At minimum the new iPhone needs a new screen. AMOLED is a given otherwise the iPhone is going to lose some ground.

Did I already ask this 2 weeks ago? Honest question - I sometimes ask these things in passing and forget that I already got the answer to it.
I was honestly under the impression multi-tasking was added in the last generation/update and was actually surprised that this is a feature they're adding now. Obviously, I'm not on the bleeding edge of every tidbit of Apple related news.

So is this something that I will download like an update to Itunes?
I already have an Iphone, but I'm under contract with it so if it is something new that I will have to buy I'm definitely going to miss out on this.

^^yes, just a download and install, not a new device, although I must imagine a new iphone can't be too far off at this point.

What is the chance this update will work on the first generation iPhone? The hardware is already sluggish with 3.0. If 4.0 is a big step it will murder my phone.

The good news is that 4.0 will release with new hardware, so you'll have the choice of buying the new model, or buying a used 3GS from someone else who is upgrading.

3.0 came out at the end of June - early July I think.

In the hardware department, it seems like Apple needs to do something to really blow away the growing competition. Will it really be enough to just catch up to the Droid and Nexus One on screen resolution, multitasking, etc? It doesn't seem like Apple has done anything revolutionary with the iPhone since the App Store; all their updates have been more evolutionary.

Built-in pico-projector anyone?
