I could honestly go on and on about this, but I won't...I don't think that people with special needs should be banned from anything.

So what would you guys do if a crying baby was in the theatre? They wouldn't get kicked out of the theatre or asked to not come back again, would they?
I think you misread my post...I said they should NOT be banned lol.

But with your screaming baby example, I think 99% of parents would leave with their kid. I think the appropriate thing in this situation would have been for the helper to leave as well.

The "thanks" button doesn't work from my iPhone but thanks for this. What a great way to look at it.

This was once a good thread.

I did misread your post, sorry about that. So yeah they shouldnt be banned. BUT if the person couldn't control the noises they are making, then them leaving own is almost the same thing as being banned because it means they can't really come to the theatre since the noises will occur. It's just a difference of voluntarily or involuntarily leaving, but with the same conclusion. And why should they not be allowed to enjoy something because they make noises they can't control? It's not their fault they are making noises...

I have 5 and 6 year old children that talk to themselves or sing to themselves because of various disabilities. Should we keep them away from the school assemblies that the "regular" children get to go to? We have pretty cool assemblies by the way...they are outside (YAY living in California) and the last one, farm animals came to school and kids got to learn about them. So should these autistic kids be deprived of an experience because they involuntarily sing really loud or talk really loud where the other elementary kids cant hear what the announcers are telling them?????

Should we deprive others of an experience? Well I guess they are depriving you of a quiet movie experience but you are depriving them (if you complain and they get kicked out) of going to the movies. So it works both ways.

You really just don't get it. It doesn't even matter what word you use, because you go out of your way to push people's buttons and act like a guy who doesn't give a fu** and is trying to go out of their way to tick people off. That's the offensive part, it's your attitude. You're the one who makes whatever word offensive because it gets associated with attitudes like yours.

If the offensive word is the egg, you're the chicken who lays it.

I agree with you. I used to work with children with Autism and one big part of the job was getting them involved in activities such as going to movies, plays etc. Sometimes it would work and sometimes it would not. The goal was always to see if we could stay a little bit longer every time. The point is however that when things got to be a little too much (much like somebody with a disruptive kid) we would leave.

If I was the aid of the handicapped person I'd probably position myself somewhere in the theatre where it would be least distracting or an easy escape should one be needed.

I also would like to show appreciation for how you handled it. Many people could have reacted in a negative way in front of their children which wouldn't have benefited anybody.

No offence to anyone in this thread but if you guys think that my online persona is a definitive representation of me or that I actually care that anyone "thinks" I'm a jerk is going to be sorely disappointed. (I put thinks in quotations because some random comments on the internet are hardly enough to be able to label my entire life)

Of the CPers I've met I'm sure they could vouch for the fact I'm a decent enough guy (if they even know me well enough).

If anyone thinks that their comments towards me have caused me to rethink my life, have offended me or have me caring at all whatsoever...

(cue the "well you aren't heeding our advice because you're an ogre" posts)

Let what go? I haven't been on CP since last night and there are about 20 responses to my posts. Most of them negative.

I'm trying to get others to let it go by making it clear that them worrying about it and posting about it isn't going to effect me.

I usually consider Riders fans to be mentally challenged, I don't complain when I have to put up with them at McMahon, even though they're incredibly annoying and require quadruple police, starting fights etc.

What was my original ######y position?

If I've been following this thread correctly, the main beef with my position wasn't with how I treat the disabled but how I refer to them.

From what I've read, no one has said that my treatment of disabled people is off base, only that I use derogatory terms to refer to them.

The crux of my counter-argument was actually that regardless of what I call them, all that matters is how I treat them. Flames Gimp and RougeUnderoos managed to sway my view of this and as such I changed my terminology, so as not to offend anyone.
