Dude how are you still not getting this?

Seriously, look up CONTEXT on the internet and read about it.

If a stranger calls me an ahole, the CONTEXT is probably pretty rude and I'll be offended.

If my buddy calls me an ahole I won't care because of the CONTEXT. ie he's my friend and I know he's not really putting me down.

Call me insensitive all you want because I used words you find offensive but seriously you need to learn what context means. Based on how you are acting in this thread I think you really need to figure it out because the context in which things in life happen makes a HUGE deal in day to day life.

I can grasp your argument, it's not illegitimate, but the way you've presented it here makes it pretty much impossible for any point you have to be heard over the ######ness. Compare the way you've presented your issue to the way the OP presented theirs and the associated responses. I think you'll notice a pretty apparent difference in both.
Ok. Thanks for the input. I don't know if you noticed by my first post (although filled with horrible words like ###### and cripple) was in complete agreement with HP's post right? I guess using offensive words is worse than being a generally nice guy to those who are less fortunate. Next time I'll be sure to be polite to the disabled man as I cut him off on the sidewalk and tell him to shut the hell up during the movie.

I've always believed the best way to fight ignorance and miseducation is by acting twice as intolerant to really teach them a lesson. Being compassionate and understanding and trying to change views through not being an ahole is so last millennium. (what I'm trying to say is that if you think I'm a miseducated, ignorant ahole you aren't doing yourself any favours by out aholing me, all you're doing is bringing yourself down to my level.)

hahah true, true. be that as it may, I would still spit in the face of any man, women or child that ever called me a cripple, gimp. etc etc. unless of course they are friends or family(or a prostitute paid to humiliate me and step on my balls)

Special
Mentally challenged
handicapped
crippled
handicappable
uniquely abled
Exceptional
Mentally ill
mental ######ation
developmentally disabled
mental handicap

That isn't even all of them I just got tired of searching.

Now quote my post and go through term by term and tell me which ones are appropriate.

I guarantee some of the ones you find offensive aren't, and some of the ones you don't find offensive are.

INteresting. You guys seem to be experts on what is and isn't offensive but the American Association of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities say:

They do say that part of the reason they changed their name is because the terms they use now are "less offensive" but that is only one reason among 4 or 5. And they frequently stress that the reason they changed it was not because of it being offensive but because they wanted to stress that:

So it seems the primary reason for the change is because the view of the disability has changed and they thought mental ######ation sounded too permanent while Intellectual/Developmental Disability is less strict in its definition.
It seems to me that you find yourself in an awful lot of situations that call for you to describe the condition of someone with a disability.

I mean does it really come up in your life that often that it's actually a problem for you to not call certain people cripples or ######s?

Here, a question... say you want to get on an elevator but you can't, because there's a guy in a wheelchair on there and he's taking up some space. You have to wait for the next elevator. Now on the off-chance someone says "you should have been here 30 seconds ago, what happened"?

A) there was a cripple in a wheelchair on the elevator, so I had to wait for the next one

B) there was a ###### in a wheelchair on the elevator, so I had to wait for the next one

C) there was a guy in a wheelchair on the elevator, so I had to wait for the next one

D) there was a differently-abled guy in a wheelchair on the elevator, so I had to wait for the next one

Me, I'd normally go with C. It's a guy in a wheelchair. There's no reason to make up some term to designate his mental or physical health. And there's certainly no reason to gripe about "political correctness" stopping you from making that kind of judgement.

Since you are in a situation that I'll never know about (you are in a wheelchair) I generally apologize if you found me calling disabled people "cripples".

I really don't mean it to be rude and I hope the explanations given for why I speak the way I do, help you to realize that my poor vocabulary (well, you guys don't seem to like it anyway, I don't mind it) is in no way indicative of me being intolerant of those who are disabled.

If you say that me saying cripple is offensive to you then I'll not use it around you out of consideration. However, I don't find the word particularly offensive so I'm going to keep thinking it even when I say disabled.

Seriously, I'm a nice person. I just don't get why certain words I say are offensive without the context even being considered. Makes me think some people are intolerant of my condition...

It sounds to me like you don't really care if the words are misconstrued to hurt and that displays a great deal of willfull ignorance and callousness. Willfull ignorance is just as offensive as directed offense because it shows the person chooses not to care about the ramifications of their actions and rather chooses to put themselves first before anyone else.

I hope it is ok that I laughed at this post.

Funny I think you pointed out my tolerance of others because all answers but C sounded stupid to me. It is the only one that doesn't sound like I'm going out of my way to point out that the guy in the elevator was "differently abled".

To be fair, except on the internet I rarely ever have reason to talk about disabled people.

I care. End of story. Sounds to you like nothing. Stop making random judgements about what I care about or don't.

I'm sure everyone in the world has used a word in a non-offensive way that another human being has at one time used as an offensive word.

If I avoided ALL words that COULD be misconstrued by others and used offensively by others I'd never talk.

As it is I don't use these words rudely or offensively nor do I misconstrue them to be offensive so your whole post is irrelevant.

Personally, I commend you on doing exactly what IMO was the best thing to do in the situation. Hopefully, your kids come away having learned something about being tolerant and understanding of others, and that's a much bigger win that sitting through a two hour movie uninterrupted.

How is it a random judgment when it's based upon what you've been saying?

I don't care if you use the words. and honestly I'd rather just be a person instead of some stupid label.

Well then I'd at least appreciate if you stopped using offensive words to describe my condition.

I'm not a tool or an ahole, I'm what's called "culturally insensitive". Me and the rest of my people find words like ahole and tool to be quite offensive and ignorant.

I would choose option "B".
Mods should make this a poll.

Maybe not, but you've proven yourself to be quite fond of acting like one over and over again.

I currently work with Special Ed kindergarden-1st grade children...I am going to be a SDC (Special Day Class) Kindergarden teacher in about a year. Anyway, it is so hard for special needs children (and adults) and their families to feel "normal" so they should be able to do everything the rest of society can.

I could honestly go on and on about this, but I won't...I don't think that people with special needs should be banned from anything.

So what would you guys do if a crying baby was in the theatre? They wouldn't get kicked out of the theatre or asked to not come back again, would they?

I'm just telling you how it sounds. It's not exactly random considering the things you've saying in this thread.

So we should just give up and never try to be non-offensive? What a load of self serving crap.

I took your post to mean that others could misconstrue your use of some words and draw offense from them. See how easy it is to misconstrue the meaning behind something said?
