Paris Jackson knew Michael as her father not some celebrity. She also knew that he had a massive amount of followers because he was a musician and I am sure she has seen him perform in front of thousands and thousands of fans (maybe Live and on TV) so the crowd at the Staples Center was almost expected in her mind. Keeping that in mind I don't think she would need any courage to speak in front of that crowd and that too to say how much she loved her father.

About her getting pushed into making that speech, I would have believed that if one of the Jackson brothers or any member of the family would have handed over a speech to her and asked her to cry at the exact moment when she says "He was the best father.." to look cute on TV.

I don't know a single 11 year old that would have the confidence to do that on their own... without someone talking them into it.

I'm sure it was tough for her as well but perhaps she has a fortitude to do what so many of the people you know don't have. it's not out of the realm of possibility. I will give no opinion of MJ here but one of my biggest pet peeves is the so many people assume something can or can't happen based on their own limitations.

Nowhere in my post did I say that the abuse he was subject to was any justification or "free pass" for anything he may have done. As a child of abuse myself, I would never try to claim "I was abused" as a defense for anything I've done in my life. What I've done, I've done. Not my father. Not his "pals". Just me. I only have myself to blame.

The same goes for MJ, if he did what was he was accused of then he did it all on his own, his abuse is no excuse. Me personally, I just didn't see a predator when that whole thing was in the media. Perhaps I am reflecting my own experiences on what I saw with his case. Maybe I didn't see the things that usually set off my "abuser radar" with the coverage we were privy to. I just wasn't convinced.
But whatever really happened none of us will ever know. You won't change your mind and neither will I, but this situation can hardly be compared to the Pickton case.

I was thinking that as well. California has been one of the hardest hit by this recession, this funeral should be paid for by the Jackson's and/or the plethora of stars attening. Kobe Bryant could peel off 4 million like it was pocket change if he wanted too.

If the state of California is footing the bill for MJ's memorial service and if I was a resident of the state of California, I would be one pissed off taxpayer.

What costs are we talking here? If you are talking about the stage setup and garbage clean-up, that's all covered by AEG.

The $4M was for increased police presence and other public servants providing the duties that they are supposed to provide. And that is being covered by the city of Los Angeles. However, they are asking for donations... from the Jackson family, from AEG, from other corporate sponsors AND the public. They are hoping that donations cover the $4M the same way that the Lakers celebration was covered by donations.

However, some economists say that the city shouldn't be asking for donations given that (a) the public servants including police officers were providing the service that they are hired by the public to do... is the public supposed to pay twice? and (b) the city is going to get its money back. There were so many people drawn into L.A. by the event, all renting hotel rooms, renting cars, going to restaurants... and according to the L.A. Economic Development Corp., the increased tax revenues from the event balance out the costs.
