Absolutely many of us saw Gaudreau and Tkachuk coming years before it happened as it was as obvious then as it is today that Draisaitl and McDavid will both likely bolt Edmonton in three years. However it's very likely he was handcuffed by the owner who you apparently can't mention the word "rebuild" around which makes it really difficult to get futures on a return for your best forwards. He wasn't perfect and maybe change is a good thing but it's hard to feel great today about where the organization is. Maybe there's some announcements in the coming weeks/months that will take the sting away but it's not cool that players and even GM's are jumping off the Flames bus.

I think people tend to associate Conroy with his happy gabby radio personality. Which really is kind of dated.
We do know he interviewed but wasn’t chosen for a couple GM jobs. FWIW.

This is truth.

People don't like change, but sometimes it's for the best.
Maybe the next guy is more future focused and comes up with a clear plan to capitalize on our next franchise player (Wolf), and can get us to the next level (rather that alternating in/out seasons).
Treliving did some great things, especially early on in his rebuild. He kind of painted himself into a corner later on, but in part to no fault of his own (players leaving). I think he did pretty well as far as the hand he was dealt.
His glaring weakness was free agency. Neal and now Kadri hurt the club. Again, at the time those players were sought after, so what are you going to do? Hindsight is 20/20. But desperation moves have handcuffed the team for a while unless they tear down the old core and sell. A new GM won't be sentimental about those players and is more likely to pull the trigger on those moves, so this could be good for us who want a change of philosophy.

Yes in this case, how could it not be?

I just want the next GM and coach to focus more on youth, skill, and speed.
My biggest critique of Treliving is a lot of the guys he brought in (Neal, Brouwer, Toffoli, Huberdeau, Lucic, etc) weren't the most fleet of foot.
This team needs to get younger and faster.

I am not sure this is as ground breaking as folks are making out to be. There are only 6 GMs who have been with the same team as long as BT has been with the Flames.
Calgary Flames Brad Treliving April 28, 2014
made playoffs 5/9 (made second round)
Columbus Blue Jackets Jarmo Kekalainen February 13, 2013
made playoffs 5/10 (made second round)
Dallas Stars Jim Nill April 29, 2013
made playoffs 6/10 (made finals once)
St. Louis Blues Doug Armstrong July 1, 2010
made playoffs 10/13 (Won the Stanely Cup)
Washington Capitals Brian MacLellan May 26, 2014
made playoffs 8/9 (Won the Stanely Cup)
Winnipeg Jets Kevin Cheveldayoff June 8, 2011
made playoffs 6/12 (made conference finals)
Nashville Predators David Poile July 9, 1997*
madeplayoffs 15/24 (made finals once)
*retiring after this season.

Can anyone give anything positive about Maloney? I sure haven’t seen anything. These seem like dark days ahead

It was time for a new vision. The same people screaming about how we needed change are the same ones saying "what a horrible day" etc.
I strongly believe Sutter won't be back. I don't think anyone can look at what happened this year and keep him.

Brad chose to leave. This team is a dumpster fire and he is getting out when he can. Its an impossible team to recruit players to, and combine that with the meddling owners?
They will probably keep Sutter to make it look like this was their choice. But, its not.

Just watching the press conference. My thoughts on this specifically:
- Why does Maloney look like he's aged enormously over the last 2 years? He looks much less... vital... than he previously has.
- Also, why is he acting like Reek while John is his Ramsay Bolton? He keeps looking over at him but won't make eye contact. He's pretty much checking in with him after every statement he makes. He mentioned emotions about Brad earlier, and yeah, maybe, but it seems much more back of hand than that.
- Bean comes right out and says "I am never allowed to say that word" re: rebuilds.

Yes, the Neal signing had fallout. But I doubt he would have (or any GM would have) offered Tkachuk more than 7 per year at the time.
|
It's the GM's job to ensure he doesn't lose his best asset for nothing. He failed to do that.
Regarding Tkachuk, Ottawa signed his brother for 8 years at $8.2 mil/yr with less impressive stats. They signed Stutzle to 8 years at 8.3mil/yr with similar stats. It happens. Both of those look great now.
Treliving's results were not good over the course of 9 years. I'm surprised people are romanticizing his tenure like this.

This context makes it seem plausible that Tre living was dealing with the fatigue of the job.

I did a review of Maloney's track record back when he joined the Flames in 2017. But CapFriendly has a much more exhaustive record for him:

Maloney on fan saying that he will not take the long term gm position, is looking for a progressive gm not just a retread and that Conroy and pascal will both be interviewed. There is no urgency. Todd button still controls the draft (thank god).

In the summer you bashed the players for leaving, now its Trelivings fault?
Both guys said they wanted to come back and got offered top dollar and both decided to leave and take less money.
One ended up in Columbus he had no plan.
Not sure about Johnny, but Tkachuk for sure having Sutter here played a role.
