Holy sheeeeet!!!

You guys are absolutely going to love Huberdeau so much. You won't miss Johnny at all I think Huberdeau is one of the absolute best players in the game.

PLUS!!!

We got Weegar is is a solid top 4 d-man with offensive skill.

PLUS!!!!!

We get another 1st round pick

PLUS!!!!!!

I get to still cheer on Tkachuck in Florida!!!!!

Oh my god. This seems too good to be true. The only hiccup is that Huberdeau needs a new contract soon, but that's a problem for another day.

An absolute homerun of a trade. Well done Tre.

Any thoughts on contract cost for each?

Huberdeau around what was offered to Gaudreau? Something between 9.5-10.5M per year, 7-8 years

Weegar to me looks like he'd come in around 6.5M per year, using Hampus Lindholm, Faulk as comparable players. Maybe more if using Spurgeon at 7.575M.

Then like others have said, something has to give in the back end. This puts pressure on the Kylington negotiation as he is not guaranteed top 4 any more, outside of a Hanifin trade, which if the goal is Weegar, Andersson, Kylington as the 3 to build around long term maybe you move now to avoid losing him cheap.
Or if you keep them all in for now, maybe you move Valimaki to get an upgrade up front?

Interesting options coming up for the team

Everybody seems to be saying that Huberdeau and Pierre Luc Dubois want to be in Montreal on their next contracts. Who knows if Huberdeau will stay if we throw enough money at him, maybe if we can make another large splash with the extra cap space we have now?

If anything, I anticipate if either Huberdeau or Weegar indicate they will not re-sign (and I think Treliving has learned this is the game he needs to play now), we will flip either for another 1st/picks, etc.

This is a grade A great trade for the Flames
I think Sutter overplayed him during the season, especially after we had qualified for the playoffs. Should have given him a rest and bought him in for the last game before the playoffs started. He was knackered after the first series against Dallas.

Then he needs to do it before the season starts because he and the owners will not do it if we have a sniff of making it to the playoffs. Seen it too many times now!

Huberdeau is 29 so if 7 years is be on the table 9+ will be called for I would think. Last 4 years he's scored 386 pts in 286 games very consistent and misses very few games. He may not be career pt. a game however the past four years he's been a 1.2 pt. per game first line forward by any measure.

Weeger shoots right so you have Andersson, Tanev and Weeger on that side.
Hanafin, Zadorov and Kjillington as lefties with MacKay as the best bet along with Meloche as next up to bat?

If they don't ultimately trade a D thats a really solid starting 6 defense and some depth.

Still astounded Treliving pulled this rabbit out of a hat.

Time to move on from Valimaki he has had plenty of chances and not shown nearly enough. Get what you can for him and maybe it will give him a chance of a fresh start. I think we will regret it immensely if we move Kylington he made huge steps last year and can only get better.

Huberdeau is a fine replacement, but finding a top RW to ease pressure off Huberdeau is imperative, otherwise, teams will just double team him and the top line will be as easy to defend as it was back a couple years ago.
No player gets double teamed, as it leaves a player perpetually open.

been a few hours and I still can't wipe the smile off my god damn face. Amazing how a simple hockey trade can lift your mood for a whole day haha

honestly, I couldn't have imagined a bigger homerun trade. Apart from the asset management and cap flexibility, I just love that this trade gives them multiple options going forward. I was on the "tear it down" train, but that was before I realized that Tre could get Huberdeau and Weegar back. Two very fine players that allow Sutter and the remaining core to run it back, and even though a proper rebuild would have been sweet, I can't get mad at this. And the beauty of it is that, even if it doesn't work out, you can still trade Huberdeau and/or Weegar at the deadline for a king's ransom. Remember when Ben Chiarot fetched a 1st, a 4th and a prospect last year? Can you imagine the haul you could get for a Huberdeau or Weegar then? Those are prime trade pieces in case you do want to rebuild after all.

But my sincere hope is that we can re-sign both of them this offseason. Huberdeau is an electric superstar who, in my opinion, should age very well and would fully be deserving of an offer similar to the one we made to Gaudreau. I think quite a few people on here are sleeping on Weegar, but this one excites me a lot. I already really like our blueline, but Weegar probably comes in and is our #1 defenseman right from the get go, which is kind of insane. If you can re-sign him long-term at 6m-ish, you do it. Factor in that both are relatively cheap this season and their new deals would kick in when we get Lucic and Monahan off the books ... it's bloody perfect. Please get it done.

A couple of great futures in there too. Obviously the focus will be on the others in the deal, but Cole Schwindt is a decent prospect and is a nice addition to the prospect pool. Right handed center with good size, solid rookie season in the AHL, first taste of NHL hockey too. I see him on a similar level as Zary maybe? Think he'll be a player for us. The 1st is obviously down the road, but a 1st is a 1st ... and depending on how the next couple of years go, that can be a great trade chip too.

Full marks for Treliving on this. You can criticize the man for a lot of things, but this is a hell of a trade. Especially when you consider that he was close with his back to the wall here ... sure, Tkachuk had given them a list, but it's still a very limited number of options and Tre wasn't exactly dealing from a position of strength here. To come out of this with these 4 assets is absolutely stunning to me. I was one of the more optimistic posters in terms of what we could get for Tkachuk, but I never imagined the return to be this good. This trumps every lopsided homer idea that I could have come up with in my mind.

Finally, I'll echo the thanks to Matthew Tkachuk. He's handled all of this in a very mature way, he gave the Flames a heads up and options to work with. No hard feelings there at all. Thanks for the wonderful years and all the very best to him in Florida!

I'm curious... Can someone with NHL 22 fire it up and try to trade Tkachuk and our 2025 4th for Huberdeau, Weeger, Schwindt and their 2025 1st?

I'd like to know what Florida says to that lol.
