Poor Riley Bruce. He actually had a decent season compared to his draft year.
But still, I went with Kanzig.

Went with Rafikov, if he was in North America he would be a lot higher on this list

The problem I have with Kanzig is he was much bigger than all his peers and probably can't improve much physically (the whole 5 of 7% body fat thing). At the WHL level those are pretty huge advantages and I don't think he stood out much. Each time I have seen him in Penticton the last few years he has struggled. Even if he does make some strides in the right direction, it is getting awfully crowded on the blueline and if he gets a cup of coffee it will probably be with another team through a Granlund type trade.

But he's not, and he may never come over.

That's the whole reason he isn't higher on the list. He has made no effort since being drafted to indicate that he has any interest in coming to play in North America.
Until he does make some effort to show an interest in being a Flame, I don't really even consider him a Flames prospect anymore.

Went with Morrison here. I hope he turns things around and has a good season. It's just such a log jam for D prospects and he could barely play (compete) in the AHL last season but I think he has another gear.

Exactly. Judging him as a player and judging him as a Flames project is the thing to look at here. As a player he's a little higher than a few guys already chosen, but as a prospect, were not going to see him in a Flames Jersey so he's not a good prospect

On the flip side, don't we retain his rights until he's 27? He could blossom into a KHL star, play three-five years there and get bored - and we would still have his rights in his prime.
Most of these other prospects have a two year window, maybe three, to show their stuff.

I agree to an extent that is why I am now only voting for him for the first time. He is still a flames prospect, until he isn't any longer. So " in my opinion" his skill set trumps the fact he has not yet confirmed ever coming to North America or confirmed that he "never" will. I'm ranking him 31 of 37, I still see him better as others left on the list, "others do not" thats ok to me, to each his own.

I remember Rafikov being a really steady presence on the Russian blueline at the WJC's a few years ago.
Does Calgary still have the rights to Rafikov should he actually end up coming over to the NHL? It's been 3 years since he draft year. I thought teams only retain European players rights for 2 years.

The 2013 CBA changed the term for drafted European players from 2 to 4 years.
However, since the NHL doesn't have a transfer agreement with Russia, there is precedent (e.g. Tarasenko and Kuznetsov) that the Flames are not limited to this term with Rafikov.
