Tool hasn't released an album in 13 years, so I'm really interested in hearing where they go with it. Their evolution as a band seemed to plateau around Schism and 10,000 days. Will it be a masterpiece over a decade in the making? Or will it be a complete mess performed by disinterested musicians?
I have no idea if it's going to be a masterpiece (probably not), but that it won't be. It took MJK 15 years to release a new album with A Perfect Circle too and it was really good. Tool won't throw out a half-arsed effort either ;) the two new songs they've played live were good too.

I like Tool but feel they are one of the more overrated bands. Aenima is the only album of theirs I would consider a masterpiece. 10,000 days was a total snoozer of an album IMO.

Overrated in the sense that they're not your cup of tea, or overrated in the sense that they aren't as great as people think they are? What would you consider their biggest deficiencies as a band? I agree 10,000 days wasn't so great and it didn't show any evolution from Schism.

Overrated has just turned into something that people say when they don't like a popular thing.

I say overrated because that's a word that comes up a lot in a Tool discussion to which I tend to agree. I have all their albums (I listen to a lot of music) so it's not that I don't like them but they kind of fall into a zone of bands that I like but don't love. A lot of people talk them up like they are one of the greatest bands ever and to me one great album does not make an all-time great band.

Maybe but I use it in the context of something that's good being praised as great or the best. If I didn't like Tool's music I would simply say that they aren't my cup of tea as there's plenty of music out there I don't like but it doesn't mean it's bad and that it's just something I personally don't care for. I like Tool as I like a lot of bands and I always have a rotation of bands I'm falling in and out of love with but to me the great bands do more than have a brief moment where they were really good. Slipknot for example is another band people either love or like but feel a little overrated and I would argue they have at least more meat in their discography than Tool.

I will still buy this new Tool album BTW and I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised as when a band is on hiatus as long as they have been you never really know what you are going to get when they finally release something new.

That's why a lot of people don't think they're overrated, because they don't think Aenima is their only great album. I think Aenima is the album that mainstream rock media might try to convince people is the quintessential Tool album (and it is a great album). I would argue Lateralus is their true masterpiece. I think among Tool fans you'd probably have a spirited discussion about what their best album is, which is usually a sign of a great band.

I am very excited for the new Tool album but also a little bit worried it won't live up to their catalog after all this time. I thought the last perfect circle album was downright terrible, and a lot of Maynard's stuff with Puscifer never really did anything for me. So I can't just automatically assume I'm going to love the new Tool, but I'm a way bigger fan of them than any of Maynard's side projects.

interesting, I absolutely loved it ... well, at least the first half of the album. Never really cared for the Puscifer stuff either.

as for Tool being "overrated", they've definitely been hyped up by so many people for such a long time that I understand the sentiment. Personally I absolutely loved Lateralus and 10,000 Days, so for me it's not "only one masterpiece". Not even sure if Aenima is my favourite of them.

Tool's music is now on streaming services! So far "ticks & leaches" is #1 on google play, guess it wasn't just one of my personal favorites. Though I don't really know how they do their rankings.

so far album popularity is: Lateralus>Undertow>Opiate(EP)>Aenima>10,000 days

I've long thought that you could argue Tool has 1-3 masterpiece albums, it's a good time to dive into to plunge into the back catalogue and figure it out.

e: Can we at least agree Tool is the best metal to listen to while doing mushrooms?

From personal experience I would argue that Dio is the best. The combination of soaring vocals and high fantasy makes for a perfect mood.

Love it. I was nervous about what I would think given how long its been since they put anything out. But I feel like its how Tool should sound in 2019. Not exactly repeating themselves, but not a complete departure from what they were best at. As a huge fan of Lateralus and their more lengthy, hypnotic and multi-dimensional work, I'm thrilled with it. The song gets better with each listen and I can't wait for the album.

Its interesting, with the combination of time, lofty expectations of a rabid fanbase, and the way the internet is these days -- you just didn't know how this was going to work out for them. But I really think they knocked it out of the park. Most of the commentary I've seen online has been very positive and I don't think its just old Tool fans trying to convince themselves its good. Its legitimately very good.

really like it as well and it's put my mind at ease a bit in terms of the new album. I've always loved Tool and obviously expectations are not exactly low when you wait this long for a new album, so yeah, I'm sure every fan has thought the same: "please don't suck". Liking the first single doesn't necessarily mean a lot but it's obviously not a bad sign.

I'm going to a festival in November and Babymetal are going to be playing. I'd never heard of them before because I'm not huge into metal but excited to see them live. Another metal band that will be playing is Deafheaven. Do you guys like their stuff? I liked the musicianship on their albums but have never been a big fan of screaming singerd. Should be fun to see live though.

I’m not usually a fan of that type of singing either but Deafheaven makes it work. Their album that came out last year was really good.

Frickin new Insomnium!! Man I hope they dont rely too heavily on those non screaming vocals. Generally they use those melodic vocals sparingly throughout their album, I'm concerned a bit they may going a tad too In Flames-y.

Great track posted above but I winced a bit at the immediate usage of signing. Also no intro build up?

As for TOOL being over-rated, I think that's entirely circumstantial as they dont feed you enough material over the years to really chew on, we've waiting 13 years for this, there was always going to be hype and by default from that hype some sentiment of overeating.

Truth is, these guys are the Floyd of our times. Just like you can't pun them to one specific genre, you can't really put them too far down or hype them too far up, they just are what they are, you either love them or straight up hate them, very little gret area in between.

To me they are right up at the tippy top of bands that impacted my life in a good/great way. They'll always have a seat at my musical round table.

They are Iconic of their/our Era.

Also I've been starving for new TOOL for so long now I dont know what it's like to be sated anymore. Feed me TOL now!

You could say the same thing with Tool who also straddles the line. Metal was derived from rock music so there's always going to be some blending of the genres. They aren't heavy metal and have some songs that lean to rock but I would classify the majority of their work as a style of 80's occult or black metal with an infusion of some pop elements in some of their more commercial songs.

TheIronMaiden
09-13-2019, 11:19 AM
They borrow heavily from Metal aesthetic and themes. The sound, so to speak is not metal, but defining a band by genre is inherently flawed. If the band wants to call themselves Metal, and the fans want to, then all the power to them.

Metal is often full of gate keepers, which makes sense because it takes an elite talent to play it, and its supported by counter culture fans. However, I think that people who tell you what is or what isn't Metal/ good music are wankers.

I recently started listening to a lot of music that I loved when I was younger. Death is one of those bands. The Sound of Perseverance is master piece, and one of the best conceptually sound Metal albums. The emotional conviction of the music is omnipresent, and it is a showcase of talent, and haunting melodies that makes up a constellation of brutality.

Yeah, I was in the seats and things always seem a little more tame from back that way I guess (I didn’t want to subject the lady friend to any goofy floor shenanigans...). Somewhat of a regret in hindsight. I could’ve been so much nearer to the Papa!

First and foremost, park near the exit. The longer walk into the building will be well worth it when you are leaving because there's only a couple of exits and things get gridlocked if you are stuck in the middle. I'm not a huge fan of the venue as it's a big rectangular room and sound isn't the greatest. Bars are on the outside of the room and you shouldn't have any issues getting beverages.

I think you might be, metal fans complaining about something not being metal enough is so lame. I love when bands bend metal into new genres (Devin Townsend is another great example), and Babymetal is just pure fun. Look at any of their live recordings from music festivals, I guarantee you won't find a more diverse crowd in any other rock/metal show. And there is nothing gimmicky about the Kami band, that's just an insult to the talent they have

Metal is a genre defined by it's extreme and ridiculous caricatures, so I can see why they've gotten popular, especially in niche markets. But I can't stand them personally.

I feel the same about most black and death metal. I mean look at the fonts for each of the bands you just posted, each one looks like it's trying to outdo the last for most unreadable. And I've seen way too many music videos featuring 4 pale white guys with long hair in a desolate winter forest. But I have no issue with any fans that do like that stuff, different tastes and whatnot. I'm just so tired of metal fans on the internet trying to out elite each other and labeling anything outside the norm as trash

Baby Metal creeps me out because it dips into the infantilization yet odd sexualization that Japan is especially known for. Makes my skin crawl.

I could understand that if you only watched their first few videos, where you're watching literal children dancing. But they ditched that school girl motif years ago when the 2nd album came out, and now they're in their 20's and nothing about their sound or image is overtly sexualized

I will say the hardcore Babymetal fans are cringe worthy and sometimes creepy. I put them in the same category as Rick & Morty, enjoy them for what they are but stay away from the fan forums

I'm honestly asking how old you guys are to understand something. Perhaps it's not such a big deal to be completely fabricated and fake, which is what BabyMetal is. A quirky idea executed by some record exec or manager who found these little girl singers and then studio musicians for the sole purpose of servicing a specific market.

The opposite of what makes the best music of all time, musicians who worked on their craft with friends and fellow musicians they were naturally drawn to within scenes. Who came out of obscurity with an incredible story, with substance and meaning to their art. People with artistic integrity.

Listen to them if you want, have fun. Just realize, BabyMetal is not to be taken seriously. :)

Maybe they aren't overtly sexualized anymore but they're still super "kawaii" and infantilized by design.

People are of course absolutely fine to like whatever they want to like... but it's also fair to critique them by saying they're manufactured, childish, and not to be taken seriously. I would argue their entire concept is based around being silly and ridiculous, so it shouldn't be shocking to see some natural pushback and criticism.

This is the path I have taken because I don't love all metal and I'm sure there are plenty of people that don't care for some of the metal I enjoy. As far as Baby Metal is concerned I simply don't care for their music. I absolutely love female fronted metal bands but they just don't appeal to me in any way from the young girls to the manufactured sound. I consider them the Spice Girls of heavy metal and I didn't like the Spice Girls either. That said I don't consider males that like them pervy or anything as people like what they like so I got no issues with their older male fans.

I've given it a few spins now and I can now confidently say Periphery's "Hail Stan" is my favourite metal album in a number of years. It's the first album with a Djent sound that's really resonated with me (could never really get into meshuggah, animals as leaders, etc.)

It's super progressive and runs the gamut from 'emo' to 'heavy as death'. At first the emo stuff was a bit of a turn off, but it gets carried by an elite vocal performance and most of the album is super heavy, so it helps break up the wall of sound.

The vocals stand out as a highlight on the album, but everything on it is top notch: the production, song writing and elite performances from every band member.

For me the stand out tracks are: Reptile (17 minute prog-metal masterpiece), It's only smiles (emo) War Eagle & Chvrch Bvrner (heavy as death)

Their new material seems to rub “diehards” the wrong way, but I will always think of them fondly. Went to Ensiferum and Kalmah last night at Dickens.
Great show, though Dickens was absolutely jammed pack (at Immolation, there was a lot more room to move around). The pit was crazy, but I'm getting a bit old to constantly get bumped around, so I pulled back a bit and still had a great view. The sound was good live for both bands.

I used to listen to both of these bands ~15 years ago, and it was a blast to see that they're still playing. A ton of fun live.

Was at the show last night too. Kalmah and Ensiferum were excellent as usual. It was a shame about Abigail Williams missing their guitarist as I definitely think that hurt their performance.

Dickens was packed. Almost to the point where I thought they were over code. Love to see that kind of turnout for great bands , but shows the need for more smaller venues in Calgary. Something in between a Dickens and The Palace.

In regards to Dickens they are really just making the best out of a basement bar. It's not really ideal for anything over half full because there's obstructed sightlines and the stage is tiny. Right now I would have to say the Palace is my favorite place to see a concert in this city.

I agree with the overcrowded assessment - Dickens was extremely packed. I would have liked a bigger venue for this show as well. If Alestorm played the palace, I probably could have gotten a ticket to that show as well!

It was less a song and more of a video/interview for me (although the song didnt' hurt). I was up past my bedtime one night because my parents had company over, and figured I'd see what was on TV. This was in the days of three channels so my choices were news, news or The New Music. One of the featured performers on TNM that week was Motorhead. My pre-teen brain sees Lemmy up on stage barking into a microphone and beating the crap out of his bass to Ace of Spades and thinks "this is weird...but strangely cool!". No coming back from that.

...and here's the interview!

So Poppy is a metal singer now. Don't know who poppy is? Weird AF, that's who she is. Anywho, she's touring with Gojira and Deftones this summer. Think of her as Babymetal meets Manson meets bubble gum pop. It's all absurd but fascinating given were she was 2 to 5 years ago.

Definitely a trip down the rabbit hole if you choose to brush up on Poppy. I generally find her salad fingers level of disturbing. But worth checking out.

yup, only found out about her a couple of weeks ago and got hooked. Really good album, weird and fascinating AF. There's a Manson/NIN vibe to a lot of the songs that I really like. And I always appreciate genre-mixing chaos so I shouldn't be too surprised that I actually like it.

I posted this in one of the other music threads months back as I wasn't sure what to make of this but it's grown on me. IMO her new album is actually pretty good. Heavy metal with a bit of pop fluff which isn't for everyone but at the same time there's some untapped creativity here that is fascinating. I'm not sure what the long term shelf life is for this type of music but in small doses I actually find it quite entertaining to listen to. Personally I feel she could probably shed the whole pop transition thing and go all heavy metal as she can sing, has some presence, and the band sounds tight.

yeah we'll see, after this album there's a number of directions that she could go. But she's with a good metal label now (Sumerian Records), which doesn't hurt.

either way, in a time where many metal bands gravitate to mainstream I do appreciate acts that pull out the UNO reverse card, so to speak. I've seen Youtube comments like "wth, we live in a world where Poppy is actually heavier than Bring Me The Horizon" ... ain't that the truth.

Thats probably where we differ, I find their melodic build ups a little off but their drops into black metal are awesome.

Even her melodies are off kilter and then when you least expect it this demon comes spewing out of her mouth from nowhere. Absolutely love it. And yeah it helps that she is easy on the eyes.

A lot of things I don't like about them like stage presence and a little too focused on her looks in videos but the sound is very interesting to me.

One thing that had me hooked is the Asian influence in her melodic vocals in that video in particular, something I didn't know I'd like in metal.

They're relatively new so some more polishing up is inevitable but I enjoy the foundation they have going on.

new Unleash the Archers album came out yesterday. Don't really like it too much so far ... Brittney Slayes is amazing and some of the songs are decent, but I feel they completely effed up the production. Guitars are mixed down way too much in favour of keyboards, don't think they did themselves a favour with that. Certainly hasn't wowed me off the bat like "Apex" did, but maybe it'll come with time. Still, like I said - some pretty good songs on there.

I couldn't get into Leviathan when it came out, I thought it suffered from the classic metal problem of everyone wanting to sound as brutal as possible, but as a whole it sounds like a mud. I've since come to realise it sounds really good when played loud as hell, but I do find myself preferring the later half of their career where they're a more refined product

This is my favourite metal album of 2020 so far:
pRbYVEl3go4

Great slow chugging riffs with some disgusting pitchshifted vocals.

Top YouTube comment cracks me up:
"This sounds like Sleep's Holy Mountain but with way heavier tone and the vocals performed by a garbage disposal, hell yea"
