Yeah, that's a great song right there. Pull the Plug off of Leprosy might be my favourite. Still kinda go back and forth on it though.

Yeah. At first, when I was getting into Black Metal, I thought "wtf is this voice". Didn't get into it, but now I can tolerate it at the very least. I can see why a lot of people wouldn't be able to get into Inquisiton just for the vocals, but all good for me. Developed the ear for it, I guess. The riffs are just too good!

That Absu track was very good.

How about some Bathory! Classic stuff. One of my favourites:

I have been listening to this band for a while. They are hard to describe, I would say a melodic black metal. Their muse is the Eastern Orthodox church. It is all in Polish, so, I have no clue what it's actually all about other than quality brutality.

The new The Faceless album just recently came out and may have slid into my top 3 of the year. And I don't recall liking their last 2 albums too much.

Couch Slut - Contempt
Decapitated - Anticult
Decrepit Birth - Axis Mundi
Entrails - World Inferno
Ex Dementia - Crack the Coffin
Exhumed - Death Revenge
Expulsion - Nightmare Future
The Faceless - In Becoming a Ghost
Full of Hell - Trumpeting Ecstasy
Gigan - Undulating Waves of Rainbiotic Iridescence
Goatwhore - Vengeful Ascension
Haemorrhage - We Are the Gore
Igorrr - Savage Sinusoid
Immolation - Atonement
Incantation - Profane Nexus
John Frum - A Stirring in the Noos

We’ll they pretty never really sounded like anyone else so why change! I grew up with King’s X and Galactic Cowboys and was super excited for the new album. It’s a good one IMO. A lot of fun to listen to and to play.

No new Kings X on the horizon but a new Ty Tabor solo release next month and Dug Pinnick is forever busy with his various side projects. The last KXM album was great (Luzier, Pinnick and Lynch). As was the last Jelly Jam album from one of Ty’s side projects (Tabor, Myung, Morgenstein).

That's not the original line up, though. Lemmy, Eddie and Phil is the classic line up.

Ty is releasing a solo album tomorrow. Dug is recording KXM3 right now. Both have said in various interviews they are also currently writing for the next King's X album and last I saw Ty thinks it'll be out before end of year.

I talk to Ty tomorrow...I'll let you know. (No I don't know him..it's a promotional type thing for his solo album)

Massive King's X fan here, I've seen them a total of 14 times and only one of those times was in Calgary. If pressed I would have to say they're my absolute favorite, as incredible as they are in the studio it's a whole other level when you're standing in front of them. Love that band.

It's a shame their 2nd visit here was pretty poorly attended (1st time here was a packed house), if I recall poorly promoted and the same night as a big rock concert, probably didn't exactly encourage them to come back. Both great shows though.

Glenn Tipton has been diagnosed with Parkinson's.

Ten years ago Glenn was diagnosed to have the onset of the early stages of Parkinson’s - from then until recently Glenn has lived his life as the great heavy metal guitar player he has always been, maintaining by his own definition a standard of quality and performance that is incredibly important.

Right now Glenn is able to play and perform some of the Priest songs that are less challenging but due to the nature of Parkinson's progression he wants to let you all know that he won't be touring as such -

True to the metal spirit of 'the show must go on' Glenn has requested Andy Sneap to fly the flag on stage for him

“I want everyone to know that it’s vital that the Judas Priest tour go ahead and that I am not leaving the band - it’s simply that my role has changed. I don’t rule out the chance to go on stage as and when I feel able to blast out some Priest! So at some point in the not too distant future I’m really looking forward to seeing all of our wonderful metal maniacs once again”

Rob, Richie, Ian and Scott have this to say:

“We have been privileged to witness Glenn’s determination and steadfast commitment over the years, showing his passion and self belief through the writing, recording and performing sessions with Priest - he is a true metal hero! We are not surprised by Glenn’s insistence that we complete the Firepower tour and thank Andy for joining us to make Glenn’s wishes become real - As Glenn has said we also can’t wait to have him with us at any time any place on the road..... We love you Glenn!”

Radio stations have started playing the lead single "Rats" off Ghost's upcoming album today. Can't provide a YT link which is staying up for a while because they are deleting everything quickly, but you'll find ways to hear it if you want. And it's fantastic IMO, catchy but also with a ton of interesting guitar work.

In terms of the imagery, they are apparently dropping the Papa Emeritus bloodline and go with Cardinal Copia instead. Probably not the final look, but he's been portrayed both in black and red robes so far. Pretty cool too that they had a red cardinal bird in the "Square Hammer" video (at about 3:27 below). Foreshadowing done right!

I've heard that quite often in regards to Ghost. Completely understandable too, they are certainly not for everyone.

Personally I'm a huge fan of the "image shtick". I love the music in itself, but the imagery is what sets them apart from other bands and makes them interesting in a way. It's just theatrical at the end of the day and I always love it when bands don't take themselves too seriously. They are fun and a break from the norm, and I certainly enjoy that.

On a completely different note, Mark Tremonti is releasing another album this June too. Psyched about that as well, he's become quite a good vocalist over the years.

They're only a notch below Five Finger Death Punch and Godsmack in my opinion. Well, that might be a bit harsh, but I've never liked a single song I've heard by Lamb of God.

LOL comparing Lamb of God to Five Finger Death Punch.

Thats definitely harsh. And confusing. LoG is better than those two in literally every way.

Lyrics, guitars, song structure, crushing vocals, drums!?!?! Not to mention seeing them live, Wall of Death man, Wall of Death.

LoG to me is hands down the best metal band since 2000 and even on their worst day are easily better than Five Finger Death Punch and Godsmack.

The new Amorphis album is awesome. They've incorporated more interesting elements (keyboards, choirs, strings, organs, sax, flutes etc.) into their trademark sound on this one and it pays off. It's an album that needs a bit of time and attention, but it's definitely worth it. Too bad my favourites "Message in the Amber", "The Golden Elk" and "Heart of the Giant" haven't made it to Youtube yet, so these three will have to do.

Sounds all right but they are a bit of a pale imitation of Lacuna Coil. Not a bad band to emulate though.

Ha ha ha Five Finger Death Punch has become the Nickelback of metal. People just love to hate them because they have become successful. I can only take bro-metal in small doses but I thought they put on a good live show.

I think of them more as the Steven Seagal of metal.

I'm not sure I know what that means relative to music ha ha. I get why people don't like them as they aren't very original (who is these days?), they have an annoying, short, angry singer (like Godsmack), and all their music sounds the same (also like Godsmack). The fact that they are very popular is more an indictment on the tastes of the masses than anything.

I do feel for bands because a lot of their core fans expect them to make the same music over and over in every album which eventually leads to eroding the fan base due to fans getting tired of the sound (not everyone can be AC/DC). If the band experiments or changes things then the core fans accuse them of being sellouts. Obviously there are extremes that direction such as Linkin Park who tried to morph from alternative metal into a pop band which made nobody happy. Five Finger Death Punch is taking the business approach giving bro-metal fans what they want over the artistical approach and making a lot of money in progress. I don't love them nor do I hate them as I would probably go see them again live but they aren't a regular on my music rotation either because I have had my fill of their music.

my biggest problem honestly are the lyrics. I'm so sick of their ultra-patriotic, war-loving ####. I could look past that if they weren't so generic musically ... and I hate the voice too. Saw them live twice (once at a festival and once as support for A7X) and they were okay ... but I can't listen to them on a regular basis.

But what do I know, I never liked Slayer.

Yeah the war stuff gets old but and as Canadians I think it's harder to associate with that but catering to the military has actually been part of their recipe for becoming so popular in the US. I haven't even listened to their new album yet but I have a feeling I know what it's going to sound like.

It's the lyrics for me too. It seems Ivan Moody loves to sing about how tough he is, and how he wont back down. There is zero depth to his lyrics, and I find that completely lame. Other than that I dont mind them. Soncially they sound ok, sure they're the Nickelback of metal but you cant say Nickelback doesn't know how to write a song.

I saw Ice Nine Kills last March at the Palace and they were great live. Lead singer has a fantastic voice with a lot of range and their music is pretty catchy after a few listens. Their new album is kind of a horror concept album and it's a lot of fun and the extended version videos play into each other;

Wasn't a huge fan of Slipknot in their earlier days, but really digging their newer stuff. The Grey Chapter is probably my favorite album they've put out, and the single for the upcoming album sounds great

Listening to that takes me back to their Iowa days. I like. A little more tamed than that album but it's good. Always had a fondness for that big drum sound.

EDIT: Kind of ripping off Parkway Drive from the 3:30 mark onward. You can hear the same breaks on Deep Blue. Not sure if I like it or hate it. Deep Blue is hallowed ground to me.

I was big into Soilwork in the early 2000's, but then they fell off my radar right up until this popped up on Google music and blew me away

nuItul-D0PA

Really looking forward to their new album in January

Pfft. The real heart of Soilwork was Peter Wichers. He's the genius that came up with some of the most inventive, unexpected, and totally awesome harmonic progressions I've heard from a melodic metal band. I'll never forget watching the "making of" video for The Panic Broadcast and when asked what a song was called he says "A-minor blues." But if you listen carefully, it really was. And if you go all the way back to the beginning, almost all of their music he wrote was heavily blues based, just wrapped up in a death metal blanket.

Steelbath Suicide
Chainheart Machine
A Predator's Portrait (a flawless record in every regard)
Natural Born Chaos (produced by Devin Townsend)
Figure Number Five
Stabbing The Drama

Then Wichers leaves the band and they record the absolutely terrible "Sworn To A Great Divide."

Then Wichers returns to the band and they record the absolutely outstanding "The Panic Broadcast."

Then Wichers leaves the band again and they record a double album called "The Living Infinite" which was more like The Infinite Meh. Boring as hell. This new cut sounds like it is from the same cloth. Without Wichers they're just a generic, boring band.

I've seen them three times live and loved it every time, but their best songs are all written by Wichers. Go listen to the genius of A Predator's Portrait again then compare it to this, and there is no contest. Peter Wichers IS Soilwork, not Bjorn (although man that guy can sing. Their first two albums didn't have any clean vocals at all, so its great to hear him continuing to stretch vocally).

The boys are finally back, and not without a share of controversy as usual. The video and song are a commentary on Germany and its history to the modern day (including elements relating to WW2/Nazism/holocaust).

Yep. It seems that the media is already all over it stateside as well. Most are seemingly just going by the promo clip, characterizing it as a trivialization of the holocaust. It’s the race for clicks!

yeah, saw the same over here. It's pretty funny, Rammstein have been around for so long and people still are so eager to jump through their hoops.

The video is pretty crazy in terms of references, hints and parodies. If you like to overthink, there's a ton in there to dissect. And of course there's the lyrics to the song, which are ambiguous as ever. And yeah, Till singing lines like "Germany, I just can't give you my love" during those Nazi scenes kind of conflict with the allegations of trivialization, but people see what they want to see.

It's a decent song but for a band that was on hiatus for a long time it's not exactly breaking any new ground as it feels a little old like it could have come off any of their older albums. It looks like they put more effort into the video.

Nothing wrong with sticking with the old sound. I don't expect them to go Linkin Park and go from metal to pop. I feel the video is taking all the attention away from the actual song that is not their best material musically. That said it's just the first single as the album could have some better songs.

And yeah, the various references to German history wizzing by the screen in this video are pretty plentiful and interesting. See the article below:

New Rammstein album is bonkers. Probably their most well-rounded record, and represents a definite maturation of their sound/culmination of everything they've done up until now. Has everything from poppy Eurodance (Ausländer), to dark and demented black metal-ish vibes (Puppe). Overall it's not as dark and gloomy as some of their previous material, but it's fun to listen to and is still very much Rammstein.

There are a couple of growers on there that took a few listens to warm up to (Weit Weg's an example for me). Although there are a couple of great riffs on this album as there always are, Till and Flake really steal the show at points with the vocals and synths. The electronics had taken a bit of a step back for a few albums in a row, so I've been loving that the keyboards take a more prominent role this time around.

I agree with kermit on Ausländer. It's poppy (without being TOO cheesy) but is definitely one of the ones that burrows its way in to your head for hours at a time.

Some bad news for Megadeth fans: Dave Mustaine's been diagnosed with throat cancer.

Mustaine announced his diagnosis on the metal band's website, but said he was optimistic about his treatment plan.

"It's clearly something to be respected and faced head on - but I've faced obstacles before," he said.

"I'm working closely with my doctors, and we've mapped out a treatment plan which they feel has a 90% success rate. Treatment has already begun."

I don't think the age matters that much seeing there's been plenty of boy bands and underage pop stars. You can like the music without having to feel some sort of sexual connection an artist. I'm all over the map liking a lot of varieties of music but I just can't get into Kawaii metal so it's nothing to do with the girls for me as I love female fronted metal bands like Jinjer, In this Moment, Delain, Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation, etc. Maybe if I gave it more listens I could grow to like it more but since there's not a shortage of music I like to listen to I just don't feel like putting in the time.

I can understand why some think he's brilliant as there's a lot going on, it's very polished and clever as you really don't know what to expect from within each song let alone song to song. I can see this is going to take several listens for me to really warm up to this as I can't figure out if it's truly great music or more of a guy trying really hard to impress us with his genius.

It's an album that takes a few listens, for sure. If nothing else you have to admire his audacity and effort. I personally love the record.

saw Jinjer live tonight. If you have the chance to see them, do yourselves a favor and go for it ... they are super-awesome, even more so in concert. The band is tight and their timing is just perfect, and Tatiana, well, that woman is absolutely incredible. Switching between cleans and growls and having both sound great is incredibly hard, and she makes it look it easy. Wonderful performance, sadly a relatively short set (TesseracT was the main act, but most people were there for Jinjer and TesseracT had to deal with an almost half-empty room).

crazy that half of 2019 is gone already! Time flies. Lots of great music so far this year, at least in my opinion - and some great albums are yet to come (Tool, Alter Bridge, Babymetal, Chevelle, Deftones, Jinjer, Mastodon, Be'Lakor, Band-Maid, Russian Circles etc ... okay, some of them might actually come in 2020, but I'm still optimistic :Dhttps://forum.calgarypuck.com/data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7). Some of my favourites (both rock and metal) so far:

Eluveitie - Deathwalker (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BaNfmNFrLQY)
Cellar Darling - Insomnia (live) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aV-uzJQN3mU)
Amon Amarth - Crack the Sky (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cLFdIzMhn8)
Soen - Covenant (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tV13GZznfew)
Baroness - Borderline (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQX_oVVORFU)
In Flames - I, the Mask (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0sujFluBlE)
Swallow the Sun - The Crimson Crown (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEVHFtFUIss)
Babymetal - Elevator Girl (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GN-2rPEYUUo)
Mark Morton ft. Chester Bennington - Cross Off (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fv8oTQWaxwc)
Frozen Crown - Neverending (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9o0imRANjm0)
Tyr - Sunset Shore (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oAt3mBEKRk)
Russian Circles - Arluck (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79btD88nFbY)

New Russian Circles you say eh? Thay grabbed my attention. Thay will pair nicely with the new TOOL.

I was thinking about going but I already have tickets for four different concerts (Ghost, Lacuna Coil, Delain, and Jinjer) from end of Sept to late October. I like some Arch Enemy songs but I can only handle that kind of singing in small doses. I like that Jinjer breaks up the growls with bridges in most of their songs which at least to me makes them more enjoyable to listen.

New video from Lacuna Coil (my favorite Italian band) in Calgary Oct. 6. Great band. Lets get out and support these bands!

And fair enough about screaming, metal is a weird type of music to get into at a baseline. I personally could listen to cookie monster screaming all day long.

That's probably part of the reason one of my favourite bands recently has been whitechapel. I was also at the children of bodom show earlier this year and completely lucked out and got to have drinks after the show with the whole band.

Oh i hope that same tour stops in Vancouver. That's two bucket list bands in one show. At the Gates being the big one for me followed by Amon Amarth. Seen Arch Enemy a long time ago in a plane hangar in Calgary with Bullet for my Valentine and Cradle of Filth.

only month to go until the new Tool album drops :) today they've announced the title: "Fear Inoculum". And they've also announced that their albums will finally be available on streaming services this Friday. About time!

Tool hasn't released an album in 13 years, so I'm really interested in hearing where they go with it. Their evolution as a band seemed to plateau around Schism and 10,000 days. Will it be a masterpiece over a decade in the making? Or will it be a complete mess performed by disinterested musicians?

New King Diamond album forthcoming called The Institute. During the Europe tour he is currently on he released a new track called Masquerade Of Madness. First new KD song in like 11 years! I like it, sounds like old school KD from the 80's.
