Pretty much pure metalcore, but they do it well for sure. One of the few metalcore bands I legitimately like.

Meanwhile the new Horrendous album leaked well ahead of its Oct 27th release date.
Their album from 2014 was one of my favourites easily.

Has been on repeat since release. Great sound these guys have. I haven't tried their previous releases yet, but they hit the nail right on the head with the combination of melodies, riffage, and mood on this album.

Cool band!

Well, Motorhead does have an album called "Orgasmatron"...

If Lemmy (http://ultimateclassicrock.com/tags/lemmy/)‘s health problems ever end up forcing Motörhead (http://ultimateclassicrock.com/tags/motorhead/) off the road, the band members will at least be able to look forward to the royalties from their new, officially endorsed line of sex toys.
Promising “the loudest buzz in the world,” the group worked with Lovehoney (http://www.lovehoney.com/) (“the sexual happiness people”) to develop “four bullet and classic torpedo-shaped vibrators, all decorated with the band’s iconic logo and branding,” designed to “deliver the power and pleasure fans would expect from the ‘loudest band on Earth.’”

Thanks to this post I now know they'll be in my neck of the woods on NOV. 4th.

I missed out on Dark Tranquillity and Insomnium earlier this summer, I am going to try and not miss these guys.

And another new song/video from their new album:

Still pretty pop heavy but I'll definitely still get their new record. They always have a penchant for coming in soft and destroying your brain through an album.

Has anybody been spinning Book of Souls? Thoughts? I'm enjoying much of it so far.

I received the CD yesterday and have listened to it a few times. It's a juggernaut of an album coming in at 92 minutes, but it is well-paced. At this stage of their career, Maiden could have played it safe, but the sheer scope and the scale of effort that went into this record shows that Maiden weren't going to rest on their laurels.

The closer, Empire of the Clouds - coming in at 18 minutes! - is interesting, but I prefer the short songs like The Speed of Light and Death or Glory.

Also of note is Tears of a Clown - a tribute to Robin Williams.

picked it up a few days back and have given it a few listens. There's a lot to digest, but I'm definitely digging it. If Eternity Should Fail, The Man of Sorrows and Empire of the Clouds are my faves so far.

Has anybody been spinning Book of Souls? Thoughts? I'm enjoying much of it so far.

Fantastic IMHO. Man of Sorrows is likely the weakest track for me and they certainly indulge in many places but I think it can be put right beside the classics on the shelf. Dickinson while straining to reach to upper end some is singing with power throughout the entire album which given he was undergoing cancer treatment is quite something. Empire of the Clouds was a definite departure being based around Dickinson on the piano and certainly long but after several listens it has likely become my favourite along with Red and Black. The two longest songs on the album I think.....my Dream Theater training has prepared me well.

Nice to see the band 40 years into it decide to stretch a bit while remaining distinctly Maiden.

2016 tour (March for US and Canada) on tap. Ed Force One is now a 747-400 and of course Dickinson is working towards getting his certification to captain it. Can't wait for the tour.

Sabbath...yes this sounds like it is the final tour. Iommi is saying he just can't do tours anymore with his health and age. Sucks that Ward won't be along for the ride. Not sure if they are doing another album or not. Nothing seems definitive at this point.

I don't know if I'd classify Rammstein as metal, but some people likely do and I don't know where else to stick this reply so the Metal thread it is.

The new Rammstein Blu-Ray, Amerika, arrived yesterday and I watched the concert portion. I highly recommend it, even for non-Rammstein fans as their show is quite entertaining.

This concert footage was taken primarily from the MSG Dec 2010 show. There is also a two hour + documentary disc that I haven't watched yet but I certainly look forward to it.

I saw them at Greenfields in Switzerland in 2013 and I have to say it was the best show I've ever seen.

Speaking of documentaries, has anyone seen the one about the Scorpions? It is on Shaw VOD right now. I lost interest in the Scorpions after the Blackout album, but the documentary was very good.

Definitely had this on day one, and it has been a long time coming, as that tour was five years ago. I've seen Rammstein live five times (twice in Europe and thrice in Canada), and the show is incredible. They've been my favourite band for a long time.

My friend was at the MSG show featured on the Blu Ray (some Montreal footage is spliced in also) and it supposedly wasn't their greatest show, but the production on the Blu Ray is great and it's well worth the money. The documentary is awesome too.

They came back to North America for the first time in 10 years on their tour a few years ago, but skipped Calgary. They did Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and some dates out east. The things we hear about the Dome as being non-ideal for musical acts applies doubly so for Rammstein I'd imagine, as the show is very prop and pyro heavy, so yeah. It hasn't happened yet, anyway.

Former drummer for Motorhead, Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor, died yesterday at age 61. One of rock's great characters.

Taylor's former MOTÖRHEAD bandmate "Fast" Eddie Clarke posted the following tribute to his colleague: "My dear friend and brother passed away last night. He had been ill for sometime but that does not make it any easier when the time finally comes.

"I have known Phil since he was 21 and he was one hell of a character. Fortunately, we made some fantastic music together and I have many many fond memories of our time together.
"Rest in peace, Phil!"

I've seen both Slayer & Megadeth in the last few years, so I'll probably pass on both. But given the venues I'd lean towards Megadeth/Children of Bodom if I had to choose one. But Testament opening for Slayer ain't too shabby either.

Hey guys, I need a metal education. I'm trying to expand my appreciation of metal but I'm also mostly looking to pick up some more metal on vinyl.

Right now I have Iron Maiden's Piece of Mind and Dio's The Last in Line. I don't like modern metal but want to expand my 80s metal horizons. I'll even dabble a bit into the glam side. I just like searing vocals, the thundering base, awesome solos, and sometimes even the quieter prog rock type songs that appear sometimes on these albums.

Thanks. I live and die on recommendations.

I have this thing where I buy records music un-heard so that it's my first time hearing a song when I play an album for the first time (therefore, no previewing on Youtube!).

This list helps a lot. From what I recognize from the above, this might be pretty spot on. I now remember the Lynch solo from "In My Dreams" from when I was a little kid and thinking it was great and trying to teach myself it on guitar.

I remember reading about Sykes. Is there any good stuff from when he was with Thin Lizzy? (another situation where I know what Thin Lizzy is because I keep seeing the albums in stores but I am refraining from actually listening to anything from them unless I actually buy the album!).

On the Classic vs. Modern thing, I just feel that classic is a little more melodic and new metal is a little too much emphasis on drums and djent.

I saw this yesterday. This guy is pretty entertaining.

Phil Anselmo makes a total ass of himself at Dimebash this year. He was making anti semetic gestures and yelling out "white power". This has no place anywhere and especially not in metal music where scrutiny is heavily focused. Robb Flynn from machine head calls him out in a brilliant speech. Phil sucks, and always has. He's had plenty of incidents like this in the past, not sure why anyone is surprised. Metal music in general has a long history of racism. Glad people are finally starting to realize it, and call it what it is.

Anyways...for Dream Theater fans, or most likely those that aren't, The Astonishing just came out. It's a double disc rock opera. And indeed it is a rock opera. This is a must watch for all metal heads and skeptics.

Anyone liking the new Anthrax? I wouldn't even consider myself a big fan but I've been listening to it nonstop, best vocals Belladonna has ever done and the songs are strong as hell. I bought all the albums from the 80s but last time I really got into these guys was "White Noise", I'm a bit surprised that it's so good.

New Anthrax album is great though I think I like Worship Music better. Belladonna fits the group and I'm so glad he's been back in the fold the last two albums.

Also coming out soon is a new Jelly Jam album.

http://www.thejellyjam.com/style/header.jpg

Jelly Jam is Ty Tabor (King's X), John Myung (Dream Theater), Rod Morgenstein (Dixie Dregs).

This is their 4th album...6th if you include two Platypus albums which was these three guys plus Derek Sherinian (Former Dream Theater). They will be touring this album I believe.

I can't stop listening to the new Babymetal album. It helps that I already have a preference to bands that experiment and try new things, especially in metal, and that this album is a lot more serious in tone and not so cutesy. Aside from the vocals this song would fit right in on a Cannibal Corpse album

ICDJ8Y7WM50

Plus there's a heavy Dream Theater influence on a few of the other songs which I really dig, and even a folk metal battle hymn. After the first album you could have brushed the band off as some weird Japanese experiment, but after listening to Metal Resistance there's obviously someone with real talent composing the songs, and I for one dig the vocals

It boggles my mind how much I am enjoying this. I should hate it, but for some reason I don't. Then I saw them on Colbert recently too, I thought it was awesome. You're right, the music itself is proper metal, not 'metal' like you'd see on a TV show or movie where they're at a concert or something.

That Colbert appearance has given them a huge bump in the last couple of days. Media websites from Buzzfeed to the New York Times had articles about it and how good it was, and the Youtube video was the #1 link on the biggest music sub-reddit yesterday (/r/music). That Colbert video is just shy of 1.3 million views and is by far the most popular music act he's ever had on the show, it'll probably be the most popular Late Show clip on Youtube in a week or two

I really want to see them live, especially in Japan if at all possible. Their big stage shows are nuts

Much more Andrea's (male) vocals are much more aggressive...take the guttural vocals that are often in the background and move them front and center for a good chunk of the album. The production has that thick, wet sound, and the songs and structures have more in common with the 80s than they do with anything Metallica has put out in the last 20 years. I'm sure the old guard fans will like it and the newer-ish fans won't care anyways, it's Metallica, buy it.

At least Lars snare doesn't sound like a garbage can getting hit by a 76 Buick, gotta give them credit for that.

And even when Metallica was good, Lars held them back. Such a mediocre drummer.

Technically yes he is mediocre (when it comes to actual professional musicians...he is better than any wannabe). But pioneering and influential are words that are a better fit. Or as Portnoy has put it:

"I don't judge drummers based on their technical ability; I judge them based on the overall package and what they bring to the music they're part of. And what Lars brings to the music of METALLICA is absolutely invaluable. So I could care less if his meter might be slightly up and down, or if his fills are slightly sloppy; I don't care about that. To me, there's way more to being a good drummer than precision and technique."

Heck Lars has himself said he's not an accomplished drummer but that he is the best guy at understanding what needs to go alongside James' rhythm guitar. And he's probably correct.

Anyways the live debut of Hardwired

What's interesting about that Portnoy quote is that he epitomizes it. He's a fantastic drummer, technically advanced no doubt, but he also has a rep of being an out of this world drummer. He isn't. But I cannot think of a drummer who plays the coolest part for any song. His ear is unbelievable. Portnoy is the king of "crowd pleasing" drumming. Linear cross patterns and metric modulation are his bag, and he applies them in ways that most people can't hear to begin with.

The correct response is they all sound the same. I remember actually laughing out loud at the stretch between Disciple and Exile, because they all started with a very similar riff that had slight differences to them. Slayer gets some credit for not compromising their sound, but at the same time they still haven't made an album I'd consider very good since 1991. I think they've suffered tremendously when Jesper left...though they weren't trending in the right direction with him I'd agree.

Anyways when it comes to best of the year the two albums that keep me coming back for more in 2016 are Anthrax "For All Kings" and Lacuna Coil "Delirium". The former being a continuation of the strong work on Worship Music since Belladonna's return and the latter because they finally let Andrea go back to his strength (more guttural and gritty vocals). It also helps that Lacuna Coil were great to talk to after the Kansas show I went to and indeed the show was fantastic.

Saw this band live in 2011. Absolutely insane, and they've only gotten better since then.

I liked Hardwired but it was sort of paint by numbers Metallica. MIF is fantastic.

Metallica was on Howard Stern this week. They said it took two years to do this album because they do it in bits and pieces around their family time and such but the Hardwired to Self Destruct single was done at the very and recently (June) and written in a week as they felt they needed an energetic short song to promote the album.

What in the hell happened to Kirk Hammet? That solo was so, so sloppy.

Another boring WAH Wahh solo from Kirk, what else is new? Like the rest of the song, tho.

MONSTER MAGNET To Enter Studio In November

MONSTER MAGNET will enter the studio in November to begin recording its new album for a tentative summer 2017 release. Frontman Dave Wyndorf told Ivaylo Alexandrov from the Bulgarian cultural/lifestyle portal Sofia Live (http://www.sofialive.bg/heroes/nash-chovek/786-dave-wyndorf.html) about MONSTER MAGNET's planned follow-up to 2013's "Last Patrol": "This is full-ahead rock. This one is a little bit shorter album — like ten songs — full-ahead Detroit-style-, early '70s-, MC5-, STOOGES-type rock. And I'm gonna see if that makes any difference to the fans at all. I mean, it still sounds like MONSTER MAGNET, of course, but it's a little less on the psychedelic side and more on the power-rock side."

The lead singer was right, it's a grower not a show-er.

So the new Metallica album leaked online a few days ago. It's pretty great? I saw it summed up best as "The whole album sound like modern Metallica playing old Metallica."

Suffers from the same issue as Death Magnetic in regards songs that feel way too long, but overall it's enjoyable.

The last track is really killer:

So after having some time to be closely acquainted with the new Opeth and In Flames albums...

meh...

Opeth continues to be moving more and more into Alan Parsons Project territory with every album and Sorceress is no exception. Nothing really standout, and so many "so close" moments that make you want to start liking it that morph into extended noodling.

6/10 as a Prog fan
4/10 as a Metal fan

In Flames does a bit better with Battles. The first half of the disc is really solid IMO even though there are definitely some "mainstream" moments with a bit of a hard rock vibe thrown around. People complain about the kids but I'm a sucker for choral parts so those bits are good IMO. The second half of the disc lags hard and really struggles to keep your attention save Wallflower, and the CDs bonus track Us Against The World is excellent. A few of the solos are really terrible however, completely incongruent with the song they show up in. Better than Siren Charms, about as good overall as Sounds Of A Playground Fading, but definitely 2010s In Flames, a far cry from 90s In Flames but acceptable.

6.5/10 as a whole

I'm enjoying the new Metallica record, but I also enjoyed Death Magnetic quite a bit as well and think it still holds up as a decent trash record.

One of the things I really like about the reinvigorated Metallica is that they just sound so damn relaxed & confident now. Like they've had the weight of the world lifted from their shoulders and they are able to just step on the gas & go.

No pressure to redefine who they are, or play catch up with a younger breed of heavy bands, just content to put out some solid heavy records and not over think it.

Just too long an album. If there were more (or more interesting) ideas here it wouldn't be so bad, but it gets a little repetitive. And like Death Magnetic there just aren't that many memorable songs (Moth Into Flame and Spit Out The Bone being the exceptions) even if you don't think anything is too awful. Pretty much a 3.5/5 record to me, I don't see it as a big grower.

I've listened to Hardwired a few times now. I think for the most part it's a good album but as some have stated the songs are a bit too long. They are all around six minutes and while they could get away with that in their early years when they were in their prime, now it feels a bit like they are stretching things with a little too much filler. Still though this is better than St. Anger, Load, Re-Load.

devo22
11-29-2016, 05:42 PM
funny that you mention Load/Re-Load (which I actually kinda liked, and yeah, I know I'm in the minority here) because with those I got the same feeling as with Hardwired: could have been a killer album if you made it a single disc and took out the fillers. Too bad that they released two of the best songs (Moth into Flame and Atlas Rise) in advance and couldn't hold that level for longer stretches. Still a solid effort, but yeah, too long.

I read a recent interview with Hetfield and it sounds like he was against making the Loads separate albums but was outnumbered.

As far as the album the only songs I don't dig are ManUNkind, Am I Savage?, and Murder One. A few didn't hit me on the first listen but I got into the second or third listen. Halo on Fire kind of reminds me of a modern Fade to Black especially in the outro.

Erick Estrada
11-30-2016, 07:21 AM
I don't understand why they still feel the need to make every song (Hardwired was the only short song and that was made at the last minute for a first release single) over 5 minutes long. I get that most of their past work has been like this but in the digital age where people can bypass complete albums and pick and choose singles I feel quality is more important that quantity and if they trimmed the fat on some of these songs they may sell more singles. Even for long time listeners like me these new songs are harder to get into than they should be because they drag on too long. To be fair this isn't just a Metallica complaint as anytime I see a new album from a band I like I tend to groan a bit when I see a few tracks close to six minutes too long.

I think it's an darn good album from Metallica. They get back to their roots a bit but put it over some of the, I don't know, bluesy swagger maybe, they developed since Justice.

I like it. A couple of filler songs for sure but a couple of tremendous ones as well. I think it's a solid 4 to 4.3 out of 5. It's not a 5 but it's darn good.

I have the deluxe edition and the Rasputin concert is fun.

Went to see Dream Theater in Tulsa a few weeks ago. Not everyone's cup of tea I know and given they were performing their rock opera "The Astonishing" from start to end I was skeptical. It isn't my favourite album to say the least. It was simply one of the best concerts I've ever attended. They did a darn fine job with the graphic novel-esque videos running behind the band advancing the plot etc. LaBrie sounded better than I've ever heard him including his recorded work to be honest. Very, very good show. I personally prefer them live without Portnoy as Magini isn't always looking to hog the attention like Portnoy. It has especially allowed Myung to step up front a bit more (it's subtle as he's not the most outgoing player but it's a change).

I'd give it a 4 too. I don't even find the length of the songs a problem until it gets to Am I Savage? and Murder One but Spit Out The Bone makes up for it.

The reception it's getting from the general public seems to be pretty positive too. I've heard alot of "I stopped listening after Load but I love this" comments.

Right? I mean it's cool Gojiras going to get even more exposure touring with metallica but I too cannot justify shelling out any amount of dough just to see the opening act in BC place. not really "metal", but I've always had a really, really, really soft spot for them. "Disclaimer" and "Karma & Effect" were simply outstanding albums back then. Incredible live band too and very nice guys, saw them live in Austria a couple of years ago and, it being a small venue, they stayed back and drank beer with the audience. This one sounds a bit like Chevelle IMO, which is never a bad thing.

In the interest of honestly trying not to come across like an dickhead here, I will not complain if your response to this is"eff off" and you may be right to say it, but... Commonwealth isn't the old arena either, it's the football stadium.

Anyway, as absurd as it sounds, that price tag doesn't sound too crazy. I got cajoled into some pretty crappy seats for Guns n' Roses there this summer and they aren't much less than than $220. I get to watch Fat Axl on a giant TV from half a mile away for $175.

Yeah, I was interested in going to see GNR since I never got the chance in the 90s but I wasn't going to pay $300 after fees like my sister did.

I was really hoping tickets would be what they were the last time I saw Metallica but decided this could be the last time I get to see them live and I've always wanted to see them in a stadium so I went for it. It ended up being $208 after fees and $4 for shipping. I'm not sitting as close as I hoped (240, row K at BC Place) but it should be a good view for a stadium show. I sat a section or two closer for AC/DC and couldn't see the drummer and alot of the stage props.

All day, all night it's Gojira and Insomnia for me lately. It's like a fiending I cannot sate.
The thing with Gojira is that I absolutely love "Magma", but have a hard time enjoying most of their earlier stuff. Can't really explain it, it just doesn't grasp me as much. Which is a damn shame because "Magma" is a masterpiece. Insomnium meanwhile ... I don't know, the first time I heard "While We Sleep" was just pure eargasm :D

Amorphis and Omnium Gatherum also look like pretty cool bands, I guess I need to get even more into those Finnish and Swedish bands :D

Is anyone going to be looking in to Emperor of Sand by Mastodon? Crack the Skye remains my favourite offering by them, with the Hunter being somewhat of a disappointment and Once More 'Round the Sun being a bit of an improvement.

yeah I'm looking forward to it. Really liked the new songs they've put out so far.

Agreed on "Crack the Skye", also my favourite Mastodon album so far.

I'm hooked on this song :https://youtu.be/RK_sesJ5j7g

I don't know, L'enfant Sauvage is another utterly brilliant album Imo.

And the album The Way of all Flesh is what got me hooked.

I can honestly listen to their entire catalogue over and over right now. Like I said earlier, just an insatiable need to have them in my ears.

As for the other bands, I really dig B'ela Kor or however you spell it. Love their brand of melodo metal.

Can't get enough of the new Mastodon album. I rarely buy physical copies anymore, but this one I simply had to get. "The Hunter" and "Once Round the Sun" didn't really do a lot for me, but this one seems very much like a return to form. We'll see if it can challenge "Crack the Skye" in terms of longevity, but I wouldn't be surprised ... there are some seriously outstanding songs on there. They've always been great musicians, but I feel they've improved tremendously as vocalists and the balance between heavy riffs and catchy hooks is just right on "Emperor of Sand". Hats off!

Yep I've given it a couple of spins today and although one or two songs may have struck me as a little filler-ish, the album as a whole seems to stand out more than the previous two.

I've been a big Mastodon fan since the beginning. Personally, I really loved their sludgey sound on Lifesblood, Remission, and Leviathan. But I also really enjoy all their recent "progressive metal" albums since.

That being said, I think Emperor of Sand is my favourite out of their work post-Leviathan. The other albums I tend to enjoy a handful of songs more than the album as a whole, but I really enjoy this one top to bottom.

Still, their early albums were amazing IMO.

I'll get to the new Mastodon eventually, I would agree the last two albums have been meh, but that's the problem when you set a high standard. But I threw on Alien today and yeah there's really no doubt this is the pinnacle of insanity. Does it get any better than "I CAN'T EVEN EAT! AND I CAN'T EVEN ####ING PISS!". God bless you Devin.

I never really got into "Remission" and the other very early stuff. They won me over back then with some stuff on "Leviathan", especially the crazy country riff right in the middle of "Megalodon". And then there was "Seabeast", and its final 45 seconds almost made me want to go and hunt for Moby Dick myself.

Emperor of Sand is definitely the best they've put out since Crack the Skye I'd say, after having listened quite a few times. The Mastodon purists seem to really dislike Brann Dailor's increased vocal presence on the album, but I find that his soaring style is refreshing and brings a great emotional element to the album.

It's Insomnium for me 24/7 right now. Their latest album "Winter's Gate" is a masterpiece ... the remarkable thing about this one is that it's just one 40 minute long song. I was skeptic about it at first, but they manage to pull it off. Never gets boring and has a lot of great moments. Melodeath fans should check it out, sadly it's not on Youtube though.

Also discovering their discography by going backwards. Outstanding band.

Post #1145 of this thread from all the way back in September I posted winters gate. Somehow I've forgotten I had this album and now refreshing my ears. And oh the feast of melododeath perfection. Seriously, I do not think any band does melododeath better than insomnium, especially in the last three or four years.

Shade Empire is coming on fast and hard though, if you're digging insomnium, really give your ears a really good Shade Empire bath.

Schizophrenia by Sepultura is my favorite.

If you're into thrash, check out Darkest Hour and their break out album " Undoing Ruin" it's still on regular play to this day since it's release in 2005.

I'm going to make a list of albums constantly in rotation.

1. Raised Fist: Sound of the Republic
2. Darkest Hour: Undoing Ruin
3. Parkway Drive: Deep Blue
4. Gojira: The way of all flesh
5. Shade Empire: Omega Arcane
6. Insomnium: Above the weeping world
7. Dark Tranquillity: We are the Void
8. Cradle of Filth: Midian
9. Sepultura: Chaos A.D
10. 36 Crazyfists: Time and Trauma.

Oh man, Schizophrenia is such a great record. To The Wall is probably my favourite song off of it.
Anything from Morbid Visions/Bestial Devestation, Schizophrenia, Beneath the Remains, Arise, Chaos A.D. and Roots is just A+ in my books. I pretty much like every song on those albums. S'why old Sepultura is one of my favourite bands of all time.

Also really liked the music videos they made for those albums
Everyone should check out the music videos for these songs:
Sepultura - Inner Self(A favourite of mine)
Sepultura - Dead Embryonic Cells(I posted that above. Also a favourite)
Sepultura - Arise(Also a favourite)
Sepultura - Territory(A favourite)
Sepultura - Slave New World(A favourite)
Sepultura - Roots Bloody Roots
Sepultura - Refuse/Resist

Badass.

So I left black metal for last on my metal journey, and I left Burzum for last on that journey. Varg is obviously a pretty awful human being, but I suppose that doesn't change the fact that this is one of the best metal songs ever.

Listening a bit to the second album by Next to None. It's called "Phases". This is a young band featuring Mike Portnoy's son Max Portnoy on drums. There are some clunky/cheesy/bad lyrics (they are still teenagers), some questionable choices (ie. scratching) and some obvious influences musically (Dream Theater of course and Lamb of God) but I think they show some promise as the move forward and mature. I will say this I do think the vocalist is the weak link. His clean singing isn't up to par and his growls are merely passable. He'll need to get better in a hurry for them to progress.

Not promoting it as a must have as it's a middling album but it's a new band with some interesting pieces. They just need to figure out how to put the pieces together better.

_nJmMFKKtGM

Speaking of the ever arrogant Mike Portnoy he has yet another new band, Sons of Apollo, releasing an album in the near future. Along with Portnoy the band features:
Billy Sheehan (Mr. Big, ex-David Lee Roth, Winery Dogs) - bass

Jeff Scott Soto (Trans Siberian Orchestra, ex-Malmsteen, ex-Journey) - vocals

Derek Sherinian (ex-Dream Theater and a bunch of others) - keyboards

Bumblefoot (Art of Anarchy, ex-Axl and Friends) - guitar

Amorphis is one of my favourites. If you have not already done so you need to check out their three-album trilogy: Eclipse, Silent Waters, and Skyforger. These albums are retellings of stories in the Finnish epic, the Kalevala.

Last year I constructed an entire lecture around Amorphis's "Skyforger" in my second-year Old Testament class. The expressions on the faces of 20-year-old sophomores listening to Finnish metal in a university lecture hall was delicious.
