Default Laptop Advice (HP Pavilion)

Keep in mind I will be getting it for $650 through an employee purchase program at work.

HP Pavilion dv9831ca Entertainment Notebook PC

I'm gonna be honest I don't really need it but I have always wanted a laptop and I would get some good use out of it when I am travelling. However if its not a good deal or a decent computer then I will just hold off until a deal comes along.

A few friends have told me its a pretty smokin' deal at that price, but I am just looking for an outside opinion.

Thanks in advance!

If you're looking for something to travel with, I'd steer clear of a laptop like this with a 17" screen.

7.8 lbs!

That's very large

It isn't very portable, and I would say it's more a desktop replacement than a laptop.

This is a long trip laptop that you should be getting stopped at the border with so that the border guards can throw you in the clink for all the illiegal music that you will be putting onto it.

And the specs are good. It's got an actual video card and not one of the integrated jobbies that are most often found on lower cost laptops. 8400m is still a bottom of the barrel card but it'll do quake 3.

You are joking about this, right?

I would not be playing games on it anyways so the video card is not a big deal. As long as I could watch movies, surf CP and work on Word/Excel docs thats about fills my needs for a computer!

If I could replace my desktop that would be ideal too considering I have had it for 7-8 years and sometimes it just shuts off on its own.

Well, Bill C-61 is probably going to allow the shenanigans of the ACTA agreement and that put's a serious damper on what you bring over the border.
