Default Agent: Pelletier a big part of Flames future plans

An article in a french newspaper as translated by google.

JP heard about the Toffoli acqusition and raced to find out if he was part of the return.

Quote:
"When I saw that, I still made the leap," Pelletier acknowledged in a telephone interview with the Journal. I didn't think it was to arrive almost a month before the trade deadline. I wanted to know the return for Toffoli. I don't think I'm completely immune to a trade, especially when your team gets a big name.

"I don't have a transaction clause. I couldn't wait to see what the Flames were giving for Toffoli. »

Pelletier did not investigate whether CH had expressed interest in his services.

"I didn't ask my agent [Olivier Fortier], he replied. It doesn't concern me too much. I have no control over that. Whether I was in the discussions or not, I don't need to know. I know the Flames like me and have plans for me.

"I've never had any information from the Flames that it's possible for them to trade him," Fortier said. I do not know if he was part of the discussions, but I can imagine that the Canadian raised his name. Jakob is a very good hope. The Flames love him very much.

"I met with the Flames last Friday in Stockton to talk about Jakob's future. It is really part of the team's plans. He has a good chance of making the jump next year in Calgary. »

It's pretty obvious that he is a key piece of the puzzle.

Next year we are likely losing Mangiapane. Having Pelletier helps mitigate some of the loss a little.

Elite level IQ players always make the show and Pelletier thinks the game at an extremely high level.

Don't want this thread to go on too much of a tangent, but I don't see that as likely at all. Mangiapane is restricted.

I think what they meant was that if Tkachuck and johnny are extended then Mangiapane might be a logical piece to move, if Pelletier can step into his spot at a decent level of play in the middle six.

I think that's a stretch. Mangiapane is the real deal, a goal scorer in a league where scoring goals is hard. Pelletier is a different kind of player with simalar skills. Don't forget there is never a 100% chance that scoring well in the AHL automatically means scoring well in the NHL. Anything but.

I still think Zadarov's 3.6will not be back and Rudzicka is going to replace Monahan on the 3rd line next year. Sean's skating great, has better linemates and will be a more valuable commodity this summer I expect. Hope they keep Gudbranson however if those pieces are gone the Flames can sign everyone and theres still a place for Pelltier on the roster.

Yea if anyone is not coming back to make room for the re-signed guys it’ll be Zadorov, Monahan and/or Lucic.

I like them all to varying degrees but you need to prioritize.

Can Lucic retire after getting his bonus in the off-season? Offer him a player development position. He is only owed like 1MM for the season, he might bite. Would that save us the whole cap hit?

Trading Monahan and then losing Zadorov would open enough space to resign everyone I would think after that.

RE-SIGN
- commit oneself to play for a team for a further period.
"they both played for the club last season and have agreed to re-sign"

RESIGN
-voluntarily leave a job or other position

He could but he would have to pay it back.

I would love to see him make the jump next season into the NHL but nothing is guaranteed under Darryl Sutter as if he doesn't think he's 100% ready, he won't play. The reality is that the Flames may have to reduce the amount of money invested into the bottom six to accommodate raises to top players and this is where players like Pelletier fit in.

Don't forget about Matt Coronato over there.

While I like both players a lot Wolf has done nothing but win. Sergeev as swell as Kerins are tearing up their leagues. Wouldn’t say Coranato is out of it either.

I think it shows some good balance at the top of our prospect pool.

In response to the previous poster I just don’t see a huge gap.

Went to a Harvard game the other week. Will post on it later, but Coronato is a long way from the NHL from what I saw. Played 3rd line and on the PK. Didn’t really make an impression, and ECAC is a cut below AHL. He’s going to need time.

That doesn't change the fact he is one of the Flames's best prospects. Coronato must be doing something right: he's #4 in scoring on his team at nearly a point/GP in his rookie season, and is one of Harvard's youngest players. If he is doing that from the third line without much PP time, then that is really impressive.

I have waffled on how to handle the college player prospect issue.

If they’re exceptional like Johnny, and clearly deserve to be in the NHL before 4 years are up, that’s great. Even still, you get players like Fox who probably could have made that jump earlier but bet on themselves and decided against it.

The bigger issue is a valuable player like Coronato who still needs a few years of development. Especially with the prospect of a Harvard degree. If that were my son, I would 100% encourage him to finish 4 years and then pursue his NHL dreams. Pro hockey career is not a guarantee, and even if it happens, vast majority don’t make enough or last long enough to retire on their hockey income. Couple that with the probability that one of the other 31 teams probably has a better opportunity than the team that drafted you, and it simply doesn’t make sense for him to sign with the Flames after 3 years, and especially not after 4 years.

I’m not pretending to know what he will do, but I thoroughly understand the thinking of the college players who complete their degree and join another team. Especially when they are a good, but not top-flight prospect.
