Default Off to New York City in a week!

I am going there with a buddy for a week! Any suggestions on what I can't miss and must do?

The main question I have is that since I am graduating soon and have my options wide open, I really want to meet people there. I am a commerce major at the University of Calgary with a wide variety of extra-curriculars and good grades and I just want to sit down and have a chat with someone who works there and get some advice. I am not sure if this is possible but it would be really cool to set up a few coffee meetings with local residents over there (or people working downtown).

but seriously, I'm a nerd, so I'd be all about The Met.

Also, if you're leaving in a week, and there for a week, the Yankees have a home series against the Red Sox.

Grimaldi's Pizzeria

New Yorkers love to argue about the best pizza, with Di Fara's, John's and Lombardi's being among the primary contenders. We won't settle that score here, but if you have only 24 hours you can't go wrong with Grimaldi's, a coal-fired pizzeria under the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge. Not only will you get a memorable pie, you'll also get a memorable view of Manhattan from one of the oldest — and most picturesque — parts of Brooklyn. Not to mention a jukebox filled with classics by Frank Sinatra, who, legend has it, had Grimaldi's pies flown to him in Vegas.

Grimaldi's was a huge let down. Giant lineup for standard-fare pizza. Cash only too - boo!

Best tip about food I got from people in NYC - use Urban Spoon.

After we downloaded that, we hit home runs on food each meal

- take in something on broadway. In time square is a place called TKTS that you can get show seats cheaper on the day of. I paid to see Book of Morman, and it was awesome.
-sports, sports, sports. Baseball at Yankee stadium, football.
- go to Brooklyn and check out some of the bars. I recommend barcade or full circle
- have dinner in the village
- check out Central Park
- check out a bar called "please don't tell" (Google)

My favourite place is the Spotted Pig for a beer, late night stop and cocktails in the meatpacking district.

I can only give food advice. Momofuku is a favorite of mine, so going to noodle bar or better yet Ssam bar is a must for anyone who likes to eat.

Angel's Share is a great bar for low key drinks. Look it up.

Shake Shack is quite good, and I enjoyed lunch there.

Motorino was good pizza.

The is a cafeteria style BBQ place in Brooklyn that I missed and have major regrets. My wife and I stayed after close at Momofuku Ko and chatted up the chef and he fully endorsed it. I am super into BBQ and if you are I heard it is dynamite. EDIT: Fette Sau look it up.

Shake Shack! So good!

Also check out a couple of Mario Batali's restaurants - Eataly in the Flatiron District and OTTO next to Washington Square Park! OTTO is also close to New York University and there's many places to meet people (college chicks) in the bars, etc. around there...

See a Broadway show. I'm not a theatre guy and went because my wife insisted. I was blown away.

Watch Suits. I actually have a friend who's a lawyer out there. Pretty much works 7 am to 12 a.m. every day (including weekends). Pretty much like what you see in Suits, except my friend works in mergers and acquistions (which Harvey from Suits says is boring). But as a result, he owns a super nice apartment right in Manhattan...that he pretty much spends no time in. Want to live in Manhattan? Then ya do that heh.

See, I don't understand that lifestyle. Is money so important to you that you sacrifice your health to get it, and will then use that money to improve your health later on in life? To each their own, I guess.

Back on topic: OP, walk all over central park and hit up some jazz clubs at night! In NY, you won't be disappointed with this decision.

I don't get it either. But he seems to love that life. Takes a certain kind of person, that's for sure.
