First time I've gone current roster in these polls (or modern actually). I've been on the Riggin, Musil, McCrimmon line so far.
Can't ignore Giordano, though Sheehy was an important part of that Calgary turning the tide with Oilers in the 80s
Russell is a guy I'll always remember when the Flames first moved to Calgary. Big, hairy, mean. (slow)

Some decent players on that list. I always liked Albelin as well.
I had to go with Giordano though.

Man conflicted as hell. I wanna vote Dana, but the glory that is NinjaBean cannot be discounted. Gotta throw down for Gio on this one.

Gio should win but I had to go with Dana. Again, I just respect what he did. I do respect Gio a lot but I think Dana deserves a few votes.

Went with Giordano, but Tommy Albelin was a very serviceable player.

I think this is an amazing testament to Giordano's development as a great NHL player. Good job, Flames.

Giordano. I'll always have a soft spot for Albelin though.

Mr. Giordano for me. Seems crazy that there used to be fights on this board about who was going to be better, Gio or Ritchie Regehr. Then when Gio bolted to Russia because Sutter wouldn't give him a one way deal many on this board easily wrote him off. Now he is our captain. Really is a success story and testiment to Giordano's hard work and never give up attitude. He certainly didn't have an easy road to where he is now.
Sheehy would be second just because of the way he could get under Gretzky's skin EVERY FREAKING GAME. I mean he was relentless with the Great One, during play, between whistles, between games. Wayne lost his composure more than once because of Neils antics, it was awesome.
On the other hand I hated Dana Murzyn with a passion. The day we traded him to the Canucks of all teams for fan favorite Ronnie Stern was one of the best days ever. Kevan Guy also came over in that trade. That was a good day.
My Canuck buddy was devastated as he loved Ron Stern and the fact that he had saw Dana on the beach the year before and wouldn't stop laughing at the Flames defenseman telling me that Murzyn was fat and had bigger boobs than his girlfriend. Now he was a Canuck. I kept asking him to tell me the story about his boobs again. Good times indeed.

Very tough call.
I really like the progression in Giordano's game and I think he makes a great captain.
But, Murzyn's playoff performance tilted the balance ever so slightly in his favor. Perhaps in a few years, the choice will become much clearer.

I went Giordano on this one, despite his time with the Flames not being done yet. I just think he's brought more to the table than anyone else on that list, including being captain.
Albelin was an unheralded defender with decent skill and not much physicality, but was one of the better ones during some dark years of the young gunz.
Murzyn was a very dependable and physical defender, but never got a lot of praise. Loved his game.

Sheehy was effective in getting Gretzky off his game.

The first #5 that popped into my head was Steve Montador. Then I figured Dana Murzyn had him beat. Then I thought further and figured Neil Sheehy was more deserving because of his battles against the Oilers.
Can't believe I forgot about our current captain -- Giordano wins this hands down. I believe once all is said and done, he'll be revered by this City in a huge way, perhaps even encroaching into Iggy territory someday?

Dion, this was your quote from the 2008 thread; a number of good Sheehy stories in that one:

I voted Sheehy, amazing I was the only one.
I understand and expected the Gio votes, but never thought Sheehy zero votes in the first 152 votes and that it took 153 for him to get one.
Cheers to Gio for making his mark

Gio all the way. He is the perfect role model for what we are doing here, and just love the way he plays.
I had forgotten that Albelin was here for 6 (!) seasons.
Was Dana Murzyn hated while he was here? I always remember him as a key piece on the '89 team. Always a pain to play against. As much as I loved Ronnie Stern, I really think Vancouver got the better of that deal.
...Also, where is Chris Dahlquist?? guy was a solid Dman for us for a few years.

Has to be Gio given his captaincy and rise to olympic consideration.
I almost went with Neil Sheehy though - aside from Fleury, there are very few if any Flames players more hated by long term Oiler fans than Neil Sheehy. His legacy long outweighs his tenure as a Flame.
First and best player we had at getting under Wayne Gretzky's skin. Physical, not afraid of the rough and tumble play, but loved the scrums and was always there with a hand free to pop an oiler with a glove. Also could trash talk with the best of them.

Some players (like Russell #3 and #5) wore more than one number with the Flames. How can we tell which number they wore the most?
