Let's also not forget Brodeur was drafted with the Flames 1st round pick, which Calgary used to trade up in order to select Kidd

No, let’s forget that.

Fair. Then ~20 years later they skipped the consensus top goalie and went with Mason Macdonald (over demko)...
It's a crap shoot, yet one that some organizations have been fine at, but that the flames are dangerously pathetic at.

If it was just luck then we would have hit on something by now. We have legit never hit on a goalie prospect.

Helge Grans (D) is a player I would love to see slip down into the Flames range in the second round. I've seen him ranked as high as 28 and as low as 69. Either way he is 6.3 a right shot and apparent an excellent skater. His defensive numbers aren't great. Bonus point for getting coached by Andersson's dad.

Lmao, and I get chided for saying Ottawa would take Askarov 2 spots higher at 5.

Askarov may not even make it to 7. On 31 Thoughts, they were speculating that at 5th Overall Ottawa may be looking at Askarov, Quinn, or Sanderson.

Craig Anderson played over 600 games in the NHL...

How big would Stutzle/Byfield and Askarov be for a scorched earth rebuild? That'd be massive. Two major anchors at key positions in a proper foundation build. Yup. Let's behonest, the Sens have some great Defensemen already in their system, they need that center and need a rock solid goaltender in the coming years. They'd do well to take Askarov. If they don't then they'll get another great player but end of the day, there's something to be said about snagging big core pieces in different positions like they have a chance to.

We never signed Craig Anderson, so I'd say you can't consider it a "hit".

Trading away Giguère didn't help the cause either.

I'd be curious if this year's draft is going to be a little more of a toss-up after the first top 10 protects, after covid has presumably reduced teams' ability to scout players. I can't remember, was there even a combine this year? Are teams doing pre-draft interviews over zoom?

Most of the scouting has been youtube this year on top of Zoom interviews. This year I can definitely see a Topsy turvey 1st round. Crumple the list and chuck it out the window.

Other than Arizona’s private combine, no I don’t believe so.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Askarov go at #2. It's not common to see goalies drafted that early anymore, but if you can draft your franchise, cornerstone goalie-why not? I can't see him supplanting Lafreniere, but I could see the possibility (although very slight) of Askarov going ahead of Byfield and Stutzle.
