Salt Lake City looks (slightly) more eastern than Calgary or Edmonton, so that wouldn't make a ton of sense except that you would want to keep those two together.

Calgary to L.A. = 2,100 km
Calgary to Anaheim = 2,100 km
Calgary to Vegas = 1,650 km
Calgary to San Jose = 1,600 km
Calgary to Denver = 1,450 km
Calgary to Seattle = 700 km
Calgary to Vancouver = 670 km
Calgary to Edmonton = 280 km

Calgary to SLC = 1,150 km

Calgary to Nashville = 2,730 km
Calgary to Dallas = 2,470 km
Calgary to St. Louis = 2,339 km
Calgary to Chicago = 2,250 km
Calgary to St. Paul = 1,685 km
Calgary to Winnipeg = 1,200 km
Calgary to Edmonton = 280 km

The central division would make travel really sucky for the Flames and Oilers, and I can't imagine the other teams in the division would be excited about it.

Looks like the league would like Vegas, Utah and Colorado all in the same division to give Utah some rivalries.

Colorado - Phoenix was too big a gap and Vegas - Phoenix were different divisions.

Salt Lake and Denver are a touch closer together than with Phoenix.

I hate this. The Coyotes are a dumpster fire that the Flames have feasted on. A SLC based ownership group might actually put some money towards drafting, player development, having actual NHL players on their roster to get to cap floor, etc.. I was hoping Murelo and the league would keep this going indefinitely.

And as someone who is incredibly bitter about how greedy pro sports have become, the Coyotes have been one of my favourite punching bags. It has been genuinely hilarious to watch them play out of a college arena in order to chase gambling dollars and magically convert the 10th biggest US media market into hockey fans.

I did not know that. Totally reminds me of the Cox Convention Center in OKC which I have been to watch an AHL game so I can picture what you mean. And I’ve been to Mullett. You’re right, much nicer. I mean, take everything else out of it (like profitability or visiting team having to walk outside on their way to the ice and also take an elevator to shower) and it’s a very good, intimate place to watch an NHL game.

It's not about the players on the Coyotes, but players with NTCs on other teams who might not have Arizona on their no-trade lists, but might wish to put SLC on.

It shouldn't impact that many players, and would only be an issue between now and June 30 (when most players submit their NTC lists for the following year).

The complaints that a few NBAers have had about SLC, have had to do with the lack of "ethnic diversity" of Utah, or the complete lack of "Night Life". Well, this is from the last census: In Utah, 83.70% are white, 1.19% are Black or African American, 1.03% are American Indian and Alaska Native, 2.34% are Asian, 0.90% are Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander, 5.20% are some other race and 5.64% are multiracial.

The only effect, I could see, for the NHL, is that Utah would make all their "diversity" initiatives , a little less impactful. This is an ethic breakdown of NHL employees, compiled by ESPN: 83.6% of employees across the NHL and its teams are white, 4.17% Asian, 3.74% Black, 3.71% Hispanic/Latino and 0.5% Indigenous, while 2.48% of employees opted not to answer.

As far as "night Life", well, I can't say I've seen much improvement over the 38 years I've been here, but, at least, NHL players will get expense paid business trips to more exciting locales, the down side? Edmonton is still included!

Gotta love how the Atlantic division has to fly over the entire Metro division to get to two of its teams.

Metro teams: "I don't know why people complain about long travel and crossing timezones. Aren't all teams just a half hour drive away?"

That would be horrible.

Travel is already one of the hurdles the Flames have when trying to lure players. That division alignment would make it much worse. Also, for players where the climate in Calgary is a negative, they could at least look forward to spending time in California and Vegas once in a while. Plus, as a fan, I can't think of too many teams I care less about than the ones in that division. How do get excited about playing St. Louis, Nashville, Minnesota, and Winnipeg all the time? I am only lukewarm on Dallas and Chicago as well. If this is what is going to happen, then I hope the Coyotes stay in Arizona.

I like this suggestion better:

If the rumour is true, I think it is a kick in the gonads to the Flames in terms of the quality of competition over the coming years. The Central teams are almost all on the upswing, where as the Pacific (outside of ANA & SJ) are pretty much what they are or soon to decline. It will be harder to compete in the Central IMO.

Proposed division:
-Dallas - elite and holding
-Nashville - retooling and on the upswing
-St Louis - retooling and on the upswing
-Chicago - rebuilding and on the upswing
-Minnesota- retooling and on the upswing
-Winnipeg - middling & holding
-Edmonton = no good

Versus:
-Vancouver - middling & holding
-Seattle - middling & holding
-San Jose - rebuilding and on the upswing
-Anaheim - rebuilding and on the upswing
-LA - middling & on the decline
-AZ/SLC - rebuilding and on the upswing
-Vegas - elite & on the decline?
-Edmonton = still no good

I don't understand why they would consider shuffling the divisions with a move to SLC. It doesn't look like overall travel would change much between SLC and Phoenix.

Acceptable framework that may have verbal agreement or close to it. Yes.

You know what, let's do it. Let's collect those high picks playing in division with the Avs and the Stars.
If Flames and Oilers get realigned to the other Western Conference division, it'll be terrible for travels. However, the silver lining for the next several seasons will be an enormous potential for rebuilding - especially if there's the top 4 team plus Chicago to bring the Flames within reach of getting 1st overall draft positions on consecutive years! McKenna and Iginla2 - here we come! But that division is scary!

Yeah, it makes no sense to me.

And as much as I don't want to care about anything Oilers, having McDavid in the Pacific is probably better for business than having McDavid and Bedard both in the Central division.

McDavid will be in the Atlantic.

I took a roadtrip down to Moab/Bryce/Zion/Monument Valley last year. Utah is a beautiful place. Driving in Salt Lake though, that was as close to hell as I have experienced on the road. Think of the deerfoot in rush hour for what seems like 2 hours (that seemed like how long it took to get through it ) at a speed limit of 80 MPH. (there were people doing 95 for sure). White knuckle city!!!

Might as well put us in the eastern conference.

The NHL can never do anything right. With this pathetic playoff format, now divisions that don’t make sense.
