How can the league let a deal like this happen?
I feel bad for Sens fans. This is malpractice.

This was going to become a circus if Karlsson was with the Sens for one more day.
The media was already waiting for him at the Canadian Tire Center for Karlsson to report to training camp today.
From this point forward keeping him on the roster would have had the media asking Karlsson related questions everyday to Karlsson, management, coaches, other players, etc.

Sens don't even have their first this year the Avs do. What an absolute disaster of a franchise.

So be it. You don't just give him away for free.

Too bad they lose out on their own first this year but you can start a rebuild at any time with any core. If they miss out on Hughes, there's always the next one. Even if Hughes is the next McDavid (which he isn't), the past few years have shown that doesn't guarantee you a cup.
DeMelo and Norris are solid young players and the picks will help.

I actually agree.
The trade breaks down into the equivalent of two 1sts and two 2nds for a player that was not going to re-sign. It's likely common knowledge among GMs that Karlsson is refusing to sign extensions. He's likely to look for the best possible scenario for himself next off season.
So whatever team pays up for him, is paying for 1 year of services. It kind of makes sense for the Sharks to give up that much, as they are likely pushing to win now. I'm glad the Flames stayed far way though. An equivalent trade from us would have set the prospect pool back substantially.
If a team really wants to push for Karlsson, next year's off season is the time to do it. Although I'd rather see the Flames go after Stone.

They should have sent him home and told him to stay there until they get the best deal they can get. I can assure you this was not it.

If this is giving Karlsson away for free, then the Flames gave Iginla and Bouwmeester away for less than free.
We do know that Karlsson had absolutely no intention of re-signing in Ottawa, and Melnyk probably had no intention of spending the money in any case. It's hard to imagine that a deadline deal for Karlsson would have yielded any more than this trade does. A team looking to add at the deadline doesn't generally want to give up any roster players at all, for one thing.

This is a team just one season removed from the conference finals.
Ryan-Duchene-Stone
Boedker-Dzingel-Hossa
Pyatt-Tierney-Smith
Pajaarvi-Pageau-White
Chabot-Ceci
Borowiecki-Demelo
Harpur-Wideman
Andersson (37)
Hard to believe. Dorion astounds me.

I can't believe how lopsided this trade looks.
San Jose just got the equivalent of Toronto getting Tavares and didn't give up a single, significant piece out of their roster. Insanity.

I like it for the lulz. I also like how the Senators had to keep bobby ryan . And how the franchise has 4000 season ticket holders. Its so funny!!!!

Makes you wonder what the return would have been if they'd made the other team take Ryan too, like Melnyk had wanted.

If there is anything to be learned from this, it's this simple fact: Never trade quality for quantity. You will never get enough in return.
We as Flames fans have lived this several times over. My heart goes out to Sens fans.
