He was an expiring contract anyways, they weren't close to the cap, and are re-building.
Cap Space in this situation doesn't actually hold much value.

Thornton will just sign for the league minimum, he doesn't care.

Yup.
Probably a lot of fans wondering why their team couldn't do this.
I think it was a case of San Jose throwing a line in with their bid and patience paid off when OTT panicked about getting something done before camp.
Too bad Treliving didn't offer some spare parts and a 1st as well, just in case.

Depending on the team (how much future cap space they have) his contract demands could be difficult to swallow. He's going to be the next player to join the $10 million club and he comes with some baggage and injury issues.

When they're the best top 3 in the league, it might not be a bad way to go. Particularly when you don't have an elite #1C anymore (or any time soon based on the prospect pool). They might have to be back-heavy, which as Nashville has shown, isn't a bad way to do it. I suspect the Preds will be in a similar situation once they re-sign Josi.

Why would Ottawa gut the team before the season even starts for this terrible return?? You would think Karlsson would be worth at least this all season long.

Had he not made the Hamonic trade I'm sure Treliving would have been all over this. There's a point where giving up all those first and 2nd round picks would have really hindered this organization's ability to improve past what they are today.

that official tweet by the Sens is grim too. "Most important trade in rebuild" ... how are they going to sell any tickets? That fanbase must have enough of that gong-show by now. I can't wait to see what peanuts they are flipping Duchene for.

He might actually have won. Then Karlsson doesn't re-sign in Calgary, and the team is out yet another 1st-round pick and has trashed its depth for nothing.
‘Be careful what you ask for, because you might get it.’
This isn't a good deal for Ottawa, but if it's true that none of this is contingent on Karlsson re-signing with San Jose, it could blow up in the Sharks' face very badly.

With all that cap space the Sens could sign a big name UFA next off season. some one like Erik Karlsson.

I may be in the minority but I think this is a decent trade for Ottawa given the circumstances. Karlsson was going to go no matter what and teams kickstarting a rebuild usually lose the trades for the star players.
Too bad they lose out on their own first this year but you can start a rebuild at any time with any core. If they miss out on Hughes, there's always the next one. Even if Hughes is the next McDavid (which he isn't), the past few years have shown that doesn't guarantee you a cup.
DeMelo and Norris are solid young players and the picks will help.

My guess is they will **** this up too and throw a bunch of money and term at Duchene.
They will attempt to save face on that horrible trade and make him the face of the franchise.

I think this would be equivalent to the Flames trading:
Mark Jankowski
Brett Kulak
Rasmus Andersson
Morgan Klimchuk
2020 1st
2019 2nd
2 Conditional Picks

I wish SJ had been taken to the woodshed on this, but as a hockey fan am thrilled to have Karlsson in the division. An absolute joy to watch live. And beating the best willl make Calgary’s Cup run all the sweeter.

I eagerly look forward to seeing this explode in SJ's face.
