There isn't a trade to be made to wipe out the loss of Gaudreau nine days ago. But from the next morning on did they make the team better? Clearly yes.

No they’re interconnected. If the team was going to take a big step backwards, then I would’ve preferred an all futures trade. If the Gaudreau re-signed and you ended up swapping Tkachuk out for Huberdeau + Weager and futures, then sure the conversation can be had.

But for me, I just don’t see a path at this very moment that makes the Flames better than they were last season which is what they needed to do to contend against the likes of the Avs. So in my opinion, I think they took a big step backwards and should’ve traded Tkachuk for all futures, which this trade is not.
