This punjabi guy seems like he's very fortunate to get that loan. I don't know about UNI, but I have a lot of friends who went to an Ivy league and Stanford and yeah... they live a different life. (Its funny to see UC Berkeley students though - they are some of the cheapest guys I've ever met. I live in 3 Berkeley grads, and 2 of them are cheaper than the story of the guy I just described and they are mid-20's and 6 figure salary.)

Gross. At the same time or do you live in one a night? Do they ever live in you?

It is also the cultural norm here in Calgary to spend disgusting amounts on your car, and wear garbage clothes. Pay $300 for a pair of jeans, and people will make fun of you. However, they won't even sneeze at paying $1000 for mechanical work to their $50K truck.
Many places in the world outside Calgary have it the other way around. People walk/subway it around town and spend their car money on clothes. Just priority.
To me, if you get out of an expensive car on Friday night, and are wearing jogging pants, your priorities are screwed up, but again that is just my opinion.
|
For me its the opposite. If you're wearing $300 jeans and living in a 500 sqft apartment riding the bus everywhere your priorities are screwed. Especially in Calgary where you need a vehicle to get around. Who honestly cares about brand names? I think you'd be daft to spend hundreds or thousands more on clothes for a perceived superior name. At least the $50k truck has some utility to it, and will be around long after those nice clothes are out of style. I don't see people wearing $300 jeans doing anything but looking pretty. You'd probably cry if you spilled oil or paint on them. The argument they last longer is also laughable. If I spend $300 on 5 pairs of jeans I guarantee they'll be around longer than 1 pair of $300 jeans.

I was going to post about how I buy the $100 dress shoes and get by just fine earlier in the thread, but I figured it wasn't a big contribution. While in a meeting several hours later I looked down to see my big toe actually sticking out of my shoe. Guess I don't get by quite as well as I thought.

People who wear jeans and tshirts are cookie cutter? Where as you are extremely groundbreaking and unique in your suits, right?
I can only imagine what it's like living in your world, as the philosophizing, oh so important, "self-made" 24 year old man that you are.

Nothing wrong with $100 dress shoes. But I don't really get paying $300.
Work shoes though, I would easily pay $200. Especially with all the wear and tear.
Jeans are a totally different story. Never understand why anyone in their right mind would pay more than $100 for a pair of jeans.

I don't hink the gap is all that much though.
I would argue that wih cheap clothes, you need to replace them more often than more quality clothes.
All in all I'm not spending an extravagant amount on clothes.
I can tell you guys what I spend on clothes:
I have two pair of high quality Allen Edmonds shoes I alternate. I bought one for $400 and the other used for $88. These will basically last 20+ years.
My pants I have custom tailored from a company online. Indochio.com. $100 per pair, they are made in china, and are of decent material and quality. No the best, but better than off the rack.
Most of my shirts I generally purchase online as well. Blank-label.com. Also made in china, but custom tailored. $45-65 each.
I have two suits. One in charcoal which works well for a lot of occasions and one grey one for more casual occasions.
I also have one blazer which is extremly versatile and can be worn wih jeans on a Friday night.
These items certainly aren't super expensive, and I think one of the main things to notice is that they are tailored. Fit is everything. Fit makes you look like a million bucks.

lol okay I thought you were spending $2500/suit or something. You're not spending that much on clothing. It actually sounds really reasonable. I don't need tailored clothes in my job, but those seem like good prices if I did.

That's basically what I do or I save up for big ticket items, like I want a navy blazer customized. I'll probably end up paying around $1800 for a tailor to make me this item, but I've already budgeted the appropriate dough that I'll need to put up every month to get this blazer made within a year or so.
And what you said, these items last a long time.
Also, you can take good pieces of clothing and combine them with almost anything, making it a far more versatile piece than cheap disposable stuff.

Yes, it is, however it is more than that. I was making the analogy that military people in uniform look disciplined, sharp, tight, taken care of etc. When you present yourself in the same way in civilian life by dressing a certain way, you project the same image.

It's hard to know much about you when you keep contradicting yourself. In this thread it sounds like you're mister money bags buying fancy pants clothes left, right and centre.
In the hipster thread you had this to say about expensive clothes:

Actually, I really like wearing suits. I'd wear one everyday if I could. I think the materials are comfy, and I think it's a decent look for me. Unfortunately, it's also not very practical.

I'm going to be checking out those links, worth.....they better not suck.
One place I like getting relatively high quality dress shirts from is Charles Thyrwitt ( http://www.ctshirts.co.uk/). It was recommending to me by a high falootin fashion designer, and it's been a great find.
They have some fancy high-end stores in Mahattan and London, but they also offer their stock online. These shirts are much higher quality than what you get at Banana Republic, Club Monaco, etc....but at a good price. They almost always have some sort of sale on, so you can get good deals.
They have great french-cuff shirts, slim-fits (if you hate the ballooning effec of most dress-shirts), and even non-irons (which are great for the single man who doesn't have a in ironing robot, err I mean wife/gf).
